I think you are right. I'd expect these reprints to be A LOT like the Xiahou Dun reprint.
I think you are right, but at the same time Loyal retainers potentially has a use in legacy (narrow as it may be) so it will probably be not quite as bad as the xiahou dun promo. Diaochan will be probably be the same as xiaodun though...
The secondary market are the only ones making money off of the low supply. Wizards would have made more money if they had made more arsenals
If we operate under the assumption that WotC had to jam this in while still printing everything else and just couldn't extend the print run then we can assume they just couldn't produce enough more, at least not in any meaningful numbers, to change the secondary market. But yes, by the numbers WotC would have been better off making a crap load of these and cashing in on the demand
I would sincerely like a foil deception for my EDH deck--I really love that art. Hopefully they won't be too expensive.
I'm a little surprised by the P3K cards, they seem a bit random.
The P3K cards are still useful in EDH and have some appeal, like I would like to have a loyal retainers for my ghave deck since I have a tendency to sac everything and anything I can to get ahead. So the eldrazi and ghave would be nice to reanimate with that guy.
I've never played with Diaochan but that would be because I'd never thought to...seems like a fun quirky card for multiplayer.
As I said in the Modern Masters thread - both products seem like - if careful - attempts to cash in on high secondary market prices. MSRPs way higher than the production values and artificially limited print runs, "justified" by kinda weak arguments. The one thing I see in this product that might have any kind of production cost is the 100-0 life counter - foils are not expensive to produce, since they print them all the time.
Well, foils aren't "expensive" to produce but the foiling process has to add probably 50% onto the cost to make the product...granted the cards are still dirt cheap to produce so 50% of dirt is 150% dirt...
Did you ever stop an think "Hey, maybe because it's 8 months out they don't want to start taking pre-orders because they don't know how much they will be allocated and don't want to have another Commander's Arsenal issue!"?
This is probably the best thing I've read all day...
I wish everyone would stop the rabid howling over every release announcement that comes out. It's getting old. We don't know anything about this product other than Tarmo is in it and that it is 24 packs a box for 6.99 per pack...that's it. We wont know if supply is an issue until closer to release, or if the MSRP is going to be a reasonable price point.
I am displeased by the idea of Command Tower from this set being no less expensive than its original printing, as I wish to have a foil version of it. Also, I have been wondering something for a long item now: why is Sliver Queen on the reserved list? Is it too powerful to ever be reprinted?
The reserve list isn't just about power, it was an agreement/promise from wotc to not reprint certain cards after the backlash from chronicles. Powerlevel has little to do with what went on the reserve list.
I initially was excited by today's announcement, but then I was disappointed by the actual content of the announcement, mostly because the oversized cards shall not automatically have normal-sized versions. That is very unfortunate, because that oversized Sliver Queen looked simply awesome in the new card frame, and with more concise wording.
Thus far, I am sorry to say that I am not impressed by this set, but only seven card out of the eighteen total that it contains have been revealed, thus far, so I still have hope that the remaining cards may be far more awesome.
How shall the prices of these new cards compare to the prices of their original printings? I would very much like to have a foil version of Command Tower, but I shall not purchase it if it is too expensive.
As far as a foil version of command tower, I would expect this one to sit right up there with the judge promo (just a guess), primarily because it is both A) alternate art, and B) extremely limited in it's quantity... As for the note you made about sliver queen, there is no way it would have been in the regular sized cards as it is reserve list material. There are only a couple cards on the current list that I have doubts about why they are in there but as with any of these releases they can't all be really stupidly good cards...just not possible.
survival of the fittest

they even admitted that they had to rush it out...

Retainers can be activated at instant speed, works really well with saccing eldrazi and the like...reanimate with the trigger on the stack

36 x 4 = 144, so you are approaching the MSRP at that point but still not above it.
GOC?
