A Day In Relative Paradise

This last Saturday night through this afternoon was fairly nice for a change. Me and the boyfriend headed up to visit his Mother and were surprised by an early sort-of-Thanksgiving-Dinner. Her and her Jereme's step father haven't been much for celebrating the holidays, so it was a very welcome surprise and something we all enjoyed together. We hadn't been up there since the beginning of September, and Jereme was missing her an awful lot. We had intended to tell them the big news - that if all goes well we'll be moving to Chicago come January - but decided to hold off until more details were cemented. Instead, we're going to make more of an effort to spend time with them since her and Jereme are very close, until we can say for sure when we're leaving.

On the way back to Cypress, we stopped by Card and Comics Connection in Conroe, TX. Card and Comics is easily my favorite game shop I've ever been to, and probably has the best customer service of any as well. The owner Rob runs the store all day and knows us well. Initially I came in to trade off some of our Standard staples that we know we won't be using for a long time to come. What I didn't expect was to look in his case and see a set of four Mox Opals, which I had planned to order online using some extra money earned from a commission project. They were a few dollars more than I had planned to spend on them, but I had two things going for me:

First of all, we had many good items to trade in - Desecration Demons, a Jace, Architect of Thought and several other goodies.

Secondly, I like to support my local game shops. For Rob, this is especially true.

With the trade-in on stuff we weren't using and our lack of attending events to trade, the trade-ins didn't hurt much other than the pride of having less stuff in our binder. I ended up getting a few extra things for my Ghost Council of Orzhova EDH deck that went missing when my ex took off with over half of it over a year ago (Wow, it's been that long since that mess happened??? Unbelievable...).

All in all I picked up my playset of Mox Opals, a Glimmervoid and Spellskite for Modern/Legacy Affinity, as well as...

Beacon of Unrest
Necromancy
Profane Command
Sheoldred, Whispering One
Sun Titan

For my Ghost Council EDH. The Volrath's Stronghold was so very tempting, but at the $20 price tag I held off since it'll be a while until I join an EDH League. Instead we got three packs of Return to Ravnica and Theros each. We pulled all junk except a Stormbreath Dragon which covered the cost of the packs (and was ironically the same value as the Volrath's Stronghold I was tempted to get...).

Deck Status Updates:

Standard

As eluded to earlier in this blog post, Standard is all but dead to us at this time. While we enjoyed the Game Day and playing Mono-R Devotion and Mono-B Devotion, the other supported formats are of more interest to us right now. With our schedules interfering with the ability to attend FNM or any other Standard events, we'll be focusing on Modern, Legacy and EDH.

Modern:

With the four copies of Mox Opal in my hands, I'm very close to finishing my Affinity deck at last. At this point I'm missing 2 Glimmervoid, a Springleaf Drum and much of my sideboard:

I've been wishy-washy on wanting to finish this deck because it almost never places first, although continues to show up spattering Top 8 lists in most Modern events. The first place finish at Grand Prix Brisbane has reignited my hopes that when the time comes I'll be able to pull ahead and somehow dominate over the ever rampant Melira Pod. I have some secret tech in development that I hope will eliminate any issues here.

Commander:

When I was modifying our Oloro, Ageless Ascetic deck, it turns out I accidentally enabled a pretty powerful combo by adding Darsteel Forge. Jereme was playing the deck against my unmodified Mind Seize deck (General being Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge). Once he played the Darksteel Forge and followed it up with Nevinyrral's Disk, it was nigh impossible for me to achieve any sort of formidable board state. After losing my board to the disk (which was now Indestructible, thus never destroying itself to it's own ability), a Sydri, Galvanic Genius came out and I began to repeatedly get bashed in the face with an Indestructible 8/8 Darksteel Forge.

The deck is certainly far from done being modified as it lacks direction right now, but what I did see out of what the deck offered and what I had sitting around was a heavy artifact theme. Here are the changes I've made so far:

• published the article 2 Years of Hell
It's been quite some time since I've written a blog on here. Much has happened in the last two years in a string of unfortunate event after unfortunate event, as I continue to learn and grow as a person in the face of bigotry and ignorance.

Two and a half years ago, I exited a three-year long-distance relationship with someone I loved very much whom lived in Australia. Communication broke down on his end, and when we were two weeks away from me finally moving out there - with visa and passport in hand - he left me for a mutual friend. I was devastated, that after us traveling half the world to be together and how we felt about each other, that this came out of no where. When this happened, one of my long time friends had come out of a similar situation and had just moved back to Omaha, NE. He had full time work and could easily afford a cheap two bedroom apartment.

Eventually, the offer was presented: Move to Omaha, get a place together, find a job and let's have a great time. I knew sitting in misery in the tiny town of Nevada, MO wasn't going to do any good. I had all but neglected Magic: the Gathering as a hobby because I met my ex through raiding with an Australian guild on World of Warcraft. Whereas it could be 7:30 AM there, it would be 10:30 PM to 1:00 AM there, depending on daylight savings. I met my friend on MTGNews when I was still in high school - when he was 13 and I was 17 years old. We were always as close as you could be for being online friends, and I had nothing to lose, so I made the move.

It was my first time being out on my own and fully responsible for myself since the failure that was my attempt to go to college in Chicago back in 2006. It really was amazing, and we were just as good of friends in person. We spent many hours playing Magic and SNES between me looking for work and him working overnight shifts. I introduced him to EDH, we got into Modern together and had a lot of fun. Things unfortunately got awkward, as despite an outward appearance of having moved on from my ex, an emotional void was left there and my heart kept trying to fill that void with my friend. The problem is, he's straight, and those longing looks I couldn't help began to make things uncomfortable.

We never really stopped caring about each other and being good friends, and I'm pretty sure if genders were twisted around we could have even been together. But over time because both of us are socially awkward and sensitive to atmosphere, we fed into each other's negative energies and it all came crashing down. Part of it was neither of us being used to roommates and it being an experience. He later on contributed it to that best friends shouldn't live together, but I knew we were both just in really strange places in our lives at the time. He had a short stint with a girl that he had known for a while and lost an old friend in the process and had a lot of drama to deal with.

