Flisch posted a message on Eldritch Moon General Discussion ThreadPosted in: Magic StorylineOh no they killed my absolute most favourite character ever!
They changed the plane I loved the most into something slightly different. Nothing will ever be the same!
WotC doesn't know how to tell stories, they just try to kill as many characters and call it a day.
These are the reasons why it sucks so much to build up a world and write stories in said world. Someone, somewhere will complain that some favourite <thing> has been changed or ruined forever and as such the entire story is terrible and unsalvageable. But guess what, change is important. Change shows how the actions and events in the story shape the world and the characters. Change is needed to provide tension and progress. Without change, the entire thing would be just a static soap opera, where nothing ever changes. I mean sure, such stories also exist, but these are not the stories Wizards wants to tell. Magic is not like the Simpsons or Married with children, where at the end of each episode things just go back to the status quo. (It's not a coincidence both are comedies by the way.) Characters need to die, parts of the world need to change if the story and setting are to be taken seriously. You can argue about the amount of how much is needed, but in the end it depends on what kind of story you want to tell, and you can't tell a horror story in which everyone lives happily ever after.
It should be noted that Magic is, at its core, about conflict. The core gameplay is about wittling down your enemy's life counter to zero. You can't have every character survive things, because they're the favourite for someone. And I guarantee you, there always is someone who simply adores a certain character, no matter how obscure or inconsequential. Just look at Jenrik and Arixmethes. Most people don't even know who those are, but then there's people who consider them the best or most interesting characters ever. And no, Wizards does not have "something against angels". When was the last time angels died in the story en masse? And no, Razia really doesn't count, because dozens of major characters kicked the bucket in the Ravnica trilogy.
So yes, we get it, you are sad that some of your most favouritestest characters are dead (or worse), and it's fine, if not welcome to voice your opinions about the story. Afterall, this is a discussion forum for exactly this sort of thing, BUT I also don't think we need three pages to sift through giant walls of texts that basically boil down to "Innistrad is objectively a bad story because my favourite character died." -

Creating a potentially complex and strange mechanic may indeed be a gimmick. However it is exactly the opposite of lazy design. -

Zordrath posted a message on Magic Story Articles Discussion: SOI & EMN [No Spoilers]I think saying that Sorin actively destroyed Zendikar is taking things way too far. Sorin's original mistake doesn't actually make him a bad guy in my opinion. He expended a great deal of power to protect his own plane and did an excellent job of it. The fact that this also blocked Nahiri's call for help may well have been an honest mistake on his part - after all, it's not like any of this is everyday magic you can read up on comprehensively in a beginner's textbook. Keep in mind that when Sorin actually realized that the Eldrazi were free, he did make a move and tried to gather his other ally, Ugin, in order to do something about it. At Ugin's instruction to find Nahiri, he returned to Innistrad and found that she had already set her scheme for vengeance in motion. However, Ugin had made it clear that he wanted to see them only together and Sorin's own world was now under siege, so it's not like he had any easy options to go fighting the Eldrazi at that point.Posted in: Magic Storyline
I think Sorin's biggest mistake in all of this was that he did an utterly terrible job of explaining himself when Nahiri first showed up on Innistrad. He couldn't be bothered to show even the slightest hint of compassion or even acknowledge Nahiri's very understandable grievance, and talked like the Eldrazi breaking free on Zendikar was an annoying niggle he doesn't have time for (which isn't even true, because each time he became aware that had happened, he immediately moved to do something about it). Even if he has zero feelings of friendship for Nahiri, he could have used simple reason to placate her and try to make amends instead of being completely cold and dismissive. Once she started attacking him, however, I don't think it's entirely on him that he retaliated. We needed Nahiri's point of view to know that she wasn't actually fighting to hurt him, and that's probably not how a black-aligned vampire is going to see an attack by another planeswalker. It's worth noting that Sorin retaliated in a cruel, but nonlethal way, too. That doesn't absolve him from being a major ass towards Nahiri, but he actually has a lot less blood on his hands than she does at this point. -

Let's refocus the discussion back to Kaladesh specifically. We can spin the discussion of Nissa off into a separate thread and continue there.Rereading the thread, this discussion isn't actually off topic. It's bringing up some very good points that are relevant to the discussion at hand. Carry on.

Changes are coming to the Colosseum, including the name. The new Roleplaying and Tabletop forum will still be the place to roleplay on the forum, but it will also be the place to discuss tabletop RPGs, gaming ideas, etc. It's going to be messy for the next little while as we clear away the deadwood, move some threads around, offer blood sacrifice to the mad gods beyond the veil.
