    This is wrong.

"Fizzle" is slang for "countered by the game rules when trying to resolve". The ability resolves, it just ends up doing nothing. There is a difference.

Thanks much for the correction in terminology!

I'm not a rules expert by any means, but I'm pretty sure what happens is

    1. Cyclonic Rift bounces your Olivia and any other non-land permanents you control.
    2. Olivia's ability fizzles since you no longer control her upon the resolution of her ability.

You never gain control of the Thragtusk so your opponent can smack you in the head with it still. I'm basing this assumption by looking at the rulings on Olivia Voldaren on Gatherer.

It says "If you activate Olivia Voldaren's last ability, and before that ability resolves you lose control of Olivia Voldaren, the ability will resolve with no effect. You won't gain control of the targeted Vampire."

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone more rules knowing will correct me Smile

Worldfire Ban... no surprise. I despise cards that are that unfun.
    P. Titan... yeah he's busted. He's super good. I'm sad that I just bought one for my Riku deck, but no big deal. Every game he came out all focus was to kill him, reanimate him, steal him or exile him. He had to go. I will miss him.
Kokusho... I've missed you you black evil dragon of killing everyone goodness. Glad to have you back!

I guess I play a different way than a lot of players do. I really enjoy the chaotic drawn out games. I hate playing decks that run cards that blow up everyone's lands or decks that counter every spell possible. It surprises me that there are a lot of complaints about busted combos with cards I love to play. I just don't play them in some busted combo so I've never heard anyone in my play group moan and groan.

I run Palinchron in my Sedris the Traitor King deck and not because of some infinite mana combo, but just because he's fun to Unearth.

I have a Niv-Mizzet deck and the thought of running Curiosity in there just didn't even appeal to me because it's unfun.

I have a evil Mikey in my 3 zombie EDH decks and never wanted to pair it with Triskelion. He's a zombie in my deck. A good one, but he doesn't just come out and win the game.

Pulling an instant win combo out 1 or 2 times is fun, but after that, I just don't see how it's fun anymore. If people in your play group are running things like that, take a poop on their deck and tell them to stop being lame. Just my opinion.

You should look into Unburial Rites. It's about the only other card I can think of that returns something to the battlefield that can be played from your graveyard.

I'm pretty sure Dracomos would be fine with LD if it still existed in the game to stay relevant, but not to the point of being able to create an easy, dedicated LD deck that is hellbent on blowing up every last one of your lands so your hand gets blanked.

Indeed I have absolutely no problem with their being land destruction cards or even non-basic hosers, but under no circumstances should there be enough spells that allow you to simply shut down every single land drop that your opponent lays down.

Land destruction dedicated decks are by far the most annoying and non-interactive deck types that have ever existed. There is nothing more boring and frustrating than having your lands blown up on turn 3, 4 and 5 and sometimes as soon as turn 2 depending on the deck. I would rather play against a mono-blue deck with 24 hard counterspells in it countering every single spell I try to play because at least I got to untap my lands, draw my card, tap my lands and try to play something instead of just sitting there against the little butthole smirking because I have 1 or 2 lands down and 7 in my graveyard. Does it make me want to punch the blue player in the face sometimes? Yeah, but hey, at least I get to do something rather than just look at all the cool cards I could try and play but can't because I don't have any mana.

To the people crying about the lack of land destruction viable strategies, seriously, if you want to play with yourself, stay at home with your pants around your ankles and stay away from the rest of us who actually want to try and play our cards.

And this "Blue is so weak" debate happens every time a set is released. Counterspell is gone, deal with it. Yet if you look at some of the top decks even since counterspell was removed and see how many of them were blue or had blue in them. Don't give me that crap that Blue is weak because it doesn't have Counterspell. Countering everything your opponent plays is lame. Blowing up all your opponents lands so they can't do anything is lame. The game is not being dumbed down and it won't just switch to "my creature is bigger than yours" type strategies as being the only viable ones. Just looking through the M10 spoiler I see a ton of great utility cards that will help support many different types of strategies.

This game has survived far worse things and M10 is actually a pretty balanced set and looks like a blast to play limited with. I mean some of you haven't been around long enough to remember cracking packs of Homelands. If Homelands didn't kill Magic, nothing will.

Yeah, I know of an infinite mana combo, but it requires three cards to do it and two of them have to be the same thing. Try Cloud Key x2 set to creatures and Grinning Ingus. Play him for one red mana, pay 3 to return him to your hand, pay one red mana to replay him rinse and repeat.

