    Finally something juicy for Nekusar!
    Fevered Visions
Basically it's a Howling Mine with almost immediate impact, that also deals some damage.
I'm not sure if it's really good enough, but it's certainly interesting.
In theory this looks good. My concern is that it could end up being *just* a howling mine. To be honest though, I'd play this over Howling Mine. The fact that it can, and will most likely, damage them makes it worth trying out. It has a nice, low cmc which is a bonus for those of us that want to keep a low curve. It also has the added bonus of not helping the opponents first like Howling Mine and its ilk. Another thing to consider is that if you are getting lots of draw effect on the table, this will probably deal them 2 damage and, hopefully, put them over 7 cards so that they have to discard (unless I've got the timing of things wrong). Essentially milling them at least 1 card. There is more to this card than the text written in the box. Since this is *minimum* 2 damage for the draw, I don't see this as a bad card. I'm curious to test it out to be honest.

S29, are you referring to something like this?

Better...but a bit too dark for the lighting of the scene. Drop that shadow layer down to about 35% opacity (play with the exact %) and throw just a slight bit of gaussian blur on it.

    Going for round 3....
Yup, that looks awesome. It was nice to the progression from the first, to the second and to the final.

Hi guys, im not active in the thread but I really admire some the work you guys have done. It looks really awesome.
Im looking for a super art for two cards but can't seem to find it.

Im looking for a super art of:
    Vedalken Shackles
    Venser, Shaper Servant

I would really appreciate it if any so you got these and could share them. Thanks Smile

    Guess I'll snag the shackles.
Beautiful piece. I only have one issue with it. The shadows of her chains need to be a solid color, not opaque chain links. If that makes any sense.

I modified this one to show some lightning through the die. And it is the die image size. I also included an image Similar to the first one.

FYI: since the larger die takes up more space, strangely, I couldn't show the lightning as much, which is why I went with a minor see-through effect. I keep forgetting to save the file, but it is rather easy to dupe so if you need some other changes I can accomodate.

You want the final image to be the size of the original die image, yes? Just making sure I'm getting it right.

    Hello!

Below are two playmatts that I've designed and had printed. The blue one was designed for a friend who really liked it and ordered one, I was impressed with how it came out and promptly spent 5-6 hours and £29 to have the pleasure of owning one for myself! Smile

I really dig the art style on these. The Chandra is especially cute. Good choice of quotes in the bubbles there.

Let's try to not discuss price/value for things, m'kay?

I consider the current posts to be right on the border of acceptable/unacceptable (solicitation). PM is probably the best (worst?) way to discuss this. I know this seems like a horrible way to do this, but currently we'd like to keep any posts that can move towards price/cost/solicitation as close to nil as possible.

  • posted a message on [[Official]] Non-Magic 3-D Alter Thread
This thread has been quiet for a bit. Time to liven it up a bit. I recently picked up a rather large commission. It is also a very tight commission. I've got 5 cards to make a 3d card. Being that I'm not a slouch on details I wanted to overdo what can be done with such a small number of cards. Keep in mind, I'm used to working with no less than 10 cards to cut and 20 layers. This commission is making me keep to 5 cards per 3d alter. This will be an image heavy post, btw. Maybe.

A couple of weeks ago, this comes in the mail:
There are 4 different arts. 65 of each of the cards. I can only use 5 cards per alter. I must also work on keeping it to 5 layers of thickness.

"So, where do I start?" This is always the first thing that comes to mind whenever I begin an alter. Since I have limited cardboard AND I need to make them as similar as possible from card to card, my first dilemma was at hand. This threw me back to a project I did a couple of years back, Vengevine. Since this was the most expensive card I'd worked up until that point, I didn't want to have to buy any more copies than I needed. So I made a print out of the card art (larger than normal) and cut the sheets as if I were working on the card. I made sure to mark the backs of the cut pieces with the "card" I pulled it from for the next step.

After all the pieces were organized together, I then Cut the remaining art from the art box. I then applied Packing tape to the back of the cards to where the sticky side faced the front of the art. I then layed out the pieces in the proper locations so that I can get a template of where my cuts need to be. Since I've limited cardstock to use, I need to make my cuts precise. I also need to make sure that I'm able to duplicate the cuts 13 times per card per layer. Having a cutting template is going to help tremendously.

