published the article Welcome back! Well today we have a treat for you! This will be a quick write up of a fun EDH deck we’ve been running! Oloro, Ageless Ascetic was newly printed in the Commander 2013 Esper Eternal Bargain Pre-constructed Deck! The power level of Oloro is INSANE in EDH, both in slower metagames and fast ones. In slower metas, games last a ridiculous number of turns, which results in a ton of lifegain from Oloro. In fast games, the life gain can easily offset things like necropotence, mana crypt triggers, dark confidant, mana vault, etc. Either way, Oloro’s ability is a nice static ability if you need an esper general that you do not want to build around.Posted in: Oloro, Ageless Ascetic - Pillowfort EDH Deck
You might be wondering if there’s a typo in the title (or maybe you didn’t notice it at all) but yes, this is a write up for a UW Oloro deck, NOT esper colors. This deck essentially started as a UW pillowfort deck with Isperia, Supreme Judge at the helm. Her rattlesnake card draw ability kept people from attacking in at times, however, when creatures starting packing more power (mid to late game), people would simply give me a card and hit me for 8 damage. The commander spot cycled through many options: first Grand Arbiter Augustin IV (but that drew too much attention and hate), then Medomai the Ageless (cute ability, never reliable), and also the original Isperia, the Unscrutable (just not helpful for the deck).
Anywho, eventually Oloro was printed and he jumped straight to the top of the list! In a pillowfort deck like this, 2 life a turn can be a huge boost since you are vying for the long game and the combo win. This deck, at it’s heart, is a UW control deck that uses heavy politics, counters, and tax effects to stay alive in order to eventually combo finish the table. The black cards available to us in EDH would make this deck THAT much stronger but it is far more fun to play simply UW (and we play this game for fun no?) The decklist can be found below and we will go through and explain some of the card choices and combo interactions for your benefit!
This deck is for you if:
• You like long games, answering threats and biding time
• You enjoy tight play and threat assessment (very important!)
• You can constantly (and quickly) reassess the board state
• Your playgroup allows infinite combos and lockouts
• Your good with words and politics
This deck is NOT for you if:
• You enjoy quickly combo-ing out and ending games
• You like being very proactive and going after opponents
• You cannot bluff counters and answers
Without further ado, here is the decklist:
Now as you peruse over the decklist, I’m sure you notice your usual suspects in ANY UW list such as mana drain and cryptic command and sun titan. Well this deck has a decent number of counters as well as a huge enchantment sub theme (since more pillow forts cards are enchantments). Here are your typical win cons:
1. Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
2. Luminarch Ascension
3. Rest in Peace + Helm of Obedience
4. Enchanted Evening + Opalescence
5. Enchanted Evening + Cleansing Meditation
6. Enchanted Evening + [CARD]Aura Thief
7. Mind Over Matter + Temple Bell
As you can see, there are quite a few win cons built in. The best part? Most of them are decent on their own and fit in quite well. The key is to play the game until you naturally come upon one of the combo pieces then you quickly tutor for the other and wait until there is an opening to take the win (opponents tapped out). The only card in the list to be wary of is Rest in Peace since this deck does depend on Elixir of Immortality and the eldrazi trigger to recycle the deck and keep playing when resources (i.e. counters or removal) run light in the rest of the deck.
Playing the Deck:BE PATIENT. Patience is your ultimate strength with this control deck. Some players believe this deck is not meant for newer players but I LOVE letting new EDH players pilot this thing. The main reason being is that it teaches you very quickly how to use your ALL of your resources aka: your life total, cards in hand, lands, and your opponents cards via politics.
It’s very difficult to tell you how to play a certain deck but with this thing, MAKE SURE TO HIT ALL LAND DROPS UNTIL TURN 10! This is crucial. You’ll need lands to make this deck work. If this means you have to Blue Suns’ Zenith for only 1 or 2, you do it. Once you get to around 6 mana, start dropping pillowfort effects (ex. Ghostly Prison) and holding a counterspell (only counter a spell that will for sure hurt you and your development). Essentially once you have the lands in play, just be patient and the win will come to you. This deck can be tweaked to beat ANY pods you will likely face but you’ll need to earn the wins. Sure sometimes the deck will just combo for you but it usually won’t so play smart.
