Sep 2, 2015Talore posted a message on The Magic Street Journal: Glitter, Gimmicks, and Glamours - Wizards' Reprint ShenanigansPosted in: ArticlesQuote from halahel »Magic is not, and was never intended to be, a game for the budget-minded. Luckily, thanks to its excellent design, you can still play on a shoestring; but the complaint that all players "need" to have access to SDCC or Zendikar Expeditions promos -- when the normal, equally playable versions are available at a fraction of the cost -- is ridiculous. Wizards intentionally makes these products scarce to appeal to their most valuable customers: the people who order cases and have been sinking money into this game for 20 years.
- Pretty sure Magic was originally intended as something that you could play during the breaks of a D&D session, and thus budget-friendly. See also Arabian Nights almost having different card backs.
- I really don't think the author was making the argument that everyone should have SDCC promos and the like. She was just observing how many players feel regarding those sorts of promos.

A few years, at least. It might have been with either M10 or M11, but I wasn't able to find a citation.Quote from NinStarRune »Oh. :x When did they change that? -

M14, and thus Garruk, Caller of Beasts, is Standard-legal until Khans of Tarkir enters Standard. Core sets only rotate with Fall releases now.Quote from NinStarRune »Also...Garruk, Caller of Beasts isn't in Standard any more. Sorry. -

As for inspiration and examples of others who have gone this route, I know of two establishments in the Vancouver region which have similar themes - one leaning towards video games and one leaning towards traditional games. Try learning from those who have come before you as much as you can, if you're serious about this.
Best of luck!
The dwarf gathers the contents of the chest and places it in the far corner of the room. She notes the emptiness of her coinpurse due to its light weight as she handles it. Typical. A cut purse may be lost and later found, but curiously they always end up lighter than when you parted with them. Not that starting over again is unfamiliar with me - and Father always said to put money in thy purse.
"Lady Emeryn," Dieknuh asks, "would you mind covering my back as it were, to ensure that we've no Peeping Toms?" If/once she agrees, Dieknuh changes into her regular attire. After the all clear is given, she then prepares her spells.
Dieknuh is down 3hp from max.
Also I find mild amusement that the average wizard would be totally useless without their spellbook. Dieknuh is not an average wizard.
In Emeryn's presence, Dieknuh gives her a warm smile, bowing her head. "Forgiveness? Surely it is I who must apologise, Lady Emeryn. I acted carelessly and brought danger to the whole expedition. I am in debt to all of you." As Dieknuh prepares to leave the room, she reaches for Emeryn's shoulder, meaning to pull her aside for a moment. "Your empathy is much appreciated nonetheless." Grinning, she adds, "This is the second time you've saved now, Lady Emeryn."
The weary wizard then catches up with the rest of the party, ready to show the other cultists just how much she appreciated her accommodations.