After she broke up with him eventually, things got worse. In the end, I was forced to leave for my own safety after he took a confrontation to the extreme that came out of nowhere, rather than just confronting me about the problems we were having to begin with. To this day, I still can't believe the extreme he went to because we were such good friends and the fact that he never really confronted me about it. I won't go into the details of what all it involved because it's frankly very personal between us, but it was bad enough that I had to leave for my own safety and well being. I even questioned if he had started drinking or getting into drugs because it was so unlike him and so bizarre.

The lease was about to expire in two weeks, regardless, and I didn't have a place lined up yet. He had always been my transportation to work because I hadn't been able to get my driver's license or even afford to get a car, really. For a few weeks coming up to the meltdown with Kyle, I had been hanging out with my friend Justin and his boyfriend, introducing them to Avatar, Legend of Korra and Game of Thrones. Eventually, I offered the idea of getting a place together. It would help them out as they're living at Justin's Mom's and Step Dad's out in a trailer park with his Step Dad being a raging alcoholic and bigot (as well as his Step Brother, who liked to go to the bar after his Alcoholics Anonymous meetings).

The day that the meltdown with Kyle happened, they helped me pack up what I could and we headed out to his Mom's. This was my first time ever staying at a trailer park, and it was half an hour from where I worked. We would hang out at Panera Bread a lot for the Wifi and I showed them how to play Magic and several other things. Unfortunately, Justin was very much under his Mother's thumb. He tried to find work but didn't have much luck, as his Mother assumed the worst about me and didn't trust me. Eventually, as you expect of trailer park trash where alcoholics are concerned, things blue up with his Mother and Step Father and so we all went and I paid for a room at a Value Inn for the rest of the week.

At this point, fortune continued to avoid being on my side and Justin developed a tooth infection. His mother being the type of person she is gave him an ultimatum: If he didn't stop trying to get a place with me and didn't come back home immediately, then she would not take him to get his tooth taken care of. After spending a good sum of money on application fees for apartments and getting declined due to his boyfriend being under 20 years old and putting money down for the room at the Value Inn for the week, I was next to broke. Justin's mom got to him more and more and before long I no longer had transportation to work. I was still avoiding my old apartment for the sake of my own safety, so I stayed and toughed it out for a week eating uncooked ramen.

Eventually that week through some Facebook posts, a guy I met online whom I met in person once reached out to me after questioning me about a vague Facebook update I had posted. We had only met once before. We had quite a bit of interests in common, but personality-wise weren't compatible, I wasn't attracted to him and he tried to force himself on me, sexually speaking. As you can imagine, I was more than a little hesitant about taking him up on the idea of staying with him. But, two things were going for me: I had an online thing going with a guy nearby and we were both really interested in each other. Secondly, once again I was in the position of not having anything to lose.

I knew Drew's apartment was small from the one time I had met up with him before, but he had enough closet space for my things and his sofa was a futon and so I had a bed. I made the mistake of focusing on something I shouldn't have at the time and the guy I was interested in - Josh - wanted to come visit and comfort me with all the stress and negative going-on's for the past month and a half. So, I saw Justin and his boyfriend one last time before I never heard from them again, and we took a two hour drive out to meet Josh and pick him up so he could come stay with me at Drew's place and visit. I had Drew's approval and three gay guys in an apartment couldn't be all that bad, right?

In retrospect, Josh's story and background were dubious at best, and there were many red flags I should have seen. Unfortunately, in desperate times one can become desperate for that affection and can fall into the trap of trying to acquire it at any cost... and I did just that. As we pulled up to the old farm house that he was currently living in and getting by working as a farmhand at, I should have seen it then: There he walked out, wearing a nearly transparent shirt, with jeans so ripped up that you could see his underwear and one of his ass cheeks. I helped him get his luggage bag and large trash bag of clothes into the back of Justin's van and then we were off.

The next month and a half became a blur and a living nightmare. Upon picking him up, he acted fine and just as interested as he ever did online. Over time, though, all the things he said and that I knew about him and what we had with each other turned out to be lies. He continued to use hook-up websites while telling me he was just making friends and making me feel like I was the crazy one for not believing him, while he continued to want "alone time" and used excuses like that he was a "Leo" and other bull**** that makes my blood boil to think about. Despite us both loving Magic, anime and gaming in general, he was a sociopath and con artist. While he went on walks, he had guys waiting in the parking lot two blocks over so he could go hook up with them and then come back. Eventually we broke up despite him having nowhere to go and us being stuck in Drew's one bedroom apartment together. I was utterly depressed at this point and was laid off from work and lost my job at the same time.

There are so many small personal details that I haven't covered that made that relatively small period of time a nightmare. Constantly feeling sick from stress and the psychological games to that feeling of desperation because I knew what he was doing and didn't want to believe it. Eventually after the break up, he was forced to move out because both me and Drew learned to recognize his bull**** and he wasn't fooling anyone anymore. I ruined an attempt of his to scam some guy in North Carolina into paying for a flight to move him out there to live with him, and he was forced to shack up with some guy he had been hooking up with behind our backs in Omaha. It was so quiet afterwards, and so strange.

Despite all this, I had gotten a new job for the company that Drew had been working for and things were looking brighter. But, I wasn't past it all yet... not by a long shot...

The idea of this build is to use the early Mana Ramp via Elvish Mystic and Voyager Satyr to ramp into Monstrous Polukranos or be able to afford early Bestows using Erebos's Emissary and Nighthowler. Excess "mana dorks" can be discarded to Erebos's Emissary or Commune with the Gods to pump Nighthowler, while 9 removal spells help fill up the opponent's graveyard to assist the graveyard count (as well as pave the way for large hitters to go through unhindered).

