The opponent needs to have 1 weak creature among those 3+ creatures - If an opponent only has good creatures in play then this doesn't look so hot. Generally this seems like it would shine against mana dorks, as suggested, but will be subpar everywhere else. It's ok against aggro, but on the slow side.

You need to have a creature - If you don't control a dude worth keeping then this looks like a bad wrath.

Playable for sure, but this combination of conditions needed for it to be optimal make it very much a meta call. Like you said, the SB of a more controlling deck that wants to keep a dude in play is where it seems like it makes the most sense.

If your opponent has 3 (or more) big nasty monsters, killing all but one of them is still better than almost any other possible outcome, besides a total wrath effect, so I don't see how the card is actually bad in that situation.

If you don't have a creature, sure a wrath would be better, but a single target removal is worse, and letting all of your opponents creatures live is far worse, so this still isn't terrible.

Also, there is some cute synergy with cards like Suppression Bonds. "Oh, I think I'll let you keep your dude that has Suppression bonds on it, sacrifice the rest... and I'll keep my only creature, of course. Fair trade, no?"

If you play end Hostilities you kill every creature in play. If you play Tragic Arrogance you destroy all creatures except for 1 a piece, now you're likely tapped out and they respond by destroying your creature with Hero's Downfall or with something similar and go on the attack on their turn . What if you both only have one creature and it's the same creature you would gain no value playing Arrogance.

If you play tragic arrogance and your opponent kills your remaining big creature, you still killed all of his real threats and you additionally forced him to spend a removal card.

Conversely, if you played end hostilities instead, you wouldn't get to keep a big creature and your opponent would have the advantage of playing into an empty field while ALSO keeping his removal card in hand, ready to use. Much worse situation.

The only case where tragic arrogance is worse is when your opponent only has one creature, but in that case you simply don't cast it, possibly using single target removal instead, and you overwhelm him with your creatures.

I honestly can't tell if it's a flavor fail or a complete stroke of genius that this girl destroys creatures with different power and toughness because that makes them "imperfect" but her own power and toughness aren't equal...

I thought the point was that a non-elf with unequal power/toughness is imperfect, but that doesn't apply to elves... the power never works on an elf.

The title is a contradiction, but I think it fits.

Liliana of the Dark Realms is the key. Since shocklands include the land type, such as "swamp', her ability can fetch...
    Blood Crypt
    Overgrown Tomb
or other swamp/* shock-lands added in future sets.

As well, these dual lands still power Mutilate despite not being basic swamps.

Keyrunes and Chromatic Lantern also offer some nice color fixing, and if you are running 4 sweepers in the form of mutilate the keyrune "creatures" might be nice to have, since they won't get killed.

All in all, there are many options for mana fixing. The key, IMO, is to allow a few multicolored cards without destroying the swamp base required to make mutilate a usable sweeper.

Mana fixing aside, RtR adds some nice black control cards:

Underworld Connections seems to be a very nice card draw engine with minimal risk.

Desecration Demon not sure how this guy will do. In his favor, he is beefy for his cost and can probably stick around through a mutilate. However, he is a poor blocker and attacker when your opponent has tokens or recursive creatures available. Might work as a finisher.

Cremate fairly basic card, but I think it will help a lot with one of the threats to a black control build- a creature that just doesn't stay dead.

Abrupt Decay I like everything about this card. The only question is how reliably having G availible will be, but I think with the right mana base support it'll be playable without castrating mutilate too much.

Chandra, the Firebrand Single R makes her fairly easy to cast, and the potential to fork spells is a great ability given some of the strong black and multicolored sorcery available, her single damage ping should help against annoying little tokens.

Vraska the Unseen worth testing, for sure. On paper she sounds very strong and hard to deal with. The idea of playing her ultimate immediately after a mutilate board wipe makes me smile.

Demonic Rising used in some current monoblack control builds. Very easy to activate it with a keyrune creature.

Removal and utility cards to fill out the deck, so many options for removal in black so I won't bother to list them all, but personally I like to go for a variety mix, a few destroy effects, a few -x/-x effects, and a few sacrifice effects.

