@Erostelu I don't see any reason why not! I mean, your avatar is David Tennant, which clearly indicates your high level of excellence.

@swishh Yeah, I am getting weary of fire/fighting. I actually like the other two starter trees, though.

Silea laughs as the Wingull pecks at the pokeball, then carefully sets it down in front of the pokemon and presses the release mechanism, hoping the bird will acquiesce to being caught without a struggle.

Hey folks, sorry I've not been around much either. I've been in what could charitably be described as an extremely introspective headspace, so...yeah.

I am excited for the new pokemon games, I have to confess. I've pre-ordered Pokemon Black already.

In other news, I did some fundraising for a wheelchair and WAS ABLE TO BUY ONE. Not the one I posted in the thread, but a pretty decent one for $250. It should be here on Monday or Tuesday, I'm super-excited.

I'm going to the Canadian Universities Queer Services Conference this week and am super-stoked. It's a long shot, but might anyone else be around in Toronto at that time?

One last thing for this disjointed post--if any of you ever want a more comprehensive idea of what's going on in my life, I recommend checking out my Tumblr, where I post a lot. If you have one, feel free to follow me on there too.

Tori Amos has definitely snuck close to rock territory at times, and her music is intensely piano-driven.

RIPLEY does not have piano, but they are extremely awesome nonetheless.

Those are the two that come most immediately to mind.

Silea nods to herself at the pokedex reading, which confirmed what she had thought.

    Alright...let's try something here...

Maintaining eye contact with the Wingull at all times, she carefully reached into her bag and grabbed a pokeball, then held it out for the bird pokemon to investigate.

Any of James Tiptree Jr's stories are phenomenal-- The Screwfly Solution, The Women Men Don't See, and The Girl Who Was Plugged In in particular. They're a little difficult to find, but so very worth it.

Also, if you're a sci-fi fan and you've never read Octavia Butler, you really need to change that.

    Central Caaaaanada.

By which I mean the ACTUAL centre of Canada, not Southern Ontario. My vowels are as flat as the Manitoba Prairies on which I was raised.

Well, chairs like that aren't just sports chairs--they're just generally for people who want to be the only one in control of their chair.

Which, because I am a bitter vengeful person, describes me to a T. Whenever I'm in a chair and someone else grabs me from behind I want to END THEM.

But yeah. The low back makes it hard for other people to push you without permission, and also removes weight, of course. The lack of armrests makes sense if you're planning to push yourself, since they would just get in the way. And the cant of the wheels provides much finer control, both in terms of steering and responsiveness.

Also it weighs less than eighteen pounds! And comes in a bunch of awesome colours.

ETA: This article has a lot of info about types of wheelchairs and what different components can do. It's very interesting.

@Cyan Hah, if only! Two problems there. One is that we don't have GameStop here in Canadaland--we do have EB Games, which IIRC is an affiliate, but I am not sure they are doing any such thing.

The other problem is that I'm poor. Like, I can make my welfare cheque stretch to one indulgence every month or so, but not really any more than that. Alas.

Just a regular DS. I'm going to look at GBA games too, but I'll probably just be keeping an eye out at used-game stores, etc, because otherwise I will be totally overwhelmed by choices.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone!

So, I just got a DS for my birthday. I've had one before, but not in quite a number of years, and I confess I haven't really kept up on releases for the system. So, what's good? I already have Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, which I am enjoying. And historically I like the Pokemon games, RPGs in general, platformers, and sometimes puzzle-y type stuff.

    Thoughts?

Seconding the recommendation for Birds of Prey, particularly Gail Simone's run. In fact, a lot of Simone's work is probably a safe bet--she did an excellent run on Wonder Woman, and she writes an ongoing series, Secret Six, where a fair proportion of the team (though not all of them) are women. There's also J.H. Williams' Batwoman, which just released issue #0 this month (although I'd recommend first reading her plotline from Detective Comics, which has been collected into a really gorgeous hardback anthology, Batwoman: Elegy.

Moving away from superheroes, if you haven't read Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis or Persepolis 2, you should really consider changing that. Alison Bechdel's Fun Home is, rightly so, considered a seminal work as far as graphic memoir goes. Gunnerkrigg Court and Riot Nrrd are both excellent webcomics centred around women.

    Hope some of that helps!

[OOC: BacK! I'm back! AT LAST]

Silea continues murmuring soothing nonsense as she pulls her pokedex and some bread out of her bag. She scatters some crumbs on the ground as she points the pokedex at the bird pokemon.

I was all set to be our first poster of 2011, but apparently I am not. Saddest day.

I hope everyone had a fun NYE (if you follow the Gregorian calendar)! I was at my friend Jessica's house with her and another friend. We had a nice dinner, cake, video games. It was low-key, but pretty dang awesome. I am planning for this year to be a good one. IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN.

On a basically unrelated note, is this the sexiest goddamn wheelchair in existence, or what? Unfortunately it costs like $2400 =(. The company has another one I like almost as much, but it is also out of my price range ($1700). Medical supplies! Expensive stuff!

Oh yikes, Nai. I'm sorry you're dealing with that.

I'm back from South Africa! Obviously. Though I won't really be around until...next week sometime? I am staying in Montreal over Christmas with a (super-cute) friend. We are sharind a bed :D. Shenanigans have already ensued.

Anyway, the point is I am somewhat...occupied over the next couple of days. See y'all later!
