Actually, I was more interested in ways how to make your hand size big (and stay big), not of mechanics that could trigger of this size, since these are too numerous.
I don't think they would make it backwards compatible, for very simple reason - foreign-language cards. There is no guarantee that the relevant words are always translated the same way on them.
No, if they go this way, they will have to invent completely new words for each Guild, words never used before. Or maybe the Guilds could get symbols instead? Displayed in upper left, where tombstone was in Odyssey block?
If you load the swf file in a swf editor, you'll see that the queries are sent to some address and retrieved from it. But when you open that file in web browser, all you see is "0 results"
If you want to get technical, the Orb is a Flash application that calls file http://www.wizards.com/magic/OrbData_Saviors.asp for results. That's about it. If you open that file, you just see "0 results"
BTW, if the speculation about */* is right (that it returns the total number of words in the set), can't we make a kind of word countdown?
1. Orb doesn't search flavor text.
2. Shinen is not "wisdom". Wisdom has apparently something to do with hand size (thus 97x "hand". Shinen is supposed to deal with barrier between the worlds weakening. Lotus Noir has talked about these as two separate mechanics.
Isn't it strange that most of the proposed mechanics (except mine and magicianofthought's, I think) concentrates on making the cards weaker, to support massive gameplay effects? I still think that epic (if it's indeed a mechanic) will be mechanic to make the cards strong. Just to remind, my take on epic is "This spell doesn't use stack," which goes well together with the notion of "epic" as something of major proportions, and practically unstoppable once it gets going.
The stack is one of the most basic advanced concepts in Magic. Spell that doesn't use it, it would be:
1. Uncounterable
2. It couldn't be reacted to in any way. Once you play it, it resolves. No returning cards to hand to save them from global destruction (for example). No damage prevention. No regeneration abilities can be played. I play it, it resolves. End of story.
Wouldn't you agree that a spell like this would indeed be one of "the most powerful cards"?
One thing is clear - if they make some restricted-use Instants and Sorceries, they WILL NOT be Legendary, simply because Legendary rule only effects permanents in play, and there was already ONE overhaul of it in the same block. Epic as supertype might work, though.
Maybe a spell with channel will have an option to pay its colorless mana part in life?

If we exclude some older mechanics that gave you bigger hand or made it matter (like buyback or amplify), what can we get?
My ideas:
A cycle of "supercantrips" that would let you draw two cards instead of just one (and would be expensive). This would increase your hand.
A spell that would draw some massive cards, but you would have to discard your hand at end of turn.
Some new twist on "unlimited hand size" mechanic like Spellbook and Library of Leng has. Perhaps a legend with this ability?
any ideas?

Nope, it never checks flavor text.