So I started first here by trying to look at my mana and mana fixing:

1 Azorius Cluestone
1 Azorius Guildgate

1 Boros Cluestone
1 Boros Guildgate

2 Golgari Cluestone

1 Gruul Cluestone
1 Stomping Ground

1 Izzet Guildgate

1 Orzhov Guildgate

White sources - 5; Blue - 3; Black - 3; Red - 5; Green - 4

Trying not to get cluestones too much weight and looking at land, I had more Red than anything. My initial thought was to play some kind of Red, but then I started looking through my spells and forming a strategy, looking for combos.

In :symu:/:symg:, I had some pretty nice stuff:

Fathom Mage + Give//Take was a combo that screamed out at me, or even using it on the Elusive Krasis since he was unblockable. For spells, I saw the following as decent:

With this little support from U/G, I wouldn't be able to play a two-color deck with only a splash. I also knew that I didn't have any U/G gates or cluestones. I had several green sources that, to be used, would be splashed with black or red. This meant that one of these colors would have to serve as the splash if I wanted to play U/G.

After going over U/G, I noticed something about Black: I have a ton of tempting removal in this pool and what I think are nice creatures.

I also had Varolz, the Scar Striped, Putrefy and Dread Mangler in my :symb::symg: pile. Black was looking really powerful. The only problem was, while I had 2 Golgari Cluestone, I didn't have a single Golgari Guildgate, or black from any Guildgate source.

In Red, I had a few goodies:

But the green splash again provided some excellent cards in the form of 2 Zhur-Taa Druid and Armed//Dangerous.

White didn't impress me much outside of Concordia Pegasus with it's flying, and the multicolor white in Righteous Authority and Skynight Legionnaire.

At this point, even though I loved my :symu::symg: setup, I felt like most of my power cards lied in :symb::symg:.

At this point I wondered if I wanted green to be my other main color, or my splash. I knew I wouldn't be able to play Green as my secondary color with a Blue splash for my beloved U/G set-up, because I didn't have the mana support for it. My Golgari mana setup is based in Clue Stones, and I don't have any Simic support at all - my mana would be a complete mess. At this point, I felt Red was my only option because I had a lot of support there. If I went this route, I felt Red was going to become my secondary color and green my splash, albeit a heavy one.

Was what I ended up with. I hate to cut something to fit 17 lands in, and it ended up being Give//Take, because I didn't feel anything else should really be cut. I love the idea of a permanent +3/+3 for 3 mana, but the effects of the other spells felt more potent to me.

My adventures over the last few years have taken me to many places and provided quite a few opportunities to put myself in a place to take my next steps in life. After a long chain of events that I can only sum up as being bull****, one of my oldest and best friends suggested I should move in with him and his girlfriend whom are currently located in Texas. There were more game design companies down there and his girlfriend was going to work on the southern side of Houston. They had landed in a house out in some place called Normangee which was basically the size of one city block, and she was living in a motel during the week because they lived that far away from Houston. They were searching for a new place at the time, so concerns about potentially not being able to find a job were put to rest.

It took them a long time to find a place because he had a lot of requirements: Open yard, land, a place that would take three dogs and... a fluctuating number of various species of birds including doves, chickens, roosters, quail, pigeons and whatever other feathered, beaked creatures he could find. He had always been an animal person and wanted to major in Biology. I always argued with him that while I appreciated his love of animals that he needed to set his priorities straight, and that included making it easier for his sugar momma maid slave girlfriend to get to work and provide for them. His response was, as always, that the birds make him happy. Over the years of knowing him, I'd never known him to be happy because he always manages to find new ways to make himself miserable (often related to his animals, ironically). He's anti-social and “hates people”, and so I just came to the conclusion that he tries to replace the human need to socialize with animals.

I wasn't disappointed as my expectations were set pretty low knowing well that his priorities are never aligned with that of a normal person. When a mutual friend who was a relastate agent came up with nothing close to the city that would allow him to have all these animals, he took it upon himself to solve the issue. He ended up finding some Filipino lady that was looking to rent a house out in a town called Beasley, an hour or more away from where his girlfriend works. Being that this was the only place that met all his unrealistic expectations, we ended up moving in there. By now I had gotten used to the smell of living at a zoo between the chickens he kept inside, the three dogs, the lizard cage and so on. But even then, my nostrils were assaulted with the smell of an even bigger zoo. As we pulled up to the house to start unloading, I couldn't help but notice that this house used to be a barn. How fitting. There were roosters and chickens all over the yard that remained there, slowly dying to snakes, them killing each other, one of my friend's dogs or whatever else. We were stuck with satellite internet so an online job was out of the question and no one would lay a DSL line out there because it was a private lot. With no drier, I enjoyed putting my clothes on a rope tied down the side of the house awning where the sun barely hit them except during the late afternoon, while at night they were exposed to any loose chickens, a rat infestation, spiders and a plethora of over things. But my friend was happy.

Over the next couple months things only got more ridiculous. The old Filipino lady that owned the house would randomly just walk into the house when she wanted, she would free her chickens. He always hated that they dug holes in the yard and made the yard look like ****, but the place just looked like a dump in general. They'd fight with his birds, some times injuring or killing them, I'd get to hear him yell and curse at whatever random thing pissed him off every day relating to his animals or the ****ty internet. Haven't never lived with him until I moved to Texas, I never quite knew that he was so easily angered to yelling and raising his voice. Then again, if I did things that made myself miserable all the time, I'd probably be like that all the time, too. But, as par for the course, more animals were added to the menagerie. He decided that he wanted the house to be self-sufficient and after doing a bunch of reading online thought he was ready to get milk goats. $200 something later, we have milk goats out in the shed with a ****ty makeshift wire fence he put up. At this point, things start getting so ridiculous it's almost comical, in a tragic sort of way. The landlord and some member of her family whose relation to her I've forgotten both keep chickens in the pens still, so they come to collect the eggs every once in a while. Every time she comes, she lets her chickens loose and throws her seed everywhere. She lets her chickens loose because, as she put it, “They're organic chickens” and they need to be free. My friend, of course, begins to rage over this, as well as that (from what he told me) the goats were eating the chicken feed and getting diarrhea that could end up with their bowels impacted and kill them. Too much information? I thought so, too.