Tuning the Deck:As with any decklist posted on the internet, YMMV (Your meta may vary). This deck is tuned for the usual decks I see at the shops in Portland, OR area. If your meta is chock full of recursion and whatnot, you may need to consider Tormod’s Crypt, Scrabbling Claws, Phyrexian Furnace[/B], etc. If your meta is full of enter the battlefield effects, consider cutting the Sun Titan and Phrexian Metamorph for Torpor Orb and Humility. You may also decide to change up some of the wincons! Typical favorites in Oloro or life gain decks include Test of Endurance and Felidar Sovereign but I felt those don’t do much on their own so it wasn’t worth it. In the end, it’s a control deck. Make it your own!
Most importantly, have fun. EDH is a social format so have fun playing this game that we all love. Post your comments, critiques, questions, and changes below! Enjoy! -

published the article I decided to play my mono green WR deck again at FNM this past week. I saw a lot of aggro so it was a little rough but I went 3-1-1 finishing 3rd. Overall my record was 6-4. The decklist looked like:Posted in: MonoG Ramp FNM @ Matt's Cavalcade 11/4/11
DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards Creatures: (19)
3 Viridian Emissary
1 Birds of Paradise
1 Thrun, the Last Troll

4 Rampant Growth
4 Beast Within

3 Garruk, Primal Hunter
1 Sword of Feast and FamineLands: (25)
3 Inkmoth Nexus
2 Kessig, Wolf Run
2 Mountain
18 Forest
Round 1: Steve Northsop White Weenie (1-0)
Game 1: This deck is played by one of the guys that works at the shop. He made a quick random white weenie deck and he beat me down pretty fast. I stuck a wurmcoil and it got o-ringed. I ended up trading inkmoths to hit his griffin riders down. Eventually stuck a wurmcoil and kessiged to put myself out of kill range and won.
SB: -1 sofaf, -1 thrun, -2 beast within. +2 sowap, +2 tree
Game 2: He got the early beats and I stabilized. Long game since I couldn’t find a kessig. Just straight beatdown and trades. He kept O-ringing my wurmcoils. Eventually dropped me down to 7 and I linked up to 18. Time was called and he was unable to beat me down.
Round 2: Justin Whitton White Aggro (AD) (2-1)
Game 1: He played doomed traveler, memnite, and then a turn 2 champion. Turn 3 inquisitor. Turn 4 he tried to throw an angelic destiny on the inquisitor. Thankfully I saw it coming so I beast within’d in response to get a nice 2 for 1. Took the game afterwards with ease.
SB: -1 sofaf, -1 thrun, -2 Garruk, +2 sowap, +2 naturalize
Game 2: He curved out and I had no answer for his destiny’d crusader so he quickly took the game.
Game 3: I drew a decent hand and he couldn’t find an angelic destiny to save his life. Wurmcoil won me this game.
Round 3: Colin Welch Naya WRR (2-1)
Game 1: He kept his hand mostly because he had a Garruk 3.0 in hand. I killed his Garruk with a beast within and slowly took the game from there.
SB: -1 Thrun, -1 Rampant growth, -1 solemn simulacrum, +2 SoWaP, +1 SoFaF
Game 2: I played a wurmcoil turn 4 after going 2-4-6 on my ramps. He had an O-ring for my wurmcoil and thus my downfall ensued.
Game 3: Again I curved out well but this time he didn’t have an answer. To get the game, I swung with inkmoth/titan/dungrove. Whichever he didn’t block, was getting pumped for lethal.
Round 4: Kevin Du UW Aggro Control (0-0)
We drew to get into top 4.
