A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

Its just speculation at the moment. But if modern masters primary purpose is to make Moden more accessible to newer players, this would go a long way and make the set extremely popular. It also prevents them from hitting standard.

They are going to reprint some set of duals, at least I believe they will. Does anybody think there's another dual variant that is more likely to come back?

draftmagic.com is decent. They post drafts fairly regularly and sometimes put out videos for other formats. They also have a YouTube channel under Draftmagic. Check them out.

  • posted a message on What WERE the ICONIC Alpha/Beta cards?
I started playing when revised first came out. At that time, Antiquities could still be found. The Power 9 were already known about but were of course out of print. They were legendary cards that most of us rarely saw and never owned. I remember seeing some moxes for sale for $60 at a LGS near my school, which was rediculously expensive back then. That being said, when I think as the "iconic" cards from my earliest playing days, I think of the Shivan Dragon and Royal Assassin. Believe it or not, they were selling for $20 each. I remember when I finally obtained a playset of Assassins, it was glorious. My favorite deck had 4 Royal Assassins, Sengir Vampires, Sorceress Queens, and Nettling Imps. My freinds hated it so much lol. I had always wanted to get my hands on an Icy Manipulator to really break my deck but alas it was one of those "Legendary cards" I would never own.

I'm trying to find out if the same guys who always win the Sunday events have a history of winning the Saturday events as well, which is where they would first have access to the cards.

I'd prefer not to have to register at pre release as it would take some time and just be generally annoying. But, I'd also like a level playing field so I'm kinda torn. Our tourney's usually have decent tournout of 40+ players so these guys are always bringing home well over a box in free boosters, so there is an incentive for them to do this.

For the last couple of years the same few guys have been winnig the pre release tourneys. These guys are good players, but they always seem to pull the most rediculous pools and stomp over everybody. These guys play in multiple events, so they have access to cards for the Sunday events. For example, yesterday the two guys who always win just happened to pull amazing mythics and rares for the guild they chose. They always have amazing uncommons to curve out their deck as well. I realize this happens sometimes, but it is happening repeatedly to the same guys too frequently to be random in my opinion.

We used to register the pools, and the results were way more random. Good players would have decent records, but the winners usually varied.

I'm curious to know if its more common for a LGS to make players register their sealed pools at pre release events or not?

  • posted a message on Lying in sealed matches
knowing what's in someone's deck gives an advantage. It's a card game where traditional tactics such as bluffing can be used. I would never outright lie about cards in my deck but I'm not going to give you information either.

I had a situation where I was playing in a match where we were both undefeated. During the game my friend was sitting beside me talking outloud about what cards I had. While this was going on, I could see my opponent making a mental checklist. He admited to me after the match that he used that information against me to delay using some of his removal.

I've also been in drafts where everybody at my table was bragging about there decks and how lucky they were. Based on this I assumed I'd be getting destroyed. I ended up winning the draft, where most of my oponents had good cards but bad decks. There's a huge difference.

My issue is more with who has the right to release the information. A team of people have put years into preparing the set, card by card from beginning to end. IMHO, those who put the time and effort into making something should be the ones who determine how and when it is revealed to the public. I personally prefer the slow reveal as I find a complete and early one to be very anticlimactic. Competitive players having early access to the cards is pretty rediculous, but I don't think this was the case with the mojority of the high profile players even before the Godbook insident.

This just simply didn't happen. Didn't you have a simular post about opening multiple Jaces(3+) at pre release?

And you have another post about drafting 4 Tamiyo's in one draft...starting to see a patern lol.

  • posted a message on Am I the only one who feels like they wasted money on singles?
As a casual EDH player, I mainly buy singles.

-Buying packs, which includes boxes, are a waste of money. Cracking packs is a lot of fun, but you are much more likely to not get anything you wanted than to crack something you're going to add to your decks.

-Drafting and Sealed events are the only times I'll open an actual pack these days. This is the best way to still open packs but not feel like you wasted your cash.

-As a casual player, you don't really need those chase rares and Mythics in the first month that they were released. If you have to buy them, at least wait for the initial hype to cool down. The longer you wait, the more likely you will be paying a fraction of the pre realease price. Better yet, wait for the cards to rotate out of standard.

Lately what I've been doing is for new sets is I Set a hard budget of $50 for singles. I buy the commons and uncommons I need as well as the inexpensive rares (ie anything under $5). This usually leaves me enough room to buy one or two "expensive" rares that fit nicely into my EDH decks. I'll go back to place another order on a set if some of the higher priced card have dropped. I just recently picked up a Sorin, Lord of Innistrad for $10.

I remember back in the day of revised or 4th hearing from the LGS owner that him and his son opened a case full of these "god" boxes. Didn't see it but they had a giant box full of rares to back it up.

Soulbound is an extremely powerful ability in limited. There is so little removal in this format which makes it even better. At the pre release I attended the guys using green soulbonded creatures had a big advantage. I ended up switching to W/G after starting with W/R. I was using red due almost all my removal being it that color but I quickly realized how innefective it was against a green based deck. After switching to W/G, I absolutely destroyed all my opponents.

Wolfir Silverheart is such a blow out its not even funny. He usually provides 12 power for 5 mana.

I know he was hoping I forgot since it was his only out. The game has a lot of things happening and trying to remember a trigger that happened 8 turns earlier without some type of marker is pretty tough. I knew I should have remembered, which is why I didn't make a deal about it at the time. I did tell him that he should have some type of visual reminder as to who is bound to who, and he agreed.

Had something come up during pre-release that I was wondering how you guys would have responded to.

During the earlier rounds, everybody I played against and I were doing one of two things with the cretures with the souldbond ability. They were either marking them with dice to show they had been bonded or they were overlapping the creatures. The point being, there was a visual reminder that the creatures were paired.

In my fourth match of the day, my oponent wasn't doing either of these things. At the time, I didn't really notice. We ended up playing a failry long game where at some point he bonded a wingcrafter to a Gang of Devils. near the end of the game he attacked with the wingcrafter leaving the gang back to block. No big deal, except I was at 3 life and had, what I thought was leathal in the air about to swing. At this point the two cards are almost a foot apart and I ended up forgetting about the bond. Of course, I attacked and he blocked with the devils, which died, and screamed in rejoice as he pinged me for 3. Now, I know should have been aware of the bond, but I believe the player playing those cards is also partially responsible.

I ended up losing the game but not the match. What would you guys have done?

  • posted a message on People Adding Cards to Sealed Decks
This unfortunately will happen whenever there's prizes in a more relaxed atmosphere. The store I play at usually runs two pre releases and wouldn't you know it, people always seem to open "broken" pools on the Sunday. The obvious ones, are the guys who add Mythics and rares. The smart ones add commons and uncommons to make it far less obvious. Yesterday I played a guy who had a rediculous G/B soulbound deck, where his curve was perfect. He had 15 soulbound guys in his deck between those two colors. He had 3 or 4 more in his sideboard.

the biggest difference I've seen, and I think most people would agree, is the speed of this format. Aggressive decks are very common and quite powerful with the addition of the bloodlust ability and some very efficient creatures. Red in particular can be quite devastating with some of its commons being extremely powerful along with a large amount of potential removal and direct damage. I can't tell you how many times I've died to a Lava axe in this format.

What type of decks have you been running? And what kind of decks have been causing you problems?