Weeks go by and they aren't getting milked and I repeatedly overhear him go on about to his girlfriend about how it was a waste of money because she never milks them, between him calling her a ******, raising his voice to her constantly, calling her “****ing stupid” and the usual. Somewhere in all this he made some sarcastic remark while we were talking that he shouldn't have bought all those mason jars for her off of Amazon to put the milk in. I just grin and nod as I try and figure out when she has time to milk them. She generally works over 8 hours a day, some times up to 11 and has to drive an hour there and an hour back, meaning between her commute and work hours she's spending 10-13 hours not at home. As soon as she gets home, she does any grocery shopping she needs to get done which can take up to an hour because of having to drive 15-20 miles to a grocery store then back, cook dinner and serve it to him because he won't touch any kitchen appliances other than the microwave or toaster-oven (add any time in she needs to take to cut whole chicken up for him or corn off a cob so he'll eat it), and practically everything else. At some point she sleeps, although how much is questionable while he lays in bed next to her every night with his laptop speakers blaring some anime or television show, and on the weekends they're usually gone doing something. So, the fact that getting milk goats was entirely his idea aside, I'm not sure when she has time to milk them between being his slave everything she has to do. I also forgot to mention that his their solution to still being an hour away was to buy a used car from a shady used car dealer that has had everything and then some wrong with it since they bought it.

During all this at some point he decided to inform me that he had talked her into letting him stay at home and not get a job. In the past, I'd always been told of how he had supposedly turned in applications here and there and everywhere and had no luck. Of course, at this point it's hard for either me or him to have a job since the car they bought for her has so many issues with it, we're still an hour from her work and she works long hours (She has to drive his truck now, otherwise she couldn't get to work). So between him posting passive aggressive Facebook posts for all the things me and her supposedly don't do, he's a stay-at-home dad for the animals, now. Some times when he wakes up in a bad mood, he vacuums their bedroom and may sweep some tiles. He does mow the lawn every now and then which makes the dump look a bit less like a dump, but that has more to do with things he's picked up from his grandparents.

Some times it's hard to wake up and see all this every day, to be sure. In a lot of ways, I'm glad I've seen it because when he'd come to me and complain about how terrible his life and everything is, he always made it sound like it was the fault of something else. The moral of this story and the lesson I've learned from living here, however, is that some people are their own worst enemy and that self-destructive tendencies are part of who some people are.

Have some down time at the moment so I thought I'd come down here and toss up a megathread for all the various forms of media and artwork that I dabble in. There's a lot to post here, so hopefully it's not too much to process Smile

04] Game Modding

01] Music

I write all my music using FL Studio (formerly FruityLoops Studio) and first discovered the program in 2004. Unfortunately due to a hard drive failure much of my earlier material is gone, including the .fl files for editing them. I'm a self-taught artist when it comes to almost everything, and this is also the case with FL Studio/music/instruments.

As a game art & design major, you can guess what most of the music is written for: Games I'm currently designing or game mods. Most of it is electronic or ambient but all of them are still unique in their own right and I've dabbled in orchestral, dark drum and bass and other "genres". In the end, I'm just making music because I enjoy it.

2004-2007

The music from this period is, of course, on MySpace. Unfortunately a hard drive failure meant losing all the actual files for FL Studio which I use to write all my music.

01. Digital Sunrise - This was my first real attempt at trying to put piano in a song.

02. Alien Orgy - The name is basically suggestive of what the song is: An orgy of sounds and an alien soundscape, which was really just me throwing effects at the wall and writing, and writing and writing without any real direction. I thought it ended up pretty epic.

03. Yuki-Onna ("Ice Queen") - If you guessed this was inspired by the Kamigawa card, you're right! A few other songs such as "Rakdos Underworld" have been lost to time.

04. Ninja Hobo Hideout - A track made for a friend from Doomworld who needed music done for his game DOOM 2 game mod.

05. The Machine (Redux) - Intended to be a remix of a track from Sonic Spinball for the SEGA Genesis. The original track didn't have much other than a base line and some electricity sfx.

06. Fear - Inspired by the last level of a DOOM 2 mod I was working on at the time.

2008-Current

01. Sonicspace - A remix of the Death Egg Zone from Sonic & Knuckles with unfortunate off-beat drums that I can't fix due to the .fl file being destroyed. It does get repetitive. This is one of those tracks that I wish I could go back and fix terribly.

02. Future Gone - Just a small clip of me attempting a more orchestral style.

03. Resonant Loss - A short interlude with guitar that is unfortunately loud.

04. I'm In Space - A dark ambient/electronic track I wrote imagining an astronaut floating through space from a derelict spacecraft towards an event horizon.

05. Shiver - Very dark track meant as an ambient back drop for a DOOM 3 level.

06. Nefastus Spatium - My first attempt at using GarageBand on a Macbook! I did this in about 15 minutes while visiting a friend. I don't own a Mac, so even though I have the GB file, I have no way of working on it further. It was designed with an original RPG in mind that I'm designing.

07. Quite Furnace - Named after the Quiet Furnace of New Phyrexia, of course. Electronic track for use in an RTS mod.

08. Dream Walking Away - Still officially named "Untitled 02", I stuck a name on it for the sake of uploading it. This is a collaboration between myself and one of my best friends in real life, IxidorVersionTwo. It's actually incomplete as we wanted to add more of a big finish with a throwback to the beginning, but I liked it enough to upload it as is.

09. Burning Starlight (End Clip) - This is the track I'm currently working on. Oddly enough the end came together before the rest of it, so it is what it is. The end bit isn't exactly set in stone, yet, as it's a WIP.