Round 5: Justice Gibson GW Township Tokens (1-2)
Game 1: This matchup is probably the worst for my deck and he knew it too. Game 1 he curves our really well and leads garruk into Elspeth into game. I dropped a wurmcoil but he had the O-ring.
SB: -1 Thrun, -1 SoFaF, -3 Garruk, +2 Sowap, +3 ratchet bomb
Game 2: I stick a dungrove turn 3 with 4 mana then turn 4 play and equip a sowap and hit to game life. The following turn I played another dungrove and by turn 6, I had 2 sworded dungroves. Hit him for exactly 20.
Game 3: This game was bad for me. Mulled to 6 and kept a 2 lander. Missed some land drops while he went mana dork, mana dork, mana dork and turn 3 he equipped a sofaf on and then he followed up with ANOTHER sofaf. Needless to say, he won.
Fun day of games. I played the mono green but saw no control so it was a tad iffy. I may switch back to the RG version or even considered a GW version of the deck. We shall see where i take the deck next. -

Round 1: Riley Hills RG Ramp (2-0)
Game 1: He got mana screwed and I took the game with lots of infect and damage through wurmcoil. He was playing RG ramp with titans (both), splinterfright, and stromkirk.
SB: +2 swords, -1 batterskull, -1 Thrun
Game 2: Ramp and got turn 4 titan. Turn 5 garruk, draw 6 off the titan. Game won after drawing 3 green sun, 1 dungrove, and a sword. Animate inkmoth, equip with sword, hit, untap, pretty good!
Round 2: Steven Gaede UB Control (2-0)
Game 1: This is played by one of my friends and he hates playing control but borrowed a deck. I had an Emissary turn 2. Beast within on his turn 3 upkeep. He let it go so was down a land. Then chumped my emissary so I got another land. . Drop garruk and draw 6. Game shortly after.
SB: -3 emissary, -1 slime, -1 batterskull, -2 wurmcoil, -1 beast within. +4 mayor, +2 swords, +2 Thrun
Game 2: Birds turn 1 then a mayor. Mayor flips and sticks till the end of the game 4 turns later. Turn 3 Solemn (countered). Turn ¾ mayor beats. Turn 4 Thrun. Turn 5 game. He had spellskites but didn’t help.
Round 3: Paul Mulvaney RW Metalcraft (2-0)
Game 1: He played some glint hawk idols but missed drawing white land until turn 4. I had a good draw so I got the 2-4-6 titan and game shortly after. He played DoJ but I had wurmcoil and batterskull for game.
SB: +2 sword, -1 Thrun, -1 acidic slime
Game 2: He surprisingly let me play. This is one of my friends so I kindly told him it’s a bad idea but he still let me. I played a birds turn 1 that he blasted. Turn 3 I dropped a dungrove and went to beat down. Game ended as I kept the pressure on and played a titan to have the kessig-inkmoth backup.
Round 4: Marshall Lake RUG (0-0)
We drew to get into top 4.
Round 5: Jeremy Adams UB Control (2-1)
Game 1: Early beast within on his darkslick shores that got past a counter spell. Kept him off of black and he missed a land drop turn 3. Overall, beatdown with the dungrove I was able to sneak in. He managed to kill it with life’s finale then stripped my maindeck thrun and 2 more dungroves. Either way, it came down to primeval and inkmoth and kessig.
SB: -1 acidic slime, -3 emissary, -1 wurmcoil engine, -1 beast within, -1 primeval, -1 batterskull. +4 mayor of avabruck, +2 sword of feast and famine, +2 Thrun
Game 2: He had a hand full of removal and counterspells and proceeded to play 3 snapcasters. Needless to say, he took the game. I played a beast within on my land for a 3/3 token but he redirected to spellskite. He ended up beating me from 20 to 0 with a snapcaster and a beast.
Game 3: Mulligan to 6. 2 lands but Thrun and a green sun. On the play. Turn 2 drew a mayor and played it. He casted a think twice on his turn to prevent a flip. I used green sun to get another mayor and he doom bladed one on his turn. Ended up topdecking another mayor and played it. They kept eating removal but I didn’t care much. Ended up dropping a dungrove and a thrun and eventually took the game with beats.
