Whew, good thing they didn't tell us what Dreg Mangler does! That would have sucked!

    I actually laughed out loud!

^ Over the post above, I think the Only reason that happened is because of those dredge grave self mill combo decks!

Even if standart will be about creature battles, this will be completely outclassed by silverheart.

Mechanic is cool, looking forward to see some cheaper creatures with it.

Or... We can play it with Wolfir Silverheart and make a chump pump deck! Smile

I dont know. The Plane chase preview had two effects, first was counters,2nd was saprolings for the combined power.
    Something like this

    Golgari Gravedigger
    BB
Scavenge 3B: Return target creature with converted Mana cost X or less from the graveyard to the battle field, where X is this creatures power
    2/2

At first I didn't understand what you were referring to, but then I understood and immediately grew excited, discovering that this mechanic may not be as narrow as we all had believed. I'm praying it's like the Ravnica Planechase 2012 Grand Ossuary; which woul make it way more interesting. Especially, of we get cards like:

    Gravy Ghoul 4BG
    Creature - Ugly Zombie
Gravy Ghouls power and toughness are equal to the number of creatures in all graveyards.
Scavenge 5BG Put X 1/1 saplings; equal to power.... You understand.
    */*

Even though it could work against you with scavenge, it would be very interesting to see asterics for variable p/t and various scavenging power.

Pls pls pls pls be like this

If anything, I think the abilities of those cards you guys are creating would read:

    Golgari Thing 3BG
    Creature - Plant Zombie
    Scavenge 4BG
Whenever you Scavenge Golgari Thing, you may draw 3 cards.
    5/5

I want a creature that reanimates itself from death whenever you scavenge another creature from your graveyard. Why must only one creature benefit from the morbid feast on a corpse? Perhaps something like Bloodghast or Vengevine that comes back whenever you scavenge. I think if they did something like that, I would be quite pleased with the ability.

"Git yer' fellers' together tonight, boys, dey'r scavengin' again!"

Where did you get information that leads you to believe that Scavenge effects will just be counters?

This is very, very true, and I can't believe I missed the mark on this. What if it doesn't do just +1/+1 counters? The card as posted in the RtR spoiler simply states:

    Deadbridge Goliath 2GG
    Creature - Insect
Scavenge 4GG (4GG, Exile this card from your graveyard: Put X +1/+1 counters on target creature, where X is this card's power. Scavenge only as a Sorcery.)
    5/5

I'm not saying that it is likely, but it's possible that the actual effect may very, but the actual ability Scavenge is just a cost with an exile effect that can do something, similar to flashback except with variable abilities, and tacked onto the body of a creature.

with the level of education in your country, I am not surprised

One; it is wrong to insult an entire country over a post about a Magic: the Gathering card. Two; please do not make the rest of us who are a little disappointed about the mechanic look stupid and arrogant by making irrational claims and mean comments.

Those of you complaining that Scavenge as a mechanic doesn't represent the circle of life because it exiles the card are missing the point.

In real life, we can't recycle anything that perfectly, except possibly water (Because we have a whole planetary cycle of evaporation/precipitation that does a fairly good job of purifying it). For the majority of higher life forms, fully recycling the dead body of something big takes a very, very long time. For all intents and purposes, when something dies its constituent parts mostly go right back down to the bottom of the food chain and take a long time to work their way back up.

Infinite resource recycling loops, while our ultimate goal, are very difficult to maintain (Consider the energy consumption of the planet earths water recycling loop... surface water absorbs the majority of solar radiation, and when you consider that 2/3 of the earths surface is covered in water... you get a lot of energy being moved around.) An infinite loop such as being suggested by scavenge, while slow enough to be possibly not broken, has little reason to send the scavenged creatures back into your library. Surely the game would be over by the time you get them back, if you are pumping your creatures up so much?

I think you are forgetting a key point about Magic: the Gathering.

    The Magic.

I understand how recycling works; I am majoring in biology and medicine. You make very good points, but I was just trying to explain how Magic could change the way this whole process works and make it happen at half or even a tenth of the speed of reality. What you are saying makes complete sense, but I just don't like the exiling portion of it. It doesn't feel very graveyard cycle to me, especially after having a mechanic like Dredge. Putting the creature on the bottom of the library instead of exiling it would have also made out for some very fun combinations with Dredge anyways, like I had already said, which also makes the two mechanics "tie together" more efficiently. It's just an opinion of mine. Exiling to me means "You'll never get any of this back because we just consumed all of its energy like a black hole and thrust it into the Blind Eternities."

