so, the player in question informed me was going to take a break from magic, *Shrugs* hopefully it will help. we plan to try the secret alliances format next week
my biggest issue is other players..who haven't check the rules and thus go all "WTF" about Partial Paris Mulligan rule and don't knwo that the RC has ruled that multiRelentles rats are okay
some over at MTGCommander put this together http://www.filedropper.com/cmdpointscheckoff which is what i was wanting sicne it has the point system that can be used for league events
Secret Alliances is a multiplayer format with secret teams. It works like this:
You start with an odd number of players. Lets say 5 in this case.
Take 1 Forest, 1 Green card, 1 Mountain, 1 Red card and 1 Artifact card, shuffle them and deal them out randomly FACE DOWN, one to each player.
(to add more players, just add more basic lands and corresponding non-land cards)
The players with Land cards flip them over, and play with their card revealed.
(The cards are never part of the battlefield and dont exist in the game - they just show who is teamed with who)
The other 3 players look at their card. The player with the Red card is teamed with the player with the Mountain, the player with the Green card is teamed with the player with the Forest. The player with the Artifact card is all on their own!
The players with non-land cards are not allowed to show them to anyone in the game, but are allowed so say who they are teamed with (but can equally bluff or lie through their teeth).
Everyone plays a normal free-for-all multiplayer game, with the exception of it your team mate is taken out then you lose too (non-land players reveal their card when they leave the game) - you might even be the one responsible for knocking your secret team mate out!
Its great fun!

Thanks Tim,i'll have to print that out before saturday..
Regarding suggestions [which I'm very thankful for, by the way!]
I think that what Hermes and I are going to do is just discuss all of this with our group this Saturday, talk to them about Multiplayer, and start doing some more Standard tournaments [maybe a few with just a 5 dollar entry fee and minimal prizes to earn some startup money so we can start doing drafts and stuff with REAL prize support.
.
well i am going up to albq (which is where our nearest gaming store is located) next week,so i think I will be able to pick up some stuff for prize support of anytype
3) get a few or all of the people who normally do multiplayer to try out 1v1. Some of my multiplayer decks have been able to win 1v1, but if the guy's playing tier 1 or 2 decks chances are the same won't apply here.
Based on what I've seen so far if the guy isn't up to compromise it seems like he'll have to go somewhere else to get that competitive urge out of him. Of course, I'm probably just biased towards multiplayer. it's what I've played almost all the times I play.
my thing is how do i encourge more 1v1, the only time we get serious about 1v1 is when we do tournments, which we haven't done in awhile due to lack of motivation with the loss of MPR along with some other things...I've been putting my attention towards getting prize support for the EDH league (which he quit from) since thats what the majority plays.
i just wish he would psot here,so he could explain it better than i ever can.
I tailor my decks to be multiplayer and I keep a few 1 vs 1 decks. I do have to agree that trying to play a 1 v1 deck in a multiplayer is near impossible unless you let yourself get ignored and wait for them to beat each other to death. I don't understand why people never bring more than just multiplayer decks with them though. They don't have any 1v1 at all?
We do have 1v1,but the majority of the players take part in a multiplayer game, and the majority decks the player in question faces in 1v1 are the ones he calls "derpy"
Another option for cheap limited is to have a player who is a little better funded than most of the group buy common and uncommon playsets from a set and make your own packs from that to draft, play seeled or whatever. I always buy common/uncommon playsets of new sets (I can typically preorder on eBay for around $30-35.) In the days before my cube, my playgroup would sometimes play sealed straight out of the common/uncommon boxes.
that would be for being betetr funded than the rest and this is something to look into
If limited really isn't in the card (ba-dum-ching!) you could try holding events with specific deck building requirements. When I was just starting out, my local store would occasionally hold events with an additional rule for deck building like highlander or banning all cards that cost more than 4 mana. It always helped force people to put down their usual decks and play something new and different. I can't promise the decks will be any less "derpy" but it might make for a decent change of pace every now and then.
bad jokes aside *I don't know how many have a big enough card pool to do something like that....
the player has also informed me that he likes team games which means 2HG,but i'm not sure how many others in the gorup would play it or even how to encourge it
So, last night during an online game with one of my local playes,we dicussed the fact that he finds some of the other player's decks "derpy" along with his dislike for the group's focus on multiplayer games.
Now I as the TO,can't really do anything about the "derpy" part, but I think i can do something about the multiplayer,i'm just not sure what.
Its not an issue of what format,he's willing to play anything from T2 style to EDH,but he perfers 1v1,while the majority of the group focuses on multiplayer type games.
So,what do you all think I can try to do to help this player enjoy the game more and atleast encourge more 1v1 games in the group?
Exactly, which part of the community? So i know whos knee caps to bust, lol
her legs go all the way up...i jsut loves me a red head....I'll be in my bunk

whats Secret Alliances and Assassins? I've never heard of those...

you can play it on a budget...unless in order to have fun playing the game, requires you have top level decks...:-/

mind paying for them?
we did the star thing awhile back, but i can't remeber if it worked well or not...
Limited is currently not a choice to to lack of funds, the probolem with 2HG is that i'm not sure I could get enough people to actually do it....