Round 6: Marshall Lake RUG (0-0)
We split the prize.
Overall the day was great and I love the mono green build that I have MUCH more than the RG I ran last time at states. Some minor things to tweak but definitely SB was correct for the metagame. I would have lost to a kessig mirror but I knew I wouldn’t see one. I need to pick up my 4th inkmoth and 4th garruk. -

published the article Took my U/W Illusions deck to another FNM last night. Tweaked it a little from the previous few events. Ended up going 2-2 (6-4 overall)Posted in: U/W Illusions FNM @Matt's Cavalcade 10/7/11
Game 1 I started off with a Gitaxian probe to see a past in flames, burning vengeance, incinerate, mana leak, and lands. I knew what deck it was so I just went with the quick aggro beats and didn't think about sideboarding. Turn 5 I stuck a Gideon after baiting out his leak on my turn 4 Lord. Animated Gideon = GG for that deck. Game 2 I sided out 3 day and 1 dragon for 4 flashfreeze. This second game went to a long stall. I played a Gideon which he went all out to kill since I had the game sealed otherwise. I stick a titan a long ways down which he could have mana leaked but I had the 3 mana up for it. He let it stick then attempted to cast double slagstorm to kill my sun titan and the 3 copies and lord. I countered the 2nd slagstorm and won the following turn.DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards Creatures: (20)

Round 1: RUg Counter Burn (Win 2-0)
Round 2: RUg Counter Burn (Win 2-0)Same matchup again, woooo. I attempted to play a gideon turn 5 which got leaked. The following turn he tapped out to do some things and I played lord and 2 images. 2 turns later that took the game. Same sideboarding in the previous game of days and dragon for flashfreezes. My opening 7 for this game was risky but I kept it: Leak, Flashfreeze, Image, Lord, Bear, Titan, and ONE Island. I decided to pray and keep it. Ended up drawing 4 land in a row. Beat with the bear for multiple turns. Turn 4 drop Lord and still have mana up to counter. Turn 5 gideon sticks and game. Sun Titan was in hand at the end to take the game if Gideon died.
Round 3: RDW (Loss 2-1)RDW is this decks NIGHTMARE. I also was unable to find a 4th timely reinforcements so it made it a little bit harder. Game 1 was terrible draws for me and I lost shortly after. Game 2 I sided out 4 mana leak, 4 gitaxian probe, 2 dragons, and 1 titan for 4 flashfreeze, 3 timely, 3 mental misstep, and 1 oring. I drew 2 timely reinforcements and 1 day of judgment to take this game with ease. Game 3 was a race with agggro beats. Kessig pump on the phoenix got the game for him. I had a topdeck of timely which would have won me the game.
Round 4: BWG Junk Pod (Loss 2-1)Game 1 was easily his. I probed his hand and saw he kept a 2 land hand. He drew well with land to get himself a turn 4 pod then a turn 6 archon podded to a wurmcoil to save his life total. Then he dropped a massacre wurm and podded the wurmcoil for elesh norn to nuke my board and get the win next turn. I sided out 3 automaton, 2 dragons, 1 sun titan, and 2 ponder for 4 flashfreeze, 3 orb, 1 oring. The flashfreeze I slowly realized was a HUGE mistake since his deck does well without pod. One of few pod decks I've seen that can do that. Game 2 I took with a turn 2 torpor orb with lots of beats coming in. Game 3 I probed his hand and by the time turn 5 hit, there was only 1 card I didn't know. I too the risk and played Gideon. If he sticks, I would have won easily but alas, that one card was an O-ring and my deck drew poorly and went downhill from there.
