I had a week-long break from school, and the girlfriend was gone to visit her relatives. My friends had left as well, taking their marathon EDH sessions with them. It was time to get down to business, find a job, finish some projects, and maybe test for Regionals in between a bit of Daily Show and pirated Humphrey Bogart flicks.

Whenever I travel for a Grand Prix, there is a little voice in the back of my head. "Is it worth it? How much time is this game going to suck up?" Sure, winning a large tournament would be great, but the odds of top eighting a 500+ person event are slight.

The months before a new release are like sailing in tepid waters. The intricacies of the last limited format have been (over)developed, their mystique lost into the murky depths of monotony. Then the new set enters on a tidal wave. All over the world, players hold new cards for the first time. Marveling at the art, analyzing the abilities, feeling the bit of adrenaline that comes with noticing their pool has some power. Knowing they have a chance.

I don't want a straightforward deck for tournament play. Simple decks make me lose focus. Nor should it be too complex, or my tired noggin will start miscalculating. Finally, something a little off the radar is good. That's Death & Taxes.