02] Illustrations

Most of these are for an original RPG I'm currently designing. Not all of them have been posted here, but many other illustrations are on http://xenphire.deviantart.com/. Many of them were down in every day ink pen. I don't have any prismacolors so I use sharpies to color everything.

Worn the skin off both my knees
Waited oh so patiently
Staring straight into the sun
Never thought you would've come

Somewhere sits an empty throne
Like we've always kind of known
Variations on a theme
And the sky began to scream

I will, tear it down, to the ground, and build another one

A million lies that now define
Us all together
A new ideal, all so real
Like I remember

And sometimes I
Get lost in time
Sometimes I fear
I'm lost in here

All these little strings
Holding us together
All these precious things
Can make them last
All these little strings
Keep holding us together
All these precious things
Make them last forever

So very slow
You'd never know
The moment fading
We watch the end
Over again
And keep repeating

I feel like I'm
Just disappearing

There's something to be said about a person who accepts that some things will never change. Some times, you can't do anything about how something turns out because it's not in your hands or your power to change it. But, still, some times we believe in something so much and there is so much potential that it becomes hard to let go. When that thing you're grasping for held itself over your head just out reach as you desperately tried to grasp for it and you realized it was in pain and you stopped, only to realize that you could have saved it from a self-destructive course.

I don't know what happened, but that diamond in the rough I found changed. It's many faces seemed to smooth over and it became rough... coarse... a diamond to charcoal. Burnt out, used, forgotten. You can't save it anymore because all it can do is crumble away. As it lost itself and who it was, you can only be helpless in watching the fires burn out until there's nothing left but smoke as everything it was that held it together disintegrates.

Maybe it was never a diamond at all. Is it shocking or abnormal from past experience that something you thought could be beautiful turned away and was a false idol all along? You can care for it, but it will never care for you. The beauty it once held hid an ugliness underneath that you tried to ignore but knew was probably there all along.

It's not better off without you yet you're already forgotten. Again.

• published the article [EDH] Bruna List To Keep Track Of
Posting this here to keep track of it for Jereme.

Why Bruna?
From the card text alone, I think it’s pretty obvious that you’ll be winning games by getting a lot of quality auras on Bruna and sending her in the general direction of your opponents like a very, very pretty freight train, Voltron-style. I’m sure there are other builds out there, but I’ll be discussing the most obvious build.

Having white/blue as her color identity provides you with the means to protect her (shroud auras, totem armor, countermagic) and yourself (defensive auras, …countermagic), which a lot of other Voltron Commanders are short on. More importantly, white and blue have a few cards that prevent your opponents from meddling during your turn.

Oh, and did I mention that the art is absolutely gorgeous?

You’d enjoy this deck if:
-You like putting the fear of God into your opponents because you can eliminate a player out of nowhere without resorting to some infinite loop that wipes the entire table.
-You like how aura effects interact apart from making your dudes bigger.
-You like to play with auras, generally, and would like for them to be more appreciated instead of being considered one of the worst card types (if not the worst outright).
-You used to enjoy Uril, but you can’t get over how easily he gets Hinder’d.
-You thought you’d like Zur, but then your friends complained about how annoying he is.

This deck might not be for you if:
-You’re looking for lots of those single-minded combo wins. (This deck has a combo, but it’s pretty hard to pull off and mostly, I just draw into it.)
-You just can’t get over how using lots of auras can feel like shooting your own foot.
-You can’t get over using Read the Runes and Compulsion instead of Stroke of Genius and Rhystic Study.

PROs
She’s new and pretty. Bruna has the crazy ability to take all the auras in play, in your hand, and in your graveyard. No need to pay for them. No three CMC limit. Just turn her sidew—OH RIGHT, she has vigilance. Bruna’s ability extends to your graveyard, so the main weakness of auras—that they die along with the creatures they enchant and risk massive card disadvantage—is mitigated.

CONs
What I would give to trade Bruna’s vigilance and flying for hexproof and haste! A good part of my efforts goes into getting Bruna attacking as soon as possible and protecting her from Doomblade and its ilk. Her cost is also somewhat problematic (she’s one of the more expensive Voltron Commanders), but six isn’t that big of a number in this format, right? There’s also the issue of needing to have a lot of auras, which are considered by many to be the worst cards in Magic because of the card disadvantage thing I mentioned. Thankfully, Bruna gets around this rather well.

Mass land destruction could be a kick in the gut, but when has it never been so? The deck tries to prepare for this with mana rocks, land tutoring, and countermagic, but that can only do so much.

My personal reasons for playing Bruna are relatively shallow: I already have a relatively-developed W/U card pool and I love the art.

Pedigree
Bruna hails from a prestigious line of enchantment-based Commanders, which in turn hails from a broader line of Commanders who want to have stuff attached to them and charge into the red zone. We’ll just discuss the enchantment-based ones. I also already mentioned that Bruna is not exactly better than either Zur or Uril. Picking her is all a matter of preference.

Zur the Enchanter – Zur is considered by many to be one of the most insufferably broken Commanders in the format. Being in the notorious Esper colors is bad enough, but Zur is able to tutor a Necropotence directly into play, which fills your hand with answers. Forever.

In my opinion, Zur’s only weakness is he’s TOO powerful. The person running him can easily find himself the target of the entire table the moment he declares him to be his Commander. Still, a good Zur player fending off three opponents isn’t exactly unheard-of.

Uril, the Miststalker – Uril is the Timmy player’s dream. He has inherent protection against those mean control players and their targeted removal, grows bigger with each aura you put on him, and is conveniently in the colors of Runes of the Deus and Shield of the Oversoul: two of the most un-subtly awesome auras available. His weakness: mass removal, especially of the Hallowed Burial variety.

Typical Game Plan
Mulligan Concerns
As you draw your opening hand, be on the lookout for ways to draw and ramp. Starting with a few lands and only auras might not be a good idea because they’d just end up doing nothing. That said, the deck contains a lot of card draw so I rarely find myself in a situation where I’d really need to mulligan--the deck naturally operates as though almost each card in it has cycling.

