The best part is when after the first cut he goes "and now I have no way of knowing the order of the cards" as he picks them up and looks through them.

Its really nothing impressive, he hides the halves of the deck when he shuffles so that he can fake it, then does a quick check of the order (making sure the 4 ofs are in in the right places/pattern is right) after the cut, all the while fast talking to make it seem like hes just twitchy and for you to pass off these things as nervous ticks

I just looked that up in established Modern here and you know, I kinda figured the answer to my own question would involve Seismic Assault. I just didn't know how to play it well in any eternal format. Well played sir.

Ever think of playing 42 lands.deck with it as a mainboard/wishboard win con?

I used to do this with treasure hunt, it was amazing, draw half your deck into either a manabond/exploration/wurm harvest/loam, letting you god hand a turn 1 manabond into a turn 2 7-20 card drop

So the basic deck idea is to have a self mill combo, emrakul, bridge from below, narcomoeba, and a graveyard based sacrifice outlet.

The play is to mill yourself sac the narco for zombies and make an army of them, kinda like a dredge combo.

The thing I need help with is finding an efficient mill combo, ideal would be something involving 1 or 2 permanents I can get out before turn 3, but I am also toying with the idea of using a no/low land build and Mind Grind to mill myself once and make 8-16 2/2's to end the game with.

I dont expect this to be too competitive, but I do think it could have some surprise factor to it and allow it to become one of those decks like infect stompy, or 2 land belcher. A quick fragile combo that is easy to play and can sweep a tourney with lucky draws.

I just want to make sure I understand this right before I build a deck around it for casual.

if I have Cloudfin Raptor with no counters and cast a token generator such as fists of ironwood I end up with a 2/3 flying trample correct?

As I understand it both tokens trigger the cloudfin's ability, and from the way evolve is worded in the reminder text makes me think that it doesn't check a second time, just when the ability first triggers.

So with Goblin Rally and mana echoes out I would get 4 triggers of 3 mana each for a total of 12 correct?

  • posted a message on Mana echoes and tokens
I need clarification, say I have mana echoes out and I cast dragon fodder, do I get 2, 3 or 4 mana?

Also, what if I already have 2 goblins out and I do that, is it 4,7,8 mana?

Who really cares, if some one wants to waste their money like that, the only thing they are really hurting is themselves.

The fact that a BL is gone really means nothing, I have the feeling that many more BL's get destroyed every day just by normal wear and tear (excluding collectors of course, but if you are using the card, you are damaging it)

Basicly what this guy did was put money into the economy with no expectations of ever getting it back, he has helped the country, the people who already own BL's (reducing supply there by increasing demand and raising prices), and the sadists who love to watch people cry because they will never have the chance to troll on this scale.

In the end the only people this person is hurting is himself and people who are so sensitive that they cant let a person use their own money to reach their own goals.

Internet makes it easy to theorise about decks that have 16 jaces, 5 force of wills and 9 dark rituals which guarantee a turn -5 win. In reality not everyone has that, in reality not everyone plays the 'top deck', the best players make their own decks, playing the game is more important than the 'meta'

In reality about 50% of players playing in all lvls of competition from casual to PTQ (personal poll covering 2 cities in canada that I did at one point while considering quitting competitive magic) have 4 jaces 4 fows and about 5 sol rings each, the simple fact is, unless your playing the top decks, there's no reason to play anymore, and once you have played with the big dogs there's no chance of finding a stable group because you are probably one of the 50% that owns the power cards and your just looking for a small pond to be big fish in.

Whoa guys, luck = 5% is WAY WAY too low. I think it's approaching 50% if anything. 2 guys, same skill, same deck, luck will determine it 100% of the time, right? Changing it to 2 guys, same skill, diff decks still makes luck a huge determining factor. Ever heard the saying "Rather be lucky than good?"

If one player gets god-draw, the other gets manascrewed/multiple mulligans, the skill level doesn't come into the equation much. I think at the end of the day, the draws, i.e. luck is a lot more important Smile I'd bet that an average player with great draws vs a pro player with horrible draws will still win most of the time.

