    I'm 25. Busy having my quarter-year crisis. =p

What would a quarter life crisis consist of? Shaving? Getting a steady, well paying job? LOL. That made me laugh trying to figure out what a quarter life crisis is. I assume everything is okay though?

    Quote from Macius
Quarter life crisis is basically getting used to being an adult and finding your place in the world. Essentially, it happens as soon as you finish schooling and are expected to be an adult, but not have the means to be one at that point....

    If that makes sense.

It's a 'thing' that's been popping up recently for my generation (21-27 yo). Saw something floating around FB (or buzzfeed). Ofc any fresh college grad would have trouble finding a place in the adult world and I'm no exception.

:real talk: At this moment, I'm continuing to work at my current employer. My hiring had a requirement that I get my graduate degree. I got enough credits but my GPA was lower than requirement (2.72 out of 3.00 needed). So I'm not getting a degree and work is gonna figure out what to do with me in the next month or so. Best case, they fire and rehire me under a new position and 'throw me' at a new division/branch to start me off fresh. Worse case, I just lose my job. =p

Certainly fits into the category of the quarter-life crisis. Things were pretty smooth and all I really had to do was go to high school and college while swimming (my sport) and play Magic and video games. Swtiching lifestyles, moving away from friends, and working 8/9 hr days (while in my case also taking 1-3 graduate courses) was a bit overbearing. But it's not getting me down. If it did, I wouldn't be any better for it. Everything happens for a reason and time keeps moving on. I'm searching for alternative employment expecting the worst and keep my chin up. =) /real talk

In other news, the snow we got in the MidAtlantic was merely a dusting. But work called a 2-hr delay for all non-essential personnel. So I got up, had my bacon/eggs, warmed up the car, dusted it off and shoveled a path and got to work. Only to find that the delay had become a 4-hr delay and liberal leave was in effect.... >_> Should have stayed home and played Bioshock Infinite/Baten Kaitos, Paper Mario: TTYD or watched more AoT (attack on titan). BLARGG!

So ya. Stuffs happening. That's why I've loved Yomako stopping by. He/She makes me all fuzzy inside. Hug

Been cleaning up the room and making EDH decks or updating cards when I noticed that my 3 blue generals have different sleeves (as they should!). And they the shade corresponds to the color of the deck in a way. My Generals and their sleeve colors. I like to think I'm cool. Cool

    Hah, I can dream.

New alter, Revised Island. Really challenging, not completely happy with the top edge of the card, might paint over it in a brighter colour. The picture isn't great either, lots of reflection on the top bar.

Ya srs. I think we've gotten a god each day. And to not get the UB one today is..is...criminal!

@alter, looks awesome. Only complaint I would have is the 'box'/line thing above land and below island aren't altered over. And it irks me. But, that's me =p

Monkmiroku, it was a pleasure reading your primer. I enjoyed saying to myself "O! I wanna do that too!" a few times during my read.

I had built a Wrexial which had Fireshrieker to churn out the damage and boost his ability, but it faded away and I dismantled it. Just a few weeks ago though, my inner self yearned to go back to my milling routes, so I threw together a very janky mill deck with Circu at the helm. Playtested and it was SIGNIFICANTLY janky. =p Wasn't a big threat and I stay alive purely cuz i wasn't a threat durdly with Lich Lord of Unx. So my next plan was to do 'pure mill' by switching to Jeleva so I could exile the cards instead of having it bite me in the butt lately via recursion.

Then I saw your Wrexial primer pop up in the 'Last post made by.." section and thought I would give it a read. And I was not unsatisfied. Kekeke Love the style, deckbuild, and flavor of your deck. "Mill 1st, win with damage if you need to." "Don't run counters of infinite combo." "Make the game fun and interesting for everyone." Really resonated with me and again thank you for writing it up. =)

Taking your build as inspiration, what cards are essential for the deck? Or better yet, of the cards I'm lacking...