Discard is another nice thing. Mind Rot forked with Chandra is some sweet card advantage, but I'm not sure how strong it will be maindeck. Good old duress will fit in the board at the least, possible main-deck depending on how the meta shapes up.

I'd love to start testing and developing a full decklist, but I play almost exclusively MTGO lately, so playing with proxy RtR cards isn't an option.

Anyone else thinking something like this will work?

Power creep. Juzaam Djinn and Balduvian Horde used to be considered insane.

    And Erhnam Djinn

Color matters. A vanilla red 6/6 for 4 could see play didn't some red decks top out at Obsidian Fireheart? obviously it has an ability but it's only a 4/4. A green of the same would be harder to justify because of greens overall creature strength.

Anyone try curse of the pierced heart ? Gives some nice reach and inevitability, or is it just too slow? I was using it in a cheap (mostly common/uncommon) pre-rtr burn deck at it seemed to be a welcome card to draw most games, though of course it's lacking as a late game topdeck- unless you just need 1 more damage to win.

This is actually the best discard enchantment ever. It may see play in Standard after Innistrad rotates.

This is correct. It's also better than the rack, because with a discard deck your opponent is almost never going to have more than 1 card in hand during upkeep.

It makes me miss nyxathid, though.

Is somthing like this too powerful for this set?

UU Counter target spell unless its controler pays 2 mana. Sure its not mana leak but it does make it so that not every multicolored blue deck could run it. Could something like that be printed?

They printed a card stronger than that.

You just can't play it in mono blue.

edit: I see it's "non creature spell". I thought it was better than it is.

I think it'll be played. Instant speed is important. Maybe not a 4-of, but a few copies easily fit into a red-enough deck.

When your opponent chooses in a minimax game, it is always disadvantageous to you.

    False.

As long as the two choices are both good for you and bad for the oppoenent, it is not disadvantageous for you.

Based on what you write, blightning is a weak card because the oppoent can choose which cards are discarded.

  • posted a message on Older Booster Packs, how to Value them?
I recently came back to MTGO and noticed I still have a number of old M11, ZEN, and other booster packs that have rotated out of standard.

I'm trying to sell them, but I'm having trouble figuring out the fair going price. For example I found a bot willing to buy my M11 for 1 tix each, but seems low, is that really all they are worth? I noticed MTGO traders sells ZEN boosters for $4, but that seems unrealistically high.

The problem is just that while I can easily find price lists for fair card values, these lists don't include booster packs. I could just sell them blind but I'd hate to sell my packs for 1 tix each and later find out I was ripped off, you know.

    Any suggestions?

I've been away from MTG since Rise of the Eldrazi. Many of my cards are now illegal in type 2, and I am trying to get back into the game. Copying a deck outright just isn't my style, so instead I want to develop a collection of relatively cheap cards and do some deck building exercises with them, adding more valuable cards as needed.

Maybe this is too much to ask, but i'm trying to put together a list of all the commons & uncommon from SoM on through M13 that hold some value in constructed type 2. Maybe even add some of the cheap but very usable rares.

What cards are the lightning bolt and hymn to tourach of the new T2?

lol if you have a 5 drop in hand and no mystic, how are you going to survive until u get 5 lands? it's around t6-7 unless you have str8 5 land drops and some way to stop them

I don't understand. If you don't have 5 lands until turn 6 or 7, that means you have at least 6 other non-land cards to play. Presumably, you could use those cards to survive until your 5th land drop.

Also, if you have a sword in hand and no creatures, how are you going to survive at all? Sword doesn't do much without a creature. Both examples are silly fabricated examples, and but the cool thing is that batterskull still does something in the worst case scenario, because it is a living weapon.

Thrun is amazing but you can't theme an entire deck around him because he's legendary.

So you can't base a deck around Jace because he is a planeswalker?

If a card is strong enough, there is nothing preventing you from playing 4 copies, even if they can't be used at the same time.