Opening Play
The plan for the first few turns is to establish a mana base. Ideally, this would involve playing some mana rocks, or pushing a few land drops ahead with Terrain Generator and/or Walking Atlas. It’s very important to not miss any land drops, so if you have any looting spells, don’t hesitate to cycle auras so you can draw into lands. Bruna can get those back later, anyway.

Don't be afraid to play Bruna early if you can sense that your opponents are lacking in removal (a good indication of this is if a 'must answer creature' like Primeval Titan gets played and nobody does anything about it) or if you have countermagic in spades. Otherwise, don't rush her in because cards like Hinder and Spin into Myth exist. Instead, play one of the other creatures in the deck and enchant it with an aura or two. Most of the time, even something as innocent as Nomad Mythmaker or Iridescent Drake can grow into a juggernaut after recurring the Eldrazi Conscription or Empyrial Armor you discarded to Read the Runes.

If Bruna DOES get tucked, you're going to have to rely on your other guys to win. Thankfully, as stated in the previous paragraph, each one of your creatures can become a legitimate threat. Additionally, the deck contains enough aggressive card drawing to stand a good chance of drawing into Bruna herself or into a continuous supply of threats. Take care to use your other creatures sparingly as well. One Nomad Mythmaker or Academy Researchers is enough to start eliminating players while it protects you and itself with a combination of defensive and offensive auras.

Sometimes, you’ll get insane ramp, Force of Will, and Intuition. If you want to win more games, you may consider holding off until you can safely wipe everyone out. Sometimes you may just feel like putting the fear of god into the table and eliminate a player early. Even if the table panics into dogpiling you, maybe it’s worth it. And maybe you can still manage to wipe them all out. Depends on how gung-ho you feel.

Another thing: graveyard hate exists. The deck doesn't have any direct answers to cards like Tormod's Crypt aside from countermagic, and they can put a real dent on your plans. Discard key auras sparingly if you can help it, but I've determined by playing the deck over and over that the best solution to graveyard hate is to be continuously aware that there's always a possibility of getting your graveyard exiled.

In short, never overextend. Each one of your creatures has the potential to force a board wipe and that's one less spell to worry about when Bruna comes in later on, hopefully with haste and shroud. Never overextend the auras in your graveyard, either. Play carefully, but always be alert for a chance to play Bruna and knock out that guy holding all the removal while he's tapped out from playing Time Stop on some other dude. Then, take out that other dude.

Late Game
If you haven’t wiped everyone out yet, you probably won’t reach the late game because you’re likely to eat some sort of infect dude. If you do reach the late game, it’s probably because Bruna got neutered somehow, or you took the route good players (unlike myself) take and waited things out as your opponents spend their answers on each other while you gather enough mana and countermagic to play an utterly unanswerable Bruna. With haste.

Or Intuition into Parallax Tide, Parallax Wave, and Opalescence, then cast Replenish to win.

Card Selections
Draw and Discard
The deck includes a wide array of blue cards that let you draw cards at the expense of discarding some. While this is seen to be inferior to straightforward card draw (something that blue does well already), Bruna’s ability makes your graveyard an extension of your hand. In this regard, Bruna is more similar to The Mimeoplasm or Karador, Ghost Chieftain than the other aura-based Commanders.

Notable cards: Thirst for Knowledge, Compulsive Research, Compulsion, Fact or Fiction, Read the Runes, Intuition, Tunnel Vision, Memory Jar, Frantic Search, Cephalid Coliseum, Windfall

Tutors
And then there are the tutors. This deck has the dubious honor of being the only deck I know of that actually uses Tunnel Vision to tutor for something. There are also some land-specific tutors because Hall of the Bandit Lord gives Bruna much-needed haste.

Notable cards: Three Dreams, Enlightened Tutor, Academy Rector, Totem-Guide Hartebeast, Intuition, Tunnel Vision

Haste Enablers
A lot of the cards serve to protect Bruna until she can attack or giving her haste so she can attack immediately (or both!). Alternatively, you can wait for your opponents to tap out and sneak Bruna in via Scout’s Warning.

Notable cards: Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Hall of the Bandit Lord, Scout’s Warning

Ramp and Other Lands
Bruna can get pretty mana-intensive because it would be foolish not to answer her, so her mana cost does tend to go up. More important is the ability to ramp into being able to cast Bruna (hopefully with some to spare for countermeasures). It’s not always necessary to hurry into getting Bruna out, but there’s always something to do with a lot of early mana, like dropping Academy Researchers with Eldrazi Conscription tacked on.

I actually want to prioritize basic Islands and Plains over mana fixing duals because accelerating via Terrain Generator is more important and the deck has enough card draw to smoothen out the colors--and not everyone can afford the more expensive duals. Speaking of expensive cards, the deck would greatly benefit from Mana Crypt, and I do urge anyone who has it to include it (although I hate you forever and ever).

So far, Walking Atlas has been great. He functions as the Exploration that doesn’t care about color identity. He can wear auras, chump block, and lots of other fun stuff small, unassuming creatures do. A neat trick is to slip Hall of the Bandit Lord in at the end of an opponent’s turn for some hasty Bruna action. On a similar vein, you can use Frantic Search to untap the Halls and get a surprise attack, as well.

Homeward Path and High Market get their slots because it would be very, very bad for you if Bruna gets stolen.

Notable cards: Gilded Lotus, Fellwar Stone, Azorius Signet, Wayfarer’s Bauble, Terrain Generator, Sol Ring, Expedition Map, Walking Atlas, Temple of the False Gods, Mana Vault, Hall of the Bandit Lord, Homeward Path, High Market, Ancient Tomb, Thawing Glaciers.