    Mesmeric Orb
    Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver
    Memory Jar
    Vampiric Tutor
    Demonic Tutor
    Insidious Dreams
    Reanimate
    Animate Dead
    Yawgmoth's Will
    Whip of Erebos
    Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni
    Doubling Cube
    Toxic Deluge
    Copy Artifact
    Bribery
    -------------------
    Cephalid Coliseum
    Creeping Tar Pit
    Darkslick Shores
    Hall of the Bandit Lord
    Nephalia Drownyard
    Underground River
    Underground Sea (Revised)
    Volrath's Stronghold

...which are the top prioirty? I'd imagine the orb, jar, Yawgwin, cube, and 1 of the tutors will be my top 5 priorities with a budget mana base to complement it. For the lands, I should make sure I have the drownyard, tar pit, and volraths' before anything else imo. Does that seem about right?

^^ Don't know why I forgot about this. I've played for a while and even I picked this up (though half the reason was because it came with a free promo card...). Quite for beginners of the game and a pleasure when you wanna break from actual paper magic.

    Quote from BTYcards
I think it's a really good idea to get a game like duels of the planeswalkers to learn the game. I think that my next paycheck I will look into buying it. I really do appreciate the feedback you guys are giving me. I have always been interested in MTG, and I can't wait until I can offer advice on the forum as well. While reading a thread on the forum, I did get a little worried though. If I understand this correctly, as MTG goes on, the older sets eventually become illegal in play, and from what I understand pretty much worthless. That being said, guys like to cycle their inventory regularly. The reason this unsettles me, is I just got into magic. Literally bought my first deckbuilders toolkit 3 or 4 days ago. Since then I have bought a lot of Theros and Dragon's Maze cards. I am worried that I am stocking up on already expiring cards, and I will not be able to play for too long until I need to stock up on Born Of The Gods cards. How long on average, would you guys say that a particular set of cards is playable/valuable?

I should go into a bit more detail. I explained the limited formats earlier - Sealed and Drafting. You open cards from boosters and you play with what you are given.

Now another type of format is constructed. You make your own deck and you play with that. Has to be at least 60 cards AND they must be from the appropriate sets. Each constructed format allows cards from a different period in magic (starting with the most recent stuff and going back a certain amount of years). The types are:

Standard - This focuses on the most recent sets. It includes the two most recent Magic 'blocks' (blocks consist of 3-4 sets/expansions) and Core Sets. So right now we are in Theroes Block. The Block before it is Return to Ravnica which consists of Return to Ravnica (RTR), Gatecrash, and Dragon's Maze. The Core Set (which came out between RTR and Theroes) is Magic2014. So currently, any cards in the RTR block, Theores block, or Magic2014 set are legal to play in Standard. Once Born of the Gods comes out (the 2nd set of the Theroes block), those cards will be legal to use in Standard as well. Same will be true in the spring when Journey to Nyx (the 3rd set of Theroes) comes out. And when Magic2015 this summer, for a brief period it will be legal with all the previous mentioned sets in addition to Magic2014 (b/c it can... >_>).

Once the next fall set (codename "Huey") is released (starting the next Magic 'block'), the RTR block and Magic2014 will 'rotate' out of Standard and no longer be legal. Then only cards from Theroes block, Magic 2015, and 'Huey' would be legal (in Fall 2014). A mouth full I know, but always remember to ask if you have a question if a card is legal or not. Never hurts to ask.

Modern - More cards are legal! With the expection of a few cards on the Modern ban list, any card printed in the 'modern' card frame is legal which includes anything from July 2003 and forward (started with 8th edition & Mirrodin block).

Legacy - With a handful of cards on a banned list, all other cards are legal! Use any card you want!

These are the 3 main formats of competitive Magic. Standard is everchanging and prices on cards can be expensive ($5-10 average, but can be up to $20-30) due to perceived power in certian cards and deck strategies.
Modern, with a more vast card pool, is a tougher format to get into due to pricier cards and a lot of card synergy (cards printed in sets more then 2 years apart never coexisted in the same standard time frame. With modern, certain interactions grew and things got pretty crazy! ^_^). Though once you get the cards, they don't rotate so that's a plus. Cards that are strong in Standard may not be that strong in Modern. So after it rotates out of Standard you may see its price drop. If it's strong in Modern (and even Legacy sometimes), it could stay pricey.
And legacy is a beast in and of itself (I don't play it, so I won't pretend I know the ins and outs. It's competitive for those that grew up with the cards at the beginning of Magic's inception).

