Zanny77: How long have you been painting? Usually the most correct answer (and most boring) is practice. Blending colors is one of the most complicated stuff when altering, as i see it. Just keep at it, when you mess up, start over again til you nail it.
Try to look at those repetitions as pure practice instead of failures, it's hard to totally wreck a card-alter as most things that go wrong can be corrected. Work precise and with thin layers slowly building up transitions.
I have'nt been doing alters for a long time hence my answer is maybe not too accurate. Although, the thing i discovered when doing those miniature paintings is that patience is everything. Don't take your failures too hard; instead analyze what went wrong and give it another try, just like analyzing a gameloss in Magic
@Zanny: How much painting have you done? You might need to spend some time researching and learning some color theory. Maybe get one of those color wheels for reference (or just find one online). Theory won't be enough, however; you'll have to spend some time practicing blending paints based on the theory you learn to get a good command of blending (especially since different paints yield different results). Mostly it will come with spending time with your paints and seeing how they blend together.
Thanks for the input. I've been painting cards for about a year, but took a long haitus in the middle, so I haven't really done much. I talked with my girlfriend about it and she agrees with you guys that I really should practice blending, so I guess I'll try that. I try not to be so hard on myself about this but it's just the way I am. Oh well :/ I'll try not to give up so easy though.
So, I'm getting ready to just give up painting forever because I realized I really don't know how to blend colors well. I don't know if it's me, or how I'm doing it, but there's no way I can make realistic card alters without being able to (I'm trying to extend a Mountain art, and I am fuming over this fact). I really want to be able to do realistic things and not just have crappy looking art, so how should I go about trying to blend colors?
I just put down a primer layer of some sort of gray. It is quick and easy; you can prep a lot of cards in one sitting if you only have a small block of time and want to get at least something done.
I should really just do that. I usually put down a small layer of white underneath where I paint certain colors (my red and green always come out too dark and too transparent), but it may be easier to do just a broad paint under all of it
The Afterman: Descension - by Coheed & Cambria came out last month. If another good album comes out, that's cool, but it's amazing enough I don't have to worry till 2014
Not too good for me, but some of the cards really work for me. A lot of off color stuff though. Here's my current decklist. I went 3-1 last week and this week.
Honestly, I went through all the picks seeing if you could go Boros (based on your P1P1) and you would have been fine, although light on small creatures. (Unless you splash black). It's awful to put yourself in a corner saying "I won't do X," when that option could be the best for you (even though it wasn't neccessarily best here).
In all honesty, I would be more likely to buy this if Chimney Imp is in it
If you would gain life, instead lose twice that much life and draw a card.
1, Exile 2 creature cards from a graveyard: Gain 1 life.

Well, you put that I had two Corpse Blockades, Prophetic Prisms, and Boros Guildgates when I only have one of each, so that wouldn't work either.
