Thank you on the semblance anvil, although I can't really take credit. This list is basically the result of my reading everything I can find online about the deck and pulling together my favorite concepts and pieces.
I have a Sculpting Steel in the mail so I will swap out for the mizzium. I have to admit though the ability to use mizzium mid game to copy whatever lock piece I need and then copy my win-con late game seems strong. I'm going to build without it for now and just keep track of my mana availability as I play.
I swear I own a Tezzeret the Seeker, but I can't find it for my life at the moment so I'll have to add this to my shopping list the next time I'm out.
I pulled the Shimmer Myr based on your recommendation. I am a big fan of instant speed activity in multiplayer games as it keeps you relevant on other people's turns. Alchemist's Refuge has been HUGE for me in my Animar deck in the past.
Below is the final decklist from my build the other night.
I am currently building a stax variant of this build. I found Mishra after looking for something a bit toned down (and different) from my fairly extensive animar build. Does anyone have a strong stax list I could take a peek at? I have found a pile of resources online but very few focused on the stax side (vs the storm side).
Current Build (TDB, Writing this up as I throw together an initial final build tonight)
Mana Rocks
I'm building around Animar for the first time and using your list as a jumping off point. Thank you for the time you've put into sharing it with us! Question (one of many): Alchemist's Refuge seems like a straight upgrade over Winding Canyons, did you consider it and if so why did you chose winding canyons?
It seems to me that Cockatrice players do buy cards (re:all the playtesting language used by participants in this discussion). Cockatrice isn't a particularly rich interface for deck creation without some prior knowledge of Magic and the cards you'll be choosing from. Hasbro does not collect anything directly from the existence of Cockatrice, but they may also be undervaluing the indirect financial impact that it does have (playtesters do buy cards). And they are certainly undervaluing the goodwill provided by the existence of Cockatrice (in a whatever makes Magic more enjoyable is good for Magic as a whole kind of way). Those using Cockatrice entirely to play for free aren't going to start buying cards tomorrow because Cockatrice is gone, so Hasbro really isn't losing anything there. Just a shame really, I liked it (and I buy lots of cards).
I have a feeling they are going to find this ends up being a LOT like what happened with Fanfic stuff with Harry Potter. At first they resisted it but eventually they laid down some ground rules and as long as the fanfic followed them they let it go. I would really like to see some player-corporate dialog along the lines of how to get an online sandbox for this game.
You can't state something without explaining your reasoning.
It's just bytes! Admittedly fun to play with bytes, but bytes none the less. Unlike all other forms of digital media, they are useless without the service provided by the company I bought them from. I can't take my card collection and play with it on someone else's servers. At the end of the day its a giant financial liability that hooks me into Wizards of the Coast. My physical cards don't require anyone else for me to enjoy them. I can play with them to my hearts content without any support from Wizards. At least with my itunes collection I can play it on half a dozen competing music players.
And you can DEFINITELY state something without explaining your reasoning (for example my first post). You just don't like it
For those of you complains about spending money on mtgo: It isn't a free game. You have no problem with dropping money on a piece of cardboard but a digital copy is out of reach?
Oh, so I can't just update my ascension deck for modern? That's cool. How much would it cost to put together a decent control deck? Oh, I see. Well, I'll just play aggro then, aggro is never that expensive to ... oh. Tarmogoyf, huh. That's cool, I didn't really want to play modern anyways.
Seriously, why would I invest in a deck when they are still smashing the format apart with the banhammer?
Yea I'm with you here... how can they ban GSZ to "diversify" green decks when tarmagoyf is an auto-include in any deck than could possibly splash him (okay not quite... but its disgustingly close). They've already said it was a mistake to print him, just correct that.
On the topic of the bannings I'm basically on board with everything but GSZ. Despite what they explained there are a good range of green decks using the card for consistency: everything from Elves to Melira combo to Zoo and they're all fetching very different cards. Not only that but at +1 mana the low costed creatures you're typically fetching start to become significantly more realistically costed. So I call BS on your reasoning wizards.
My buddy put up good numbers with this deck in the last PTQ we attended, the sideboard is a pile of phyrexian mana utility cards. My two favorite sb cards were tez's gambit and the black phyrexian recursion card both of which allowed for him to re-set in the face of lots of removal.
I would be very hesitant to ditch vengevine/fauna shaman... they're not the best ever against valakut, but they're very good against the rest of the meta, and they're really the only "good" card advantage engine we have.
Renketsu0 has a point. Can't we run gb fauna?
Here's a list of solid cards we have available:
Birds of paradise
Fauna
Vines
Slime
Thrun
Sylvan ranger
Lotus cobra
Verdant catacombs
Bloodghast
Inquisition
Despise
Necrotic ooze (gigantomancer, vengeful archon)
molten_tail Masticore
Spellskite
Metamorph
Wurmcoil engine
Doom blade
Go for the throat
Grave titan
I wrote this up months ago trying to find something that didnt run Jace's to play (I have since jumped on the bandwagon after realizing they were just too OP... ooops) Obviously the stoneforges have to go, but you could very easily play this with an equipment suite anyhow and use the slots taken out for stoneforges to fill in some more black (The color balance was pretty awkward) Maybe birthing pod to even everything out?
This deck did put up decent numbers against caw-blade and valakut, in the end the mana based is what killed it.
Its a great SB card in "mono" green infect lists that have been running around as its the only way to get a hasty infector for late game poison (in that deck)
Either of the other three can go after affinity, in that the other three were dominant in a metagame specific sense, and werent' stupidly noninteravtive combo decks. Anyone that votes anything other then Affinity(since academy isn't in this poll) didn't play then.
I agree with this post... if you haven't taken the time to build an Academy deck in MWS or Cockatrice and just goldfish it, DO IT. A modern Academy build can lock the game down or just deck you on turn 2 with consistency (with counterspells up). In fact generating 300+ mana and decking more than one person is a totally possible situation... On turn 1.

Found this thread which seems more along the lines of what I'm trying to build.

Correct. **** digital ware.
Because they f'd up, they should have given it some blue dependency.