Now, with all of my opinions of the mechanic as a whole aside, I think that Deadbridge Goliath is actually a solid card, at least for the Sealed event. Although we have seen cards that are essentially 5/5's for four mana before, or similar things that have variable effects, this card isn't too shabby. In a Sealed event, a 5/5 for four mana is a struggle to fight against, especially if it comes down on turn four. Depending on how thick the removal is within Ravnica, the strength of this card could vary. Also, depending on what the four other special cards received are for each guild, those could also effect the strength of this card for the Sealed event. But as everyone else has already said, it's strong. It gives you an initial threat, then it gives you a sneaky late game threat that can make even the chumpiest of chumps turn into the fattest fatty. It's strong for the Sealed event, as of right now.

Standard currently has a pretty decent variety of competitive decks and I believe that that variety will continue to broaden as the average power level of individual cards and mechanics diminishes. I think that’s a positive development for the game for many many reasons. I’m very happy to see a mechanic like this.

Really? You think we have a variety? If you're talking about all of the varieties of Delver, then I guess I can see your point. Other than that, we have... R/G/x Ramp/Pod?

Another question: Do we have a close up of what this card actually looks like?

The part I don't get here is why it exiles itself. Wouldn't it make a whole lot more sense as the Golgari mechanic if it shuffled itself back in to your library, mechanically echoing the whole "circle of life" thing going on?

Honestly, that's my biggest problem. I hate how Mtg decided to start exiling all of the cards they felt would be too strong of they say in your graveyard for too long. Temporal Mastery, Spelltwine, etc. That's not really my point though. I guess I can understand why those were exiled. But Scavenge...

Although I don't think the creatures with Scavenge should be able to stay in the yard and keep giving out free +1/+1 counters, it would have been much cooler -- are arguably much stronger -- if they shuffled back into your library or were put on the bottom of your library.

Hear me out. I'm not being unreasonable or making irrational claims. This would make the life and death cycle a bit more fluent then simply exiling them, which isn't a cycle at all, but instead just a way to can them from use. It would have been way cooler if you put the card on the bottom of your library instead! Think about how awesome that would have been with the old Dredge mechanic. They would have worked amazingly together! You could dredge you cards, scavenge the ones you want from the grave, recycle, then get them back quickly because of dredge! I wouldn't mind paying for a bit higher scavenge costs of they went to the bottom of your library instead.

Maybe I am being completely unreasonable, but that just makes more sense to me both flavor-wise and mechanic-wise. Sure, it would obviously be stronger, but they could always up the scavenge costs.

It's pointless to argue my point because the card has already been proven real, I just wanted to make a reasonable claim at my opinion to show that not everyone on here is just bashing the mechanic to bash it.

How can we speculate about a card whose name is the only thing we know?

It was just really for fun. I wanted to see what everyone else thought. With Scavenge released as the Golgari mechanic, we could make some fun predictions.

If I had to guess, I would say something like...

    Dreg Mangler 2BB
    Creature - Zombie Horror
Whenever you scavenge a creature card from your graveyard, you may return Dreg Mangler from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.
Why should the spoils of the graveyard go to just one servant?

I was browsing Magic's Homepage, and I happened to stumble across this little gem when reading this article:

    http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/1039

They mention an alternate edition of a card named Dreg Mangler that is from RTR and is included in the special holiday gift box. However, they don't mention what it does.

    Interesting.

Just by the name, I'm guessing it has to be a Golgari or a Rakdos creature.

    Let the speculation begin!

I don't understand why people use the logic "Dredge was op so of course Golgari wouldn't get a second op mechanic". Do people really think wizards holds individual guild biases like that? It doesn't matter which color/colors got what in the past or how powerful it was. They do not attempt to compensate for the past in the present.

I agree. Why would they nuke it with a worse second ability just because people abused their first ability? Why not make them all even?

And maybe it was just me, but I don't think people hated dredge because you could get your cards back. I think people didn't like it because of the stupid self mill decks that combined with combos.
