I look forward to getting my face smashed in by a city block, and a smelly rancid good for nothing city block at that :/ sigh. All my efficient heirarchs and watchwolfs will get beaten to death, my graveshell scarabs will die... many times, and in the meantime my life total will dwindle outside of combat. The apocalypse is nigh!

Seriously, the slum and Loxodon Hierarch are the start of a wicked beatdown deck. Chorus of the Conclave into three slums after beating down with Kird Apes and Watchwolfs places a incredible road block and lowering lifetotal should your opponent manage a mild comeback. Vicious. Black green white beatdown became quite obsolete. It could still function as a midrange deck, but definitly not tiered.

Abandon hope is what my opponents were supposed to do, but a card name works too. This is what happens when you don't do your research ahead of time. If you have a clever idea, chances are someone had that clever idea before you. Sigh.

Turn Acceleration is calculated by the number of relevant sources before the necessary turn. Say my turn is 3, and therefore only 1 drops are relevant.

    I Have 8 one drops
    Cards in deck 60/8=7.5 7.5*7&8= 52.2/60
    I add two 1 drops
    60/10=6 6*7&8=42/48

Why is adding accelerators making my deck slower?
So I look at the formula at the bottom and say unto myself, oh right, how foolish of me, division is written backwards in english than mathematics. Redface
    8/60=0.133 0.133*7&8=0.933/1.06 thus 93/106

So now I have an impossible number as "none of these values will ever be higher than 99", am I just supposed to arbitrarily set the 106 at 99?

I assume that I do set it at 99 and go ahead. My mana base is 23, so I simply accept the 87/91.

    93*0.87 =80.9 99*0.91 =90.1 so Turn Aceleration Actual = 80.9/90.1

so now I add my two accelerators
    10/60=1.66 1.66*7&8=116/133 so 99/99

    99*0.87&0.91= 86.1/90.1

So adding 2 elves will only improve my odds when going first. Does that make sense? Kinda. Now, if all that was right, how do I make the numbers show me that I will have one of my 14 green mana land, instead of the myriad of other things that comprise my deck?

EDIT: Thanks morgan_coke, and Sterling Angel, thoughts count.

I attended the Portland OR prerelease with two friends. In the forty nine packs we won as prizes, the six sealed events we regestered and played (two events each), and the multiple opponents over the course of the day, we saw exactly zero lightning helixs. None. Not only that, but we did not hear talk of the lightning helix. No one mentioned it in play, and no one said they had seen it. How this is possible... I just don't know. I hang my head in dismay. It was both traumatizing and unlikely enough that I risk exposure to my (most likely former) clan with whom I have not posted for many months with no explaination of my absense to weep and gnash my teeth in public.

Nieztche said that gratitude was a terrible burden and that few men (read politically corect "people") would willingly take it upon them. So when someone offers me money for being nice (this isn't often) I accept it after refusing once. If they don't want to be grateful, let them shed thier burden I say.

For the prerelease I was absolutly crushed in the morning, but one a draft undefeated in the afternoon. It's a nice feeling.

The thing about using our names is that I'll never remember them all. Usernames are right their if you ever forget. I'm going to need a list.

Art does not stimulate the senses primarily, art stimulates the mind. Art, beautiful as it may be, does not exist to be beautiful. As pretty as the mona lisa is, its not the art that moves us, its something else. Because of this, what is art depends on the definition. If hostess pie moves you to a deeper understanding of the cosmos, that that is art. In this way games, actions between people, nature, and the world in general can be considered art. But not everything is art to every one, but anything can be art to someone.

    Must run now to class.

Comics, even regular newspaper comics, are most certainly a form of art. They take the thoughts and imagination of people to create, and they enlighten their readers in the manner of art. There are other evidences that they are art, but unfortunatly what it really boils down to is the question of defining art. I can with certainty state that comic are art because they fit the definition of art I hold to be true. For others, it is different.

PS: Why shouldn't we allow Thwarter of Fools to activate its ability during an opponents upkeep.

