I am using "Susan Cheewe" acrylic color..... any good? If not, what brands do you all use? What price difference can I expect?

I dont know, never heard of that brand Wink

The first colours I used were some sort of starter set... 12 tubes with different colours for something like 4€. Now I`m using acryls from Marabu where a small jar of a single colour is like 3€.

Acryls from Schincke are supposed to be good as well, but they belong to the league of pricey colours like some other brands as well. If you know you`ll stick with this hobby for some time, you should def. invest in more expensive colours.

Thank you, and you're right, the paint does feel like it comes up a little bit....what's the best way to avoid this? I think that the brushes I'm using may be total junk, but I don't know if that will actually make a difference or not.

The brushes make a difference, but the quality of the colours you use as well. I used cheap acryl paint when I started altering cards and had the same effect you have on your cards. Using very flat brushes and more expensive paint did the job for me.

I listed them individually in case someone really wanted one of them and was not interested in all four, so I'm thinking it will take a real effort (funds) to win all four for those that do want the complete playset!

Awesome, Cardkitty, really awesome! I'll definitely have a look at ebay to see for much they go

Xanth, I love your Argothian Enchantress! It's one of my favourite cards and I was already thinking about altering mine, now it's gonna be a much more difficult job Wink

The body proportion is execellent. The only thing that seems wrong somehow is the shadow of her legs which point to two different directions. I dont know where your light source is supposed to come from, but it feels wrong to me.

In the original picture the person is old. I left the neck and hand old. They are using their magic to restore the youth of the face. I was wondering if I should change the neck and hand. I was waiting to see what type of feed back I would get. I guess you answered that question, thanks. :p

    You`re welcome Grin

Btw, after BlueDeckDominates's comment I took a look at the original artwork and the hands looks weird in that one as well Wink

    @Laura
The Tutor looks nice, but what happened with his hand and the rest of the staff he`s holding? Looks kinda deformed to me, very unlike the quality your pics usually have!

I have a question about the ethics of creating similar/identical alters to ones you have done previously and sold for sale purposes?

The reason I am asking this is I am being asked to create a duplicate of an alter I made and sold as a commission but I am wondering what the buyer might think about having a similar alter out there taking away a bit from the "one of a kind" uniquiness they may have originally though they had.

Ive already considered the whole "what they dont know cant hurt them" but I am concerned with the greater ethicial question rather that the reasons that it can be avoided.

To me that would't be a problem. I recently bought a very nicely altered Volcanic Island from some guy on ebay and saw him sell a similar one a couple of days later. Well, why not? He made a good deal with it and even if he replicated it like every day, this card would be still really really rare.

It would be a different matter, if you had agreed with your client that you'd never again sell a similar alteration.

    Hello guys and gals,

I've altered another Fastbond and think that I've improved my result a little. The new version is closer to the original than the first one and I'm very happy with the part above the text box, but unsure about the part below it Rolleyes

Would love to get some feedback about the rock face, any recommendations?

@mustardknight: Great work with the island, I really like that!

Hey y'all, this is a pretty sweet thread! Lots of cool stuff, and obviously very talented people. I started doing some alters fairly recently, so I'm still trying to get the hang of using acrylics on cards. Here's my offering, what do you think?

    Hey Petal,

very nice stuff! I like your Savannah, but the Taiga could use some more details. Keep up the good work. I've starte altering cards recently as well and find it very addictive Smile

    Hi Amy,

Hello everyone! I have looked around on this thread for a LONG time, and I am really interested in starting altering cards. I was wondering what a good ballpark estimate is on funds needed to start this with a good enough setup.

Well, I started like a week ago and think it's good you get some advice first, it will save you money. Acryl color seem to do a good job and you can get a bunch of small tubes for small money on *bay, for instance. I'm not a pro, but assume that they're fine for a start.

Colored pencils don't seem to adhere well on magic cards, while soft pencils can do a good job.

I'm not sure about markes. I bought a few from touch twin, but they'`re quite expensive and don't cover the old artwork well. But other users of this forum are happy with a different brand, as far as i know.

Thats just the small amount of experience I've made so far - maybe it's a little help.

There comes a point when, if the brush is indeed too small to do a detail (though I would normally say "You need smaller brushes"), you can do one layer at a time. If you need an extremely thin red line on a black background, you can make a fairly large red line, and then "border" your THIN line with black paint.

Thank you, thats a good idea Smile I already got the smallest brushes they had in that really large art store, but found it hard to do the tiny details. Maybe I'am to clumsy Grin

How do you manage to apply a *thin* acryl color layer that covers the old artwork? My color layers either dont cover or get really thick, while the new color layer on an altered card I bought on *bay recently seems to be razor-thin, like a perfect part of the card.

Just flip the situation and imagine yourself on the other end. Have you changed the original art much? If the art was not change much or at all...and it was yours...wouldn't you want credit?

Although I am really new to this, I'd say that in either way the original artist should be named in such an auction. The original artwork is still the most important part of the card and without the effort of its creator there would be no alteration.

Anyway, here's my second attempt to alter a Lim-Dul's Paladin. The result is better than the first one, but I've trouble doing the details with acryls, like the lining on the cloak. It's really hard, even with a very small brush. Does anyone have some advice for me how to deal with this?

In addition, my color layers get quite thick. How do you guys manage to get your work done with thin color layers?

    Hi Guys,

I`ve been following this thread for a while and have seen so much cool altered that i tried a little myself. Here's a Lim Dul's Paladin I've altered, and I'm quite proud of it, well, for my first attempt Wink

Any suggestions? I've the problem that the acryl colors layers are quite thick and I'm not sure about how to apply them any thinner.