Overall the deck was fine. I plan to swap the 3 ghost quarter for 3 moorland haunts to get some extra reach in the late game. Also thinking bout throwing the days in the sideboard and maindecking 3 oblivion rings. Going to drop some of the flashfreeze from the sideboard and tweak it to have the 4th timely and some revokes. All in all, still loads of fun. -

Round 1: Opponent Never Showed
Round 2: RDW (0-2 Loss)Game 1 I kept a hand that had 2 dragons, 1 day, 1 gideon and 3 lands. Seemed like a decent hand against an RDW deck (it was my friend so I knew it was RDW). I got terrible draws and punted the game. 0-1. For the sideboard change, I took out 3 probes, 3 automatons, and 3 dragons for 3 timely, 2 misstep, and 4 flashfreeze. I kept a hand with 2 mana leaks, 2 lords, and land. I proceeded to draw counter spells but his turn 1 stormkirk followed by gut shots on all my illusions hurt. He played around my mana leaks well by just paying life for the gut shots and dismembers while leaving 3 open. 0-2 loss.
Round 3: G/W Aggro (0-2 loss)I gitaxian probed him early to see an essence of the wild, a birds, and lands. I held my counter mana up to counter the essence if he ever played it but his tight play with mana dorks and multiple gavony townships really did me in. Never drew a day or gideon either. Game 2 sideboarded out 3 dragons, and 4 leaks for 3 timely and 4 flashfreeze. My opener was a sun titan, 3 lands, a mana leak, a bear and a lord. Decent hand so I kept it. Proceeded to draw 3 of 3 sun titans and absolutely no day of judgment or gideon. Lost this game after he stuck an essence followed by a birds. I desperately played my sun titan to recur a few things to chump but he topdecked a garruk 2.0 and proceeded to make a token then next turn drew 6 to play an overrun and win.
Round 4: BR Vampires (2-0 Win)This match was easy since his deck was just not very good. Game 1 I got GREAT draws and better than any that whole day. Turn 1 bear, then lord, then image on lord, followed by an automaton and a gideon. My opponent had removal but let me make the image copy and then it spiraled in my favor. Game 2 I sided out 3 dragons and in with 3 timely. I swept this game easily with gideon beats. Ended the game with life total of 22 and had another gideon and sun titan in hand.
Overall fun day of games. Lots learned and lots of tweaking that was done. Till next time! -

published the article Went to an FNM tonight. Played a UW illusion decklist going 3-2 (7-7 overall):Posted in: U/W Illusions FNM @Rivals 9/9/11
Upon sitting down, everyone around me felt the need to tell me the guy I was paired with was among the top 5 players in the state of Oregon, unfortunately I had no idea. Game 1 he mulligans down to 6 and on the play. I get a turn 1 bear, then a lord, then an image on the lord. Needless to say, I took the game fairly fast. My sideboarding option was -3 Day of Judgment, -2 Gideon Jura, -1 Sun Titan, +3 Torpor Orb, +3 Flashfreeze. Game 2 I was on the draw and we both keep our 7. I have bears and images to play down but no lord. He plays a deceiver exarch and pods into more of them, basically tapping and killing my phantasmals. Eventually I die to raging ravine and small beats. Game 3, no sideboard change and I am on the play. Opponent mulligans down to 6 and we begin. I took this game by having 2 lords and an image stick while keeping counter mana up. The 2 dragons I dropped took the game in 2 swings. Overall, everything seemed fine but I should have probably kept the gideons in no doubt.DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards Creatures: (21)

Round 1: RUG Pod (2-1 Win)
Round 2: RUG Pod (0-2 Loss)Again with the RUG pod. I hate this matchup just because I hate splinter twin....SO much. Regardless, I keep a 3 land hand after we both mulligan. I stayed stuck on this 3 land for far too long. I needed a 4th land in order to push my own creatures and keep counter mana up but no luck. He popped a seachrome coast with an acidic slime so I scooped. Same sideboarding as the previous round except I took out 3 dragons instead of 2 gideons and a day. This game I kept a 3-lander with lots of 2 drops. Basically, if I got a 4th land it would be over. We pushed it to a somewhat stall but I had him at low life. I drew my 4th land, got greedy and played a lord and an image. If I untap, I win. He had 1 card in hand so no worries but it just happened to be the splinter twin he needed on the exarch in play. I had a freeze, mana leak, and a torpor orb in hand. HUGE misplay but I learned from it of course