    Part of the point of
tap symbol : target creature gains +3/+3 until end of turn. That creature's controller sacrifices it at the end of turn. Play this ability only during the upkeep phase.
    1/2
was that it could be used to kill things too. Like an unholy bargain. The creature gains strength for a while and then dies. I don't know about it needing to only be in the upkeep if it's just pumping, flavorfully it makes less sense.

About the recent attachment, I'm all for victory, but as the jaded individuals of the Ivory Tower...

Thanks for the help with the dormitory ban on mtg. Nothings going to change, but at least I tried. Here is a card someone could adopt as their own.

    -insert name here-
3 mana black mana black mana
    Creature-human
tap symbol : target creature gains +3/+3 until end of turn. That creature's controller sacrifices it at the end of turn. Play this ability only during the upkeep phase.
    1/2

I'm not sure about the colors, it seems maybe black green, but I am leery of doing gold cards for a contest.

Come on friends, the college I attend is a respectable college. The deans are inteligent, they've done their research. This is the Ivory Tower, the source of inteligent philosophical arguments and counterarguments. An appeal based on ignorance is not going to work. I need to convince based on the merits of the game and the merits of my arguments.

According to the deans there are six different groups of magicplayers being persecuted (not the words he used). None of us can find each other because the deans won't tell us and we can't exactly advertise. There is no way to cooridinate strategy, there is no way of knowing who knows what, and if things get extreme (which I doubt) the college admin. could start reading this as all acess to the internet goes through the college network. Be paranoid. Really.

Off of that topic, I was wondering, shouldn't we put something in our signatures about Ivory Tower?

EDIT: More specific info: Deans did not say what specific issues were a problem in mtg, the focused more on the early 90s rumors. I tried showing him a deck and discussing in a reasonable fasion. Dean took the time to look at it, but was stirred by the stories by a radical student dean.

    Arguments I have used:
-Mtg is not different than many video and computer games allowed in the dorm. Dean's counter argument: Its not possible to police intangible things, mtg is tangible. (Before you suggest online mtg, know I like having cards in my hand and refuse to turn to the computer)
-It's not bothering anyone in the privacy of my room. Deans counter argument: We don't want anyone new to become addicted to it.
-Just like anything else magic requires a degree of self control, we have learned what it takes, and as adults are prepared to handle it. Deans counter argument: We have no doubt you can control your exposure to mtg, but others may not be able to. As this is a primarily religious and academic institution we cannot take that risk.

Okay, we're moving quickly here Smile

Here are the people up for vote:

    Mach1
    Mono-G
    Cranky Crab
    Enigma91
    Ertai

I vote yes on Mono-G, abstain on the other four.

Someone mentioned that watching movies based on books destroys the imagination that was so integral to the enjoyment of those books. I also find this to be true, and unwilling to part with the enjoyment that those books gave me, I struggel to read the text carfully, and imagine from that what the author was describing. It takes alot of energy, but for certain important books it can be worth it.

Secondly, I've ran into a small issue. The college I attend is a conservative christian boarding school. Recently a dean took a dislike to mtg and it has been banned. He cites two reasons for the ban. The first is that it is contrary to christian standards. The second is that in the early 90s some kids got so into mtg they killed themselves.

Does anyone know what the hell he's talking about for the second point? And perhaps the Ivory Tower would be so kind as to devote part of their energies into an excellent argument why mtg is not contrary to christian standards? I could really use the help.

mathmatics are under the influence of interpretation. 2+2 may not change much across human history, but what about the difference between Euclydian and non Euclydian geometry. With the advent of non Euclydian geometry, a straight line wasn't exactly straight anymore, because the field of human being was based on a sphere instead of a plane. These kinds of differences get bigger as things become more complex.

Re Goblinboy: I live in portland but I go to college outside of the area, however I will be back for the prerelease later this month. Sorry for not responding quickly, I was traveling to college.

    I'd like to join.

Nietzche said that irony is the most pitiful of literature because it's sole purpose was to make the reader feel like along with the author, no one else understood the world. Those who read irony were looking for a sense of supperiority. Of course I found Catch-22 severly entertaining, so what does that say about me.
