I don't think it's meant to be gold fished with. it looks like he only turn 1/2 permanents he has are the Nacatl (which cannot be physically cast on turn 1) and Figures (Which I think is what he wants in the opening hand.)

I think the deck probably starts off by Botling a critter or two, and then dropping "fat" like Great Stable Stag and Bloodbraid Elf.

And I don't get why Jace has to lead the organization he so hated to be in. After all the events in AoA, with the Infinite Consortium Ravnica cell totally in ruins, what would compel Jace to lead its rag-tag remnants? Just because a few assassins and mages begged? And what happened to all the conflict? I wouldn't want to lead a band of people who were ordered to hunt me down! And I wouldn't want to lead them at all after I attacked their workplace and turned most of their colleagues into drooling vegetables. It's like presenting your back to would-be back stabbers.

Jace is a Planeswalker and Mind reader, he already has access to enough resources without resorting to rebuilding the consortium. They could have simply gone and said he returned to Ravnica and with the help of that weird sect who forged the manablade established a new group, with some of the remaining IC survivors joining him.

I think there's a difference b/w leading the entire Consortium, and just taking charge of the Ravnica Cell. He's probably not interested in rebuilding the entire consortium, but leading the remaining parts of the cell on Ravnica reluctantly might be him showing compassion. When a part of the Consortium, Jace lived on Ravnica, and one could presume that he at least feels some level of kinship/Comradery with at least some of the people in the group.

Additionally, if he has the Ravnica cell under his control, he could probably put them to good use if only to spy/get information.

I'm almost entirely a limited player, but what makes it good is not the fact that it's almost all creatures. That's the worst thing about it. What makes limited good is that you get to see a lot of different game states and a lot of new experiences and that the decks are much more evenly matched. Standard fails on both of these fronts because of the much higher degree of consistency in decks and the fact that some matchups are just clearly skewed in the favor of one player or the other. Why you'd want to take the worst of limited and turn constructed into that without any of the good stuff about limited is beyond. It's only the fact that you can do things other than just throwing guys down and turning them sideways in constructed that makes it interesting.

That's highly subjective. My favorite part of playing limited is using creatures that other wise wouldn't see the light of day in a constructed deck (Bull Ceradon FTW!)

The question of intereactivity is also a tricky one to determine too. On the one hand, highly linear mechanics (Cascade, Tribal) might make more interactive play styles (Aggro and Control) less interactive than usual (Like being blown out by Kithkin on turn 4, or Mistblind Clique locked).

On the other hand, eviscerating counters in standard forced the creation of a control deck that didn't rely on mindlessly countering ever spell untill a win condition could be mustered. I think that QnT like decks are much more interactive than the old Dralnu Control from Timspiral.

If you're working for the mainstream (as in non-indie) game development industry, given you're displaying a U.S. flag and I'm displaying a third-world country flag, then chances are I'm taking work away from you BEACAUSE of the economy. Thanks for all the outsourcing, and keep 'em coming!

Yup, never even wanted the job anyways.

Much happier being a dirty hippie.

    Must be the casual gamers...

Trust me, I currently earn my living by developing casual games for portals like Big Fish Games and PlayFirst, and if there's one thing on my job I'm getting sick of is the political correctness at an all-time Disney-high level.

Give me Tattoo Dash over Sally's Spa any day of the week.

I like Disney movies, and besides, those movies are un-PC to the MAX. Just look at the movie Aladdin.

On topic: Casual gamers =/= leftist (right wing?) PC-loving-explative-hating maniacs. Again, everyone here totally appreciates the work he does, however there is a vocal group that thinks his excessive use of expletives detracts from the quality/profesionalism of his set reviews.

Wait. Everyone is ok with the profanity laced in Dr. Jeebus's review, yet everyone gets worked up over the one time he says a card is "****ing gay"?

Sounds like a case of being politically correct to me Slant

No, people are taking issue with his profanity as well. Dr. Jeebus is probably one of the more respected set reviewers on the boards and people are now demanding a higher degree of profesionalism from him as a result.

Granted, we are stuck in a kind of "Beggar Choosing" scenario where we as a community are asking for volunteers to provide a perspective on the upcoming set, and then demanding that they perform the review in a particular fashion.

I will say that my appreciation for Dr. Jeebus's work in reviewing the set is greater than my dislike for excessive use of expletives. And because he hosts it on his blog, and on his own time, I feel that I don't have much ground for saying "Stop using expletives!"

Granted, that hasn't stopped me for nit-picking on Civic Wayfinder

    /shrug.

I'd also like to add that Civic Wayfinder has found itself in non-elf decks. Some version of Jund mana ramp run the card as a way to just consistently draw into lands.

I'll agree that it would be an overall better card if it put the land directly into play, but it's not a bad card to use in ramp for the purpose of "card advantage"

EDIT: I would like to add that I immensely enjoy reading your set reviews, and that the above was just a nit-pik.

  • posted a message on Tribal.. again?
    I don't think so.

All of the core sets had some degree of "tribal matters" type cards that would pump Tribe X or whatever, and they'd be surrounded by a collection of cards in the core set that would get pumped or interacted favorably with the cards.

I think that (With the exception of white, which basically got SUPER linear) this isn't much different than previous cores.

said charm is also crazy multicolor and right almost at mid game mana (it is harder to play for sure at turn three so it is kinda mid game spell)

I'm gonna have to disagree. The card should be considered on it's CC, while multicolor is harder to cast than mono-color, it's still castable on turn 3, which is relatively fast.

Also, I'm gonna disagree on the Draw>Discard suggestion as well. I think it should be 1:1. This is because buffing one or nerfing the other could create some sever balance issues.

Berserk is also green creature removal, which doesn't fit with the current color pie. It'd be more likely that they'd print a new Berserk that only targets creatures you control. Still, that'd be ridiculously broken as well. Berserk or variant + Ball Lightning = RG Zoo back on top.

I doubt the color pie would be what stops Berserk from being reprinted, particularly since the removal aspect of the card isn't it's primary function.

Thought I agree that Berserk would be massively over powered.

Yeah, though for some reason, I really want to play with Garruk's Deck (modified for efficiency of course)

And I think it's awesome that Ajani's deck has Bull Ceredon.

The only problems with it being a 1CC cycle, is that outside of mana cost, there isn't anything holding them together. The original 1 for 3 cycles was what redsai listed above, where each of the 1CC cards gave the player 3 of something (Cards, mana, damage, p/t pump, life).

Since duress already breaks the cycle, we could have basically any popular 1CC card get reprinted. (And I wouldn't be surprised if they included some off beat ones like Mana Tithe)

Yeah, I a similar vibe while reading the article. I think it might just be a pre-emptive; These are the things we might reprint(Bolt, Mind Twist), these are the things we might modify(Anthem, Dragon Whelp), and these are the things we're definably not going to touch(Raging River)

It could be that the new pump spell is a simple crusade for you alone (which would be Awesome)

    Well that's cool.

My question: Is it possible to up the number of other cards (Like making some of the 2 ofs into 4 ofs ) Or would that be a part of the 17 cards?

Also, are the 17 Cards 17 distinct cards that you can get multiples of, or do multiples take up part of the 17?
