Every bit of 'traditional wisdom' about this game's value goes completely out the door if our economy finally just crashes. Absolutetly none of it will be worth anything to anyone if half the country is unemployed. This and a whole lot of stuff would just...not matter at all anymore. Guys like Rudy will take the biggest fall. I already feel silly and I probably have 1/100th their collections. Why? Because frankly, I can't possibly move it all even if I wanted to (and belive me, I really do). USPS is the least reliable it has ever been--awesome.
I can't think of a worse possible place to sink that money. I advise people financially for a living. Want my honest advice? If you don't need it to pay rent or buy groceries? Take that money and retire some debt with it (credit card is almost always the best kind--it's outrageously expensive over time) and then *do not run it back up again*. I would advise you in the strongest possible terms not to invest in MtG as a longterm 'investment shelter' of any kind anymore. My two cents. -

Looks to me like someone is buying them up and spiking it on purpose. This card will always have a very real amount of organic demand because of what it does. It's like Panharmonicon. It just combos with everything. That said, I can't really account for the most recent spike based on this demand, or based on some other new card that was recently revealed.
Not the easiest target in the world as it was from a fairly recent set. Quite a few of these floating around out there. I think they are banking on the first factor I mentioned above: ubiquitous application & demand (long term). I would expect it will come back down but probably stabilize higher than it was before. That's what usually happens.

void_nothing posted a message on Pimping: Alpha vs Masterpiece? At the end of the day, pimping your deck isn't/shouldn't be about them, it's about you. Which do you feel is cooler, the OG historical Alpha one or the unique art and frame of the Masterpiece one? They both have merit. I'd personally be more impressed with the Alpha one.Posted in: Magic General -

It *was* in fact a promo that was given away by the bushel.
I believe that for 8th Edition it was Elvish Champion. For 9th Edition it was definitely Serra Angel.

NPH is "really old", eh? I really don't know what to say to that, except to start calling people whippersnappers and telling everyone to get off my lawn.

The legality will change when the set releases.
Misthollow Griffin and Eternal Scourge are looking less and less goofy. It already combos with Food Chain in Legacy - if Food Chain gets reprinted into Modern, those will definitely spike.

Don't dismiss the uncommon walkers out of hand. Saheeli looks really good to me, Tibalt actually has a role to play, Wanderer seems like she could be great in EDH, Narset is the Fun Police, and Jiang Yanggu can definitely enable shenanigans. These are all meant to be niche role-playing walkers, not generic "jam me in a deck and go!" walkers. You just have to find the right deck.
Also, for purposes of this discussion, does Kytheon, Hero of Akros count? He's a great card that was printed at exactly the wrong time for Standard. If he'd been in RTR block, he would've been format-defining.

No artist credit yet, but I'd bet money on that being Howard Lyon's work. Howard has a background in religious illustration, so I'm not surprised that there's some significant influence.

Yes, RTR was when the print runs ramped up hard, so there's a lot more supply. That's really the heart of the matter.
Edit:
You say this shortly after one of the most ban-heavy Standards EVER rotated a few months ago. I don't think that R&D has been walking on eggshells worried about power level.

Yeah, TCGp has spiked as well. Possibly related to the new Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge, but it might just be a run on a popular artifact.

Unsigned ones are in the $400-$500 range. Chris Rush has passed away, but he wasn't terribly reclusive and Lightning Bolt was probably his most-signed card. That said, how many people would part with theirs? I'd probably ask closer to $750, but I can see a grand, especially if you're willing to wait a bit.