I was arguing more of a vacuum state, but in an actual game state, playing a deck where blue is focused on fixing draws or something like sensai's top/fetches is the only way to cut it down to acceptable lvls where you would actually see the skill factor of the game make a difference in matches

To quote what was said a few years ago by one pro losing in standard playing fairies "I lost cuz he saw bitter blossom"

  • posted a message on Deck building vs skillfull play

With a control, combo, toolbox, or midrange deck, both are equally important. You can't know 100% what "Optimal," actually is, so you have to judge it yourself. What seems relevant in the meta, etc. Combo and Midrange tend to favor deckbuilding over skill, but are still skill intensive. Control and Toolbox both reward careful tuning and selection of cards, but mainly rely on actual playskill.

Personal opinion time, and I doubt many people will agree with me, but as a control player I find deck building to be more important then play skill, based solely on the fact that you need to play the answers to your expected meta in your deck to even have a chance at letting your skill carry you to them.

IMHO I belive the break down is more like
60% deck building (meta call you can call a skill, but anyone with experience can learn this)
30% luck (it doesnt matter how good you use your removal if you see all 15 disruption spells and no threats, same way the other way, unless you get the right mix over the course of the game it doesnt matter)
10% skill (this is where the mind games and seeing 2 for 1's come into play, but your deck should be built around getting this to happen, ergo you could call it deck building skill, but really all it amounts to is reading cards and knowing rules)

EDIT: after rereading my post I decided to come up with another analogy proving how much luck there really is in the game. Basicly it sums up that the reason blue is the best colour is that because of its massive amounts of card filtering/drawing/deck stacking abilities it changes the luck factor in the game to the point where it almost doesn't exist.

For a break down with a blue deck, considering its using the strongest mechanics in the game (drawing filtering and stacking) I would say its more on the lines of

50% deck building (same reasons, but now with your card drawing and filtering you add in ability to make your opponent nervous even if you don't have the right answer)
45% skill (picking your draws right is the only way to cut the luck factor to the point where it doesn't matter anymore)
5% luck (screw and flood still happen, but basicly with any 1 preordain/ponder/ even something as simple as augry owl will negate this factor down farther)

Again to reiterate, I don't believe magic takes all that much skill to play anymore (especially with the recent revealing of "top players" being cheaters), it is a game at its core based on the deck you build, and the deck is what will win the game, not deciding if you should mana leak that creature now or doom blade it later (pro tip 90% of the time baring something like massive tempo gain, its better to use the removal and sand bag the counter)

  • posted a message on Why introducing planeswalker point is good for the long term
I am sorry, but I am a little confused here.

You guys are saying that the only thing that matters is this new rating in saying how "good" you are, well what about the PTQs, GPs, and starcity 5ks?

I dont see this system making a huge diffrence in the PT line up, except maybe forcing some of the big names to sit down and play in the PTQ's instead of floating in on their ratings alone.

Basicly my point is, when has rating ever really matterd, in a big tourney where you only ever meet the opposing player once or twice a year, then at that point it comes down to play style/draws as much as rateing (people in lower rated area's have trouble raising their rating more then players who live in higher rated areas due to the way ELO ratings work)

Now with the PWP you get players who have simply played in more matches, this helps with other disparitys such as mana screw (I know I have had months where I cant win more then 1 match before losing 3 to mana screw). With the old system you could basicly grind up your rating and then "quit" magic to preserve it so that you would still have your invite to what ever tourney you wanted. This new system prevents that by taking away that massive loss of points you would get if you were rated 1800 and you lost to a 1400.

    TL: DR

I dont see the bad points, I feel this system actualy does reward the better players at least as much if not more then the old system, by still providing qualifyers the best players still place, and the players who grind will be easy pickings for them at PT

    0:09:08 [Jurs] <Jurs> 1 phantasmal
0:09:10 [Pandarilla] <Pandarilla> you just dont understand the stack
0:09:20 [Pandarilla] <Pandarilla> and refuse to listen to a person that does
0:09:21 [Jurs] <Jurs> this is the simple pile...
0:09:27 [Pandarilla] <Pandarilla> there is no pile
0:09:29 [Pandarilla] <Pandarilla> this is the stack
0:09:36 [Pandarilla] <Pandarilla> thers 1 spell and a triggerd ability in it
0:09:38 [Jurs] <Jurs> no you are wronging....read rules and after play Grin
0:09:40 [Pandarilla] <Pandarilla> my ability went on last
    0:09:42 [<System>] <System> Player Lost

    tl;dr

Basicly I get sucked into a 10 minuite argument about the stack, he says my phantasm doesnt trigger till his spell resolves, I argue that his wound is counterd and I dont get a poison counter, in the end he tells me to learn the rules before playing.