O! And then's there's casual (sometimes called Kitchen table Magic). Play with what you want. =)

But for someone JUST starting out, as mentioned before, check out Duels of the Planeswalkers. Learn the rules and play a few games with that. Call your LGS (local game store) and ask whet the pre-release events are and what details you can get (how much $$? how long think it will take? Local food you can buy nearby?). See if you can attend an event in the coming weeks.

    And...well. That's up to you!

Yea. I have at least another 59. I typically stop collecting cards when I get 100 copies. Remand was among the first I started collecting though. I'm pretty sure I had close to 200 when I stopped. I may be wrong though, because I don't remember when I started collecting cards to 100 counts. We'll see! Tonight when the kids go to bed, I still have quite a few boxes to look through. I probably won't be done looking until tomorrow night though. When I'm finished, I'll take pics for everyone to see.

Thank you guys for the help. You guys really cleared things up for me. The only other two questions I think I have are

    - Is there a limit to the amount of creatures or lands you can have on the battlefield

    - I live in a tiny town. The nearest card shop is an hour away. Does anyone ever do any webcam battling that you guys know of? I would like to get my first duel under my belt, but I don't have anyone at all to play with lol.

No limit unless another card on the battlefield restricts it (e.g. Ward of Bones and Limited Resources).

Aaa. That's a bummer. A friend of mine introduced me to Magic, so we'd play together. After a while though, we would hunt out stores and places where they were having Pre-release tournaments, events where players can play with the latest cards (the earliest you can play with the newest stuff! ^_^). Back in the day, they used to be big events and we'd use to drive 1-2 hours to go to one, but recently alot of smaller stores have been brought into the fold and are hosting events too.

If you can't get a friend involved, either get one involved or call the store and ask what events they have. The new set, Born of the Gods is slated to come out....Feb 1st? Ask what times they are planning to play, the cost, and what not. Events can last 4-5 hours making an hour trip worth it. If not, the Magic Online forum is here. Deals with the digital side of Magic.

Playing on Skype is doable, but the camaraderie you get with friends and store players makes it so fun in person. See what your options are and best of luck!

    Quote from BTYcards
Hey y'all, I'm brand new to the game and I'm trying to learn some terminology. I have some random hopefully easy questions to answer for the experienced players out there.

    - What is limited / unlimited?

    - What is draft / sealed?

Limited is the name of a format in magic. You are 'limited' in the cards you can play with. Limited includes drafting and sealed. you open booster packs and build a deck from the cards you get.

Drafting is part of limited. Typically you sit at a table with 7 other people (8 total). You are each given 3 boosters. You start by opening 1 of your boosters, remove the token and land card and you pick 1 card from that booster. After that you pass the remaining cards to your right. You'll receive cards from the player to your left (1 card short b/c he choose his 1st card already) and you pick from that stack of cards. Repeat till all the cards have been chosen/drafted. Move onto your 2nd booster and repeat the process, but instead you past to your left! Then open your 3rd booster and past that pile to your right. Pick your cards wisely in hopes to build a deck of at least 40 cards. Lands are provided and typically you want to run 17-18 lands.

Sealed is the other half of limited. You go to a store and sign up to play. You'll receive 6 boosters in total (or in recent history 5 boosters and 1 'special' booster of your choice; it contains cards of 1 color/combination that makes building a deck easier). Just like with drafting, you make a deck of at least 40 cards from the cards you opened from your 6 boosters.

    - When you play a land card, are there cards your opponent can use to remove them?

    - Can you play more than one land card per turn?

    - What does scry (spry? skry?) mean?

    - What does splash mean?

    - What does shock mean?

Lands can be remove with either spells and abilities. One example is Stone Rain which flat out says 'destory target land'. Lands on the battlefield are also permanents and thus are also affected by cards that 'target permament' like Vindicate and Woodfall Primus.

You cannot play more than 1 land a turn unless a card in play specifically says otherwise. Like Rites of Flourishing or Oracle of Mul Daya. Certain cards and abilities can help you put more lands into play like Rampant Growth and Walking Atlas. These do not affect the "Play 1 land a turn" rule.

Scry, like on Magma Jet, is a keyword. If you have the a card with Scry 1, it means you look at the top card of your library and you can choose to keep that card on top or put it on the bottom. Scry 2 you'll look at the top 2 cards and you can keep both on top (in any order), 1 on top and 1 on bottom, or put both on the bottom if you don't like either of them.

