nofingers-glad to see your post showing some of your other alters! They are sweet! I was hoping one was going to be my Tutor. Can't wait to see it! Hope the weather hasn't caused you any problems.
My thinking is that with the world economy struggling they probably cut back on their initial quantities of printed material. While this might irritate consumers who have to wait for more print runs to get product it is a very smart business move.
At least the uproar this time wasn't as bad as when Bush addressed the students. The Democrats actually had Congressional hearings about it. Talk about a huge waste of time and our (taxpayers) money! There was actually more money spent on the hearings to determine if the cost of the speech was too much. The Democrats were much more out of line then than the Republicans are now.
I got hooked on Magic several years ago. About 10 years ago I got a wild hair one day, hopped into my car, and drove 7 hours to Origins. I loved every minute of it! Most of my time was spent with artists and to this day there are artists who recognize me and ask about how my school year went when I see them at Origins or Gen Con. I have the original sketch for Mons Goblin Raiders framed in my living room as well as the original paintings for my two favorite Wheel of Time cards (Shaidar Haran and Aviendha), and a few other treasures I've bought from various artists. I told Mark Poole that one of my biggest regrets was not buying his original Power Sink painting when he offered it to me several years ago. I've never had the money to buy many of the drawings and paintings I've loved, but I try to buy something every year.
When I found this thread I was amazed! So many posters on here are wonderfully talented and I hope the altered card market booms to the point that those of you who do commissions can feel good about charging whatever you want and never have problems staying busy. I feel very fortunate to have been able to use the trading forum on here to get some cards altered by nofingers and anxiously await the card he is in the process of altering for me now. Good luck to all of you!
Honestly, one of my primary reasons for going to events like GenCon is for 50 cent/$1 rare boxes, especially since most of the dealers will discount it for you after X amount. The dealer hall this year pretty much sucked from that standpoint, though.
Boxes like that are great reservoirs of untapped EDH awesomeness. Or, if you prefer, Reject Rare Draft.
Good times.
A friend and I go for the same reason and we agree with you that this year's bargain boxes were the worst. Two years ago we got 2 Portal Wrath of Gods from Troll and Toad's dollar box. We called a guy over and showed him explaining that it was probably a mistake and we didn't mind if he couldn't sell them for a buck each. He went and checked with someone and came back and said he was told to sell them to us for being honest.
Here's a list I saw somewhere and saved. It's cheap to build (if you want it to be, if not you can add the more costly stuff) and there's lots of room for improvements/choices :
I saw this list somewhere as a budget blue deck. It shows that blue can be fun and not expensive. There is lots of room for improvements/replacements in this deck to fit someone's collection/budget.
When I buy sleeves with artwork I always go through and pull the ones with lines. Instead of throwing them away though I use these sleeves to put tokens in. The token cards MTG puts in packs now is one of the best things they've done for booster pack purchasers. The only bad thing about them is the ad on the back. Sleeving them eliminates this minor problem.