Round 3: R/G Aggro (2-1 Win)I saw this guy playing earlier so I knew he was running R/G aggro with inferno titan, primeval titan, dungrove elder, skinshifter, etc. I gitaxian probe him to see an inferno titan which spells BAD news for phantasmals I got land screwed....again. You'd think with 8 cantrips I would be fine running 22 lands but I guess not. For sideboarding, I took out 3 metamorphs and 3 dragons for 3 flashfreeze and 3 timely reinforcements. Game 2 was taken by beast with phantasmal bear and lord and an image all with counter backup. Game 3 was all about 1 for 1 counters early and trading all my illusions with his creatures. He played a thrun which I imaged to get rid of then next turn he drops Garruk, Primal Hunter. His 3/3 beast beats dropped me to around 6 life. I dropped a sun titan bringing back 2 images and a lord. Now the board was all clogged up and stalled so next turn I dropped a Gideon. He pops Garruks ultimate and gets a ton of 6/6s. Luckily my images were 7/7s. I had all his wurms attack gideon and blocked profitably then dropped another sun titan to get all of it back. All the while I played 2 timely reinforcements and whatnot. Game ended shortly after.
Round 4: Tezz Esper Blade (1-2 Loss)Game 1 I took with bear, lord, and image beats. Seems like the deck is VERY good with a starting hand of those 3 cards with atleast 3 land. His deck is basically an infect deck with swords as far as I saw. So I decided to side out 3 metamorph then side in 3 into the roil. Game 2 was early beats and counters from me. I lost this game due to a misplay. He played his Tezzeret and activated his inkmoth nexus. With that trigger on the stack, I should have roiled his Tezz but totally forgot to. Went to 8 infect and had to hope to topdeck a dragon or an into the roil or something. Dead. Game 3 was a stall slow game that I was thinking I would win but 7 land topdecks in a row got me a loss. I kept a starting hand that was 2 ponder, 2 probe, and 1 land. Ended up with TONS of lands.
Round 5: Mono Green Infect (2-1 Win)Game 1 I lost due to poor thinking. I was swinging him to low life and trading creatures knowing I can sun titan back with lots of CA. Regardless, I swung and left 1 blocker, and he had 2 creatures. Needless to say, he swung, pumped one of them to 10 infect. I sided in a TON of stuff. Sided out 3 metamorph, 3 dragons, and 3 days for 3 misstep, 3 roil, and 3 flashfreeze. Game 2, I 1 for 1 counter spell until I stick a gideon. My starting hand was 2 land, 2 sun titan, 1 gideon, and 2 ponder. I kept it and hoped I survived until turn 5 and I did. The gideon was knocked from 8 to 1 with his pump spells then the sun titan raw card advantage with an image sealed the game. Game 3 was much like game 2. I stuck a gideon which he pumped and killed. Wasted 3 pump spells to drop it from 8 to 0. Next turn I stuck Gideon #2 and stalled. He dropped 4 infecters over the course of the next few turns then I stuck a sun titan and the recursion made it so I had enough blockers to make him waste 4 or his 5 mana to regen 2 blight mambas and hit gideon for 2, which gideon just regained every turn. I think got an image on the sun titan and it was over fast.
Overall, LOVE this deck. Such a blast to play. A few play mistakes here and there but not bad. I think I am going to swap out the 3 metamorphs for automatons. The metamorph not being able to be recurred buy sun titan hurts. Also, was considering grand architect instead of automaton but automaton can boost the titan/images later as well. Definitely considering cutting a sun titan for a 3rd gideon then dropping 2 islands for 2 plains potentially. Lots more to play with this thing! If you all notice, the decklist is prepped for rotation
