I can imagine Modern eventually being "expanded and rebranded" to Eternal, which would be something like Masques forward plus special set cards legal.
At that point, I think Frontier would be introduced to fill the Modern void.
That way they don't have to "kill" Modern, just make it look like they are making it bigger. There would be a mass upheaval in card values but peoples Modern collections would still be playable.
I am happy they did this, but I would be happier if they doubled down on double rotation and made Standard 5 blocks instead of 3.
This new approach makes spring blocks much less attractive to buy in to.
Rotating by block makes a lot of sense.
Making standard 3 blocks was too greedy. Make it 5 blocks and you have a standard which is only marginally larger than the previous standard format, the equivalent of 2.5 old blocks.
The multiple bannings were disheartening. I also started playing Highlander which had a much more diverse meta which was to my liking. I play control decks but I don't like a meta that is devoid of aggro. I like the additional considerations people will have to make for deckbuilding.
But this tweet does not preclude supporting an existing format which currently isn't sanctionable. (EDH/Pauper/Highlander)
It also wouldn't rule out something which would have a major impact on an existing format, such as expanding the Modern pool, or removing cards from the reserved list.
Remember that this is a rumour, you don't have to take his phrasing literally.
It could be that a format which already is played casually could become sanctioned.
Highlander? Canadian Highlander? Duel Commander? Pauper?
A singleton eternal format would be more accessible even with current card availability issues. This would allow them to avoid dealing directly with the reserved list for a few more years.
I love toolbox decks like this, so I sold everything on Magic Online and built it. For a long time, it wasn't working. I had signets in to help power out tezzeret.. I had chalice of the void in but it wasn't gelling with a deck that actually plays 2 drops.
At this stage I am more or less breaking even. Still making a lot of mistakes but it has rewarded learning the deck.
My biggest issue obviously is Stony Silence. Rest in Peace is annoying as well. I need to get a Grafdigger's Cage for the sideboard too. Should be awesome against abzan company.
It would be nice if this was a return of old core sets. Strictly reprints.
This would allow people to play cards they already have in standard more and would lend some stability to a format which now changes very regularly.

Any store which has struggling Standard numbers should seriously consider supporting the format.
In that context, consider this Chaos Reveller:
Pros
Already Red
Doesn't use up graveyard to cast, thus better in multiples.
Comes with an aggressive body.
Cons
Costs RR at least.
Only counts instants and sorceries
Discards hand
I am pretty sure this will see play in burn. The deck would look very different from the current Naya builds, probably with less creatures.

I have not been performing well with my current build. About half the time it is user error but I don't think this is the right build.