Now my templates are cut. What's next? Time to cut into a card mimicing my template as much as possible.
After I cut this particular layer out, I realized I needed a guide line to know where the cuts are since it is rather hard to see. I came in after this shot was taken and used a fine tipped marker and traced the outlines.

From there, I followed all the templates cutting out the pieces as they were on each template. Since I was going for speed, I forgot to take some of the intermediate shots, so I'll just drop the images I have here to show progress.

LOTS OF TINY PIECES... also, I made a boo-boo. That piece on the upper right backed by tape.... Yeah that cut accidentally went further than I thought causing the piece to tear when I attempted to pop it out of the main card. Oops.

    Whistle while you work....

    Work in progress shot.

Detail shot of the work in progress. An issue i have with these cards is that they all have a moderate concave curve to them. It's evident in this image if you look at the right edge of the card. That was after me flattening it for a while. I've taken the stack of cards and run them against the curved edge of my table to flatten them out a bit more. These things hate moisture more than MTG foils

The finished product. I just applied the glue and it is drying. You can see the remnants of it in this picture. Mind you, the layering is thicker than the border. This was my learning card. I learned a lot from it. I even was able to trim off some of the unneeded parts and consolidate a few. There is minimal/zero shaping here, so the next ones will have some shaping to remove some of the concave curvature of the cut work.

Showing some of the details of the finished product

So currently this is where I am, image-wise. I've begun cutting each layer's pieces en masse. I forgot to take pictures of my progress last night, but I will do so tonight to show where I'm at in the whole process. I'm going to cut the layers from least complex to most complex as I'd like to get most of the work out of the way before getting to the harder to cut cards. Normally I work the other way around, but I'm trying to get as much done in as little time as possible and this seems to be the faster route.

    Thanks.

It's actually not my work; I'm looking to make a life counter like that. By dual life counter I actually meant a dual dial life counter, like the counter in the picture (which is not mine). I want each dial to display one number of the life total so you could go all the way from 0-99. I've only seen a tutorial about how to make one with a single dial (up to 20 or so) using a brass fastener.

    Thanks for the help!
aaah. Ok, that makes sense. I'm sleep deprived so pardon my ineptitude. In that build it seems that made 2 disks to size with the numbers scrawled on them. The central post might be a rivet of some sort maybe. I know a few artist who use metal brads or rivets to hold that central post. While I don't exactly know what you should use, I might be of some assistance in constructing that part. You could do a rod that hide INSIDE the lower half (it not being exposed) that holds the dials in place.

    Hi all,

I'm very new to doing 3D life counters. I have looked at some tutorials, but I haven't found any for the dual life counter. Can anyone help me with how to do these pins on the image link below? (It might be from this thread. Sorry for lack of credit for it).

    Thanks!
Welcome to the forums. Mind the goblins, they don't bite... too hard.

In any case, your work looks nice from what I can tell. As for the Dual Life counter thing, that's out of my realm of knowledge. Maybe one of the other helpful people here will be of better assistance. When you say "dual life counter", what specifically are you trying to accomplish? Many of us have just come up with ways of doing stuff and maybe we can help work through figuring out the problem at hand.

If you want to easily display an image of your work here this is how you want to do it:

Will get you what is below (keep in mind the link between the img tag has to be the direct link to your image):

I've seen a lot of great signature pictures on here for a while now, many of them were the blending of artworks from multiple cards. I was wondering if somebody could do a card-image blend for me, or maybe even explain how's it's done. Thank you in advance.
This belongs in the Random Requests and Critiques section. Only Avvy & Sig Shops belong in the main area. You can also ask in the Artwork Request Thread for some help. For now I'm moving this thread into the Random Requests and Critiques section. Also, Zombie Shakespeare puts it right on the nose, Gimp or Photoshop. There are also some online image editors, but I'm not familiar with them to recall what they are called.

Another work in progress shot. This time using the final 3d front and board design.
Wow. I like that. The landscaping on the bottom hides the lower half nicely. Really REALLY cool idea.

I thought about markinng the boxes like this, any thoughts?

    http://imgur.com/srLFPyj

The 12 boxes are all silver, so I went with a b/w theme.
Interesting. I have to say, the text going one way is a bit bothersome with the mana symbols being turned on their sides. Wouldn't it be better to have all the characters oriented the same way? With the boxes being silver, b/w is the way to go.