The Auras
Here are the specific aura choices I made, and the notable interactions among them:

Eldrazi Conscription, Corrupted Conscience, Battle Mastery – These three are the main kill auras. More often than not, if Bruna slams into someone with any of these on along with some others, that guy’s not getting up. Never forget that you can use Corrupted Conscience to steal an opponent’s dude.

Pariah, Unquestioned Authority – Renders you immune to creature-based damage. Pariah can double as creature removal in a pinch--just slap it onto someone else's creature and it'll be dead in a few turns. If it survives, that probably means nobody attacked you. Unquestioned Authority makes Bruna unblockable, too. And draws you a card, which I value over the +1/+1 that Spirit Mantle provides.

Alexi’s Cloak, Eel Umbra – Flash makes these auras invaluable in keeping Bruna alive. They serve as limited counters. It’s usually a good idea to keep these in your hand instead of discarding them because they can act as emergency “counterspells” if somebody tries to off Bruna before she gets all the auras.

Flickerform, Vanishing – Also along the lines of keeping Bruna alive, this time against mass removal and similar kinds of nastiness. You can attach these to enemy creatures too, as somewhat expensive removal. Flickerform on Totem-Guide Hartebeast, Academy Researchers, or Auratouched Mage is pretty awesome, too, because you get to recycle their enter-the-battlefield abilities.

Vow of Duty, Vow of Flight – Aim your opponent’s guys at other players! Bruna can absorb these later for a damage boost. It kinda irks me that the two vows that are available to Bruna provide abilities she already has, but the +2/+2 has been relevant at times. A Vow of Hexproof would be nice for the next Commander product, but I'm happy with the ones we have now.

Auramancer’s Guise, Steel of the Godhead, Empyrial Armor – These are generic good auras that provide a pump bonus, lifelink, or unblockabilty. Fliers are common enough in Commander that Bruna can benefit from being unblockable reasonably often (although not often enough to warrant Robe of Mirrors. Ew.

Curiosity – Drawing cards is good, last I checked.

Other Creatures
While the deck does mainly rely on Bruna, I’ve included some creatures that can function as smaller versions of her in case she gets tucked (or I just need a blocker). Note that a reasonable amount of pump auras plus Corrupted Conscience can still kill anyone out of nowhere. Pariah and Unquestioned Authority can turn any of your creatures into a little forcefield against attackers.

Notable cards: Totem-Guide Hartebeast, Academy Researchers, Auratouched Mage, Iridescent Drake, Sovereigns of Lost Alara

Countermagic
Ideally, I would like to limit Bruna’s counterspells to ones that can be cast for free, since I want to be able to cast Bruna, and then attack with her. Foil is exceptionally good in the deck, though, because you can just pitch an aura and expect Bruna to get it back. Forbid is also good for the same reason—too good that I’m willing to pay actual mana!
Notable cards: Misdirection, Foil, Forbid, Force of Will

Consecrated Sphinx – Because why the hell not? Seriously though, there's simply no reason not to run it. Drawing tons of cards gets you more of the auras you need. The ability is strong enough that I doesn't really feel wrong to protect him if you can.

Notable Exclusions
Mesa Enchantress, Kor Spiritdancer – These seemed to be obvious inclusions, and they actually were part of the deck when I put it together for the first time. However, I quickly realized that I almost never cast my auras. They also pale in comparison to the card drawing that blue already provides.

Umbra Mystic – I noticed that protecting Bruna from being targeted or countering spells is usually more effective than just protecting her from being destroyed at the ‘cost’ of having a marginally useless creature, but I cut the Mystic out mainly because a lot of the effects that remove Bruna don’t go through the “destroy” route. She’s still a very good card, though. I might test with her in place of one of the redundant auras from time to time.

Diplomatic Immunity and Protective Bubble – Speaking of redundant auras. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of flak for excluding Diplomatic Immunity, but at the moment, I’m not impressed that it has shroud itself, compared to flashing in Alexi’s Cloak to intercept a removal spell.

Flux, along with every other draw X then discard X card ever – There are lots. I can make an entire deck with ONLY these cards. I’d like to believe I narrowed out the best (I did play with Ancestral Memories, though). Any suggestions would be welcome.

Sigil of the Empty Throne – This was one of the cards I originally wanted for the deck. As I already mentioned, I find myself actually casting enchantments very rarely, so I never pursued this card.

Faith Healer - I've seen this being used as a life engine, taking advantage of Bruna resurrecting boatloads of enchantments with each combat step. While I think the interaction is cute, by the time Bruna's doing that, your opponents should already be dropping like flies.

1v1 Gameplay
Bruna does really well on single player matchups, although I don’t think I’ve fought a deck that’s specifically tuned for 1v1. I suspect to have trouble with faster, even more aggressive decks, but I’m sorry to say that I really don’t know and can give very little input other than try to ramp Bruna out and hope to have counters for their counters.

There always is the chance of getting hit with Bojuka Bog, Relic of Progenitus, or whatnot. Most of the time, it doesn’t really cripple you because there are always more auras in your deck. It may be a good idea to take it easy on discarding key auras if there’s a chance of a graveyard nuke.

Wishlist
Mana Drain, Mana Crypt – Absurdy expensive cards that I would include if they weren’t so.
Entangler – Anyone who has gone through labyrinths of old crap cards looking for Rhystic Study back then should know my pain. DAMMIT, PROPHESY. Somewhat a redundancy of Pariah. The worst part is that I don’t even expect it’ll be that good, but I really want to test it out. Imagine having this on Academy Rector with a board full of tokens, though.
Sensei's Divining Top – Was suggested, then I despaired that I don't have one. Again.
Three Wishes - This shouldn't be too hard to find. I hope.

Changelog
7/9/2012
Replaced Hanna, Ship's Navigator with Nomad Mythmaker
- Hanna seemed like a good choice, but I noticed that she was too slow for the pace the deck aims to cheat auras in. The Nomad just goes in there and slaps a discarded Eel Umbra on himself and blocks forever, or Eldrazi Conscription and start beating face.
Replaced Swords to Plowshares with False Demise
- It's one removal spell and it's almost never around when it would have been relevant. Besides, I have a thing for shaving off generically good cards for narrower cards that serve my theme.