I was looking over the 10th Edition spoiler and a couple cards sort of took me off guard. They've been gone and out of print for sometime and it just seemed almost "odd" to have them appear again for no current reason. Blue is getting Hurkyl's Recall, March of the Machines and red is getting Shatterstorm. It just seemed sort of out of place to have so many cards that seem to either hose or interact with having multiple artifacts. Does this give us a hint that maybe there is another artifact heavy set on the horizon soon? Hopefully not another Mirrodin where EVERYTHING was an artifact or interacted with artifacts. Just some food for thought.

Wheel of Fate is in the wrong spot. It's down near Whispers of the Muse (Blue) and Restore Balance should be moved from the Red cards to the White Cards. Other than that, it looks good.

  • posted a message on anyone else not remotely excited for TS?
I'm really excited about everything, but one thing. I like the throwback to old cards, the art work so far is amazing, the storyline seems really interesting, the old mechanics maybe with some new twists seems neat to me and just how solid of a lockdown on secrets WotC has this time around has just got my imagination wondering what the heck the really big secrets are because you know, there has to be some.

However, I'm not happy about the set size. I am a tournament player and a casual player meaning I play in sealed and draft tournaments and occasionally dabble in constructed tournaments. With that many cards in the set, it will be really difficult for me on my limited budget to even see a lot of the cards or get multiples. I usually end up with between 1-2 total boxes of a new set. There is no way that I could get enough things to even see a lot of the set on my limited budget. Does anyone remember 5th Edition and how difficult it was to get multiples of things from that set? It was over 400 cards as well and that's a nightmare for me to think about again. Of course, they have not revealed exactly how this whole purple or bonus card thing is going to work. Whether the cards are going to come in boosters with the regular TS stuff or if they are going to have like a subset that sells in little boosters much like a Chronicles 2 that you can choose to buy if you want. No one really knows and until then, I'm not going to say that this set is the end of Magic or that it's horrible. They upped the number of commons on this set and decreased the number of rares and uncommons and you can believe that there was a reason for it and maybe the purple cards have something to do with it. You also know that they are in a business to make money so they could give damn if it makes the sets easier to collect, that was NOT their intention or they would have done that a long time ago. They want to sell boosters and lots of them.

That, and minus the basic lands subtypes. Those give the land mana abilities.

This would be closer to what you're thinking, I'm thinking.
    (New Tundra)
    Land
If you control an island, New Tundra is a plains.
If you control a plains, New Tundra is an island.

Simple, elegant, unfetchable, and not better than intended.

I'm not going to say all the same reasons why the original Duals won't be reprinted. R&D still haven't been in any major bus accidents, so I'd say that they will be back about the same time as Mana Drain. However I like Annorax's idea with the New Tundra. I loved the lands from Torment and I still really feel that there could be something maybe like what Annorax proposed. However the way that his card is templated, you'd only need to control a single other Island or Plains to get the land become amazing. I do think that what will see is probably something closer to what someone else proposed with if you control a Swamp, the land would tap for red or blue. I don't remember the person who posted it. I see more along the lines of this though.

    (Not As Good Tropical Island)
    Land
As long as you control a Plains, Not As Good Tropical Island is a Forest and an Island.

This makes the land not as good as a dual since it won't tap for any mana of any color unless you control the Plains, it can't be fetched with land tutors, yet it would be a good mana fixer. Maybe my version sucks, but I don't see any kind of Painlands coming soon. I think that there will be something we've never seen before or something similar to what we've seen without being an identical reprint. Just my two cents. Dancing Banana

Some of you may or may not know me, but I was a member of the "site that shall not be named" for a long time. I mostly just read and rarely posted. However with this new site and a new place to call home, I may post more here. I'm really liking all the work that has been put in thus far and can tell that it is run by a bunch of folks who actually care about the community. To all the people who made the exodus, it's good to see you. The familiar faces make it not so scary a place to be at. Rancored_Elf, glad to see you here as well as all the other mods that jumped ship.

This is the introduction thread, so allow me to introduce/re-introduce myself here. I hope to have many good times ahead of us.

It's so nice to see so many familiar names from "that site which shall not be named". I have made the exodus as well, but am not nearly as well known though I've been around for a long time. I read mostly instead of post, but hey who knows, maybe that will change here. Nice to have you on board dbuel.
