Wow... Really? I never thought that they did that. I didn't think mythic rares were counted as Rares... Or at least marketed as them. Sorry for giving the wrong information :/
Yup, practically every retailer I knew of was gouging on Elspeth vs Tezzeret when it came out, online and local. I have a feeling retailers will raise prices to $30 or more once IvsG is spoiled for the following reasons:
1. The value of a foil Niv is currently $20-$25. The foil AA Niv in this set would realistically be priced at $10-$15 as a single. Add in Jarad, who could end up being a Commander favorite or even a Standard staple (unlikely, but you never know), and the result is two cards that more or less make up the entire MSRP of the product, assuming Jarad is priced at $5-$8 (he could be priced higher, but not lower, at least not while the decks are hot).
2. The 10 additional rares, among which could be additional RTR previews and further AA possibilities. If just one of these is a modern/legacy favorite worth $5, then we've exceeded MSRP on the basis of the set's mythics and rares alone. It's conceivable that they could include several decent rares, tipping the scale further past MSRP.
Given the above, it's realistic to expect gouging the second those decklists come out.
It's actually twelve additional rares. You don't include Mythic Rares as Rares, kind of like how you don't count uncommons as commons. But yeah. Generally, the single cards themselves are worth more than the entire MSRP of the deck, it just depends on if you can actually sell them singularly or not. Just look at Elspeth. When her Duel Deck came out, she was around 35 bucks. That's crazy!
This is one of the more interesting threads on this forum, I'd have to say. I'm surprised no one has come up with a card that could be 100 percent believable. But te fakes are definitely getting better. I wish I knew how to make fakes that well; I'd have a deck of all fakes and play fake wars with a set I custom made. Draft a fake set... It would be kind of fun!
We will see guildmages, but they won't be the original guildmages due to the powercreep and the new mechanics for each guild. Although they might be similar, they won't be the same.
I have higher hope for this Duel Deck because the of the fact they specifically mentioned it was also aimed for highly engaged players. Venser vs Koth and some of the other duel decks never said this, and I hope that the decks contain some goodies, or at least playable cards. I'm not asking for Tier 1 Dredge, I'm asking for some Mortivore. Just decks that can still be competitive and still be fun at the same time.
The thing I don't understand is why people think that if these decks are even remotely powerful, which is unlikely, that it will cause some terrible shift in the card game. It won't. It's not like the cards in the decks become standard legal.
They technically can't be the super powerful decks you're talking about, because if they did, there would be multiple copies of each rare in the deck and blah blah blah. You know. Besides, this fuel deck is designed for both new and experienced players, so in theory they should be fun, competitive, yet balanced.
You mean it adds annoyance and reminds me why I long ago vowed to destroy my brother's Niv-Mizzet every time it hits the field even if it causes me to lose. Niv fans like how his flavor text is his name in equation form,here's my equation " Putrefy= Niv-Mizzet".
It's a good card, but it also helps keep and edge against the slightly faster Golgari deck. We don't need another repeat of dd: nicol vs ajani. Ajani would crush Nicol before he could even cast one of his bombs, and even of you did get it off, it wasn't very effective that far into game.
The Guildmages were always popular in Ravnica (at least where I played) and very thematically correct and on point if you ask me. What I would like to know is do you guys think we will be seeing them return as reprints in RTR? Or will we get new, updated guildmages, which would probably even be cooler than before!
I would actually believe Brainstorm might be reprinted in this. It's probably 100% on flavor with Niv Mizzet and the Izzet, and it's not like it's a super valuable card, yet it is still awesome, flavorful and works well with Red and Blue. Also, how sweet would it be with new artwork featuring Niv Mizzet?
I would definitely include Jarad, and I would love for G/B to come back. My first deck was the madness based G/B Insanity deck from Torment, which cemented G/B as my favorite 2 color combo.
I really love Black Green too! I like all of the colors, honestly, but I'd have to say black is my favorite, and BG plays so well together!
We have been given new information on the duel decks, so with this information I figure I can redesign the decklists fit to the description given on the mtg solicitation sheet. The news is:
There are 6 RTR preview cards total.
There are 12 Rares.
There are 12 cards with alternate art.
The decks will be designed for both new players and experienced players alike.
This information will help me revamp the decklists, which I will be doing later tonight.
I just want GB to be a thing again. Dredge was sweet, and I really want an aggro/midrange deck with graveyard shennanigans and recursion effects. Obviously Golgari will provide these things. Hopefully...

As for the Golgari deck, I just really want good synergy and graveyard recursion. Cards like Vigor Mortis and Zombify are great, but what I really love is a creature that can resurrect itself. Mortivore, Boneyard Wurm, and Splinterfright would also be great, along with Golgari Grave-Troll, which, if you ask me, would be awesome with new artwork. Depending on how far they're going to stretch it, I'm sure Life from the Loam would be greatly appreciated by us consumers, too, but it seems unlikely.
I'm just so excited, and so set up to be disappointed, I guess.
With a new G/B dual land (8 total after Ravnica), can anyone else see a nasty G/B aggro deck popping up? Blood Artist, Geralf's Messanger, Grave Crawler, Vampire Nighthawk, Strangleroot Geist, Rancor perhaps Disciple of Bolas and Jarad, plus other new Golgari goodies?