No idea what splash means. =p

Shock is a coined term for 2 damage after the actual card Shock. It gives the name to the Shocklands like Temple Garden b/c you can choose to pay 2 life (or 'shock' yourself) to have it come into play untapped. Also interchangeably, friends will just say "I shock you" when play spells or abilities that deal 2 damage when those abilities aren't shock themselves.

Bolt is 3 damage and pretty much most cards just get shortened to what they do. I'll Doom Blade your guy. I'll Unsummon your dude and after you play a while the card names and abilities will stick.

    - I understand that you have to "tap" land cards in order to cast a spell, but say you cast a creature spell. Do you have to "re-tap" your land cards in order for that creature to attack?

You do not. Once you have cast your creature you don't have to tap to do anything else with it unless the card says so.[/quote]

    - I'm having trouble building a deck. Is it a good idea to run one color only, or is it better to have 2 or more colors in a deck?

All depends on what your game plan is. If you have alot of spells that require UU and BBB, putting them in a deck together might not be the best idea. If you are running multiple colors, be sure to include a way to 'fix your mana'. Include lands that tap for 2 colors like Dimir Guildgate or Drowned Catacomb. Some artifacts can also tap for mana as well (e.g. Darksteel Ingot or Dimir Cluestone). Some decks and get away with playing more colors because the players have access to really good cards that either tap for more than 1 color of mana or find the lands they need.

    - I was under the impression that a deck consisted of 60 cards. Watching pack openings online, I keep hearing of 40 card decks. Which is the actual minimum deck size?

Depends on the format you are playing. In Constructed as the name suggests, you bring a deck with you that you have built to play in the event. These decks should be at least 60 cards. Certain formats have restrictions and what cards you can play, so make sure to ask what sets of magic cards you can play with before signing up.

As mentioned earlier, 40 card decks are seen when you playing limited: sealed or draft.

    - I have come to learn that the odd looking cards, named "soldier," "spirit," etc.. are tokens. I understand that some cards "spawn" tokens on the battle field. How are they useful when they do not have an attack or defense? Do you have to have a token card in order to have a token? Or can you use a placeholder? Are tokens part of your deck size or part of a side deck?

Some cards do indeed make tokens like Captain of the Watch. When it enters the battlefield, you put 3 1/1 soldier tokens unto the battlefield as well. These tokens can be coins, die, or the token cards that come in booster packs. As long as you and your opponent know what the creatures are, then use whatever you want. The tokens act as creatures that can attack or block like the actual cards (and follow the same rules) except if someone Unsummons a token creature or destorys it, it ceases to exist. It is not returned to your hand. Just gone, poof! They are not part of your deck size, but feel free to bring the token cards and use those if you have cards that create tokens in your deck.

    - What are the cards, that are printed in "landscape" with two pictures of cards on them? for instance, I have one that reads "protect" and then the other card next to is reads "serve." What are these and how are they used?

Those cards are split cards! They are a special type of card in that you can cast either side of them. Like Crime // Punishment. You can cast either side by paying the mana cost in the top right corner of either half. With the card you mentioned (Protect // Serve), that card has a keyword ability, Fuse. You can cast either half of Protect/Serve like you could in the first example, but Fuse allows you to cast both halves of the card at once as long as you have mana to cast both halves. So you can pay 2W to cast Protect, 1U to cast serve, or 3WU to cast both.

Thank you guys for shedding some light on these questions.

Be damned if I didn't complete this post after I saw the first one go up! Gonna get my answers! =)
Anymore questions, feel free to ask. If you have any specific card questions, check out the Magic Rulings subforum here. Read the rules before you post and have fun gaming!

Nice. My 5color funstuff wasn't nearly that competitive. I have actually never seen Rector played and its price tag (and goodstuff-ness) probably keeps it away from most of my playgroups decks. Though in yours, with Claws of Gix and Omniscience, it gets the job done. Kekeke

Might build back up my 5color deck. Cromat is goofy if somehow I'm allowed to keep a mana doubler around, but it usually just durdles around or dies in the impending board wipe. I can feel the excitement you have for this deck oozing from the internet and you've peaked my interest in Horde of Notions. Love the haste and honestly, the first thing I noticed about the deck was that it had Spark Trooper in it. Glad that guy is getting some love. Kekeke If I remake my build I'll be sure to post it up.