9/14/2012
Replaced Copy Artifact with Greater Auramancy
- Copy Artifact was more of a filler card, actually.
Replaced False Demise with Abduction
- They do the same thing, more or less, and Abduction can potentially steal something wicked.

9/15/2012
Replaced Plains with Reliquary Tower
Replaced Plains with Strip Mine
- Got myself some utility lands.
Replaced Winds of Rath with Cataclysm
- Just testing it out.

9/28/2012
Achieved primer status! \o/

11/19/2012
Replaced Consecrated Sphinx and Cataclysm with Righteous Authority and Ethereal Armor
- Both of the cards I replaced are very strong cards in their own right, but they didn't really help the deck do what it wants to do outside of being ridiculously powerful. Cataclysm did win games, but those are always games I would have won anyway (most of the time, all you really need is for Bruna to get into one COMBAT, and not necessarily attack). Consecrated Sphinx is always awesome, but when is it /not/? Whenever I win off its back, I feel the deck didn't really do it's thing, but rather just won with the sheer impossibility to lose with the amount of card draw Consecrated Sphinx gives you. Meanwhile, Ethereal Armor and Righteous Authority are great, flavorful auras that easily give the smaller creatures a punch for the early game, and boost Bruna by a lot when it's time to punch face.

Considerboard
Maybe do away with Parallax Tide, Parallax Wave, Opalescence, Consecrated Sphinx.
Possible replacements: Fool's Demise, False Demise, Three Wishes, Entangler, Angelic Destiny, Armageddon, Catastrophe, Careful Consideration.

Conclusion
Well, there you have it. I hope you enjoy reading through my rambling and I would love to get some suggestions to make the deck better.

Last night I attended my first FNM since Return to Ravnica hit the seen. Typically I head to Krypton Comics for FNM here in Omaha, NE because it has the best turn out and the highest skill ratio. The best players in Omaha go there for Standard, and they switch off every week between constructed and limited.

However, I experience a bit of a duality where limited is concerned at this point - especially drafting. Despite having played in full force since Apocalypse (but having dabbled as early as Urza's Saga), in Fall 2011 when Innistrad launched did I participate in my first Draft.

Maybe it was Innistrad in itself, but drafting was amazingly fun. I hadn't looked into that part of limited enough at that point to have the knowledge I do, now. Truthfully, it's a lot funner drafting when you're not convinced you need to pick certain cards to create a deck based around some archetype (Such as Burning Vengeance in IND/DA drafts, or Spider Spawning decks). When I drafted a Bloodline Keeper, Evil Twin and several other cards. I actually did well for it being my first draft and made it to the 3rd round (unfortunately this particular store only does swiss rounds so when you lose, you really lose).

Since then, I've had fun but struggled playing against the more experienced crowed. Those crowds have migrated into niches at certain shops, so I knew with Krypton Comics being a Standard FNM, that I could head to Coliseum Gaming for some more casual drafting fun and learn a thing or two about Return to Ravnica (which I honestly had not really looked at much outside of the key rare cards).

A really cute guy flipping out over my artwork and then trading in some of my now defunt Commander cards aside, it was right to drafting. My rare pulls weren't spectacular and I was able to rare draft a Steam Vents in my third pack, and I knew enough about Rakdos that it had the potential to be very fast, so I decided from the start to try it out. Only one other person at the table was in my colors but I was getting passed fairly decent stuff, and ended up splashing Blue for a couple Izzet cards (Izzet Charm, Pursuit of Flight, and a couple others).

Unfortunately I lost the first round 0-2. Both were due to mana screw, while the second game was more because I took a gamble with a one-land hand full of 2CC cards. Taking such a gamble is something you'd think I'd know better than to do by now, since it has cost me before. At Grand Prix Lincoln last winter, one of my worst losses was from taking such a gamble while playing Modern Affinity.

I sat around for a while debating whether I wanted to draft again or not. When I found out Liliana of the Veil had shot up to $30 each again as opposed to the $15 price tag she got down to for a hot minute this last summer, I decided to trade the two I had in for store credit. Eventually another draft formed, and I wanted to play Rakdos again. My first deck had potential and I knew it, so as long as someone else wasn't in my colors I was ready to try again.

First pack yielded yet another Steam Vents, which I happily plucked. Then, what ended up being one of my biggest winners for this draft was passed to me: Chaos Imps. It was pretty clear no one else was playing Rakdos, and I was almost getting a headache from wanting so many cards in one pack that I knew wouldn't make it back around to me as the pack would wind down. I ended up drafting a splash of green for extra removal after being passed a Golgari Charm, knowing that could easily be a game changer.

I went 2-0 the first round against Azorious after a couple frustrating games. I've come to find I think white is my least favorite color to play against in Draft, if not Magic in general because of that hat tricks it can pull that easily ruin something you feel you've calculated would put you at a board advantage.

Unfortunately I lost 1-2 to W/G the second round, the first game due to mana screw and the second due to being unable to overcome a board position. The second came was close and I held on for some time, but populate became too much to handle, and what I thought would be my path to victory ended up being my downfall due to yet another hat trick (whatever card that is that makes your creatures indestructible until end of turn then let's you populate - that card is common? Really, Wizards? Should be uncommon for the sake of limited).

Ended up being able to get a couple Blinkmoth Nexus with my remaining store credit to go with towards my current attempt at building Affinity for modern (now appropriately called "Robots", what with the lack of actual Affinity cards even with the spirit remaining intact).

Next week if things go right, I'll be teaming up with someone that was one of my best friends for a really long time to take on Two-Headed Giant Sealed at Krypton Comics FNM. I miss the guy, so between that and having my blank play mat to customize and show off my artistry, I think next Friday has the potential to be one of the funnest FNM events I've been to.

Peace out.
