    Paint and Present
    Return of a legend

Sorry for the delay, folks! It's been a busy week for me and I had to invest some time and dig deep into the old days of this forum to find a reference for this month's contest.

May will be all about an old classic, not to say a legend: Paint and Present! :awesome::hannibal:

Some of you may still remember this informal contest we had a few years ago, it was good fun and found a lot of love. Not sure why we haven't seen it for such a long time.

The basic idea is that everyone alters the same card in any way he or she likes. In the end we will get a bunch of altered versions of the same card and everyone can compare the creativity you guys brought into this. Some examples: Dark Ritual, Relic of Progenitus As you can see, these are from the older days of the community Grin

It is tough to pick a good card for this though, because it has to be easily accessible to participants and be viable enough for play to alter it. Widely popular cards are usually either too expensive or have seen so many alterations that they would be a boring suggestion. I gave some thought to this and decided to go for a common card from Dragon's Maze that seems to have the potential to see play.

    Your challenge:
Take Hidden Strings and alter it in any physical way you like, e.g. extended art, new art, whatever - it's up to you.

    Your reward:
The contest winner determined by poll will be rewarded with a digital trophy above his avatar and announced on mtgsalvation home.

More information, rules and restrictions - please read carefully!

    General rules

    • The work you submit must be something you created for this contest and nothing you pulled from your portfolio.
    • If you take someone else's artwork as reference, please provide the source.
    • Keep in mind your entry should be work safe, i.e. no naked boobies or other stuff of that kind
    • Silent submission: Do not post your work here. Instead send it by pm to both adunakhor and Blackbull. All entries will be revealed when the polls are up.
    • When submitting your entry, please make sure your pic/scan has a width of 300 pixel. If you can`t do it, no problem, but it would help a lot to make entries more comparable.
    • Deadline for this contest is 31 May, 23:59 your local time

Gotta say that I am absolutely in love with queengothica`s piece. It looks like an artwork you would find on magic cards of the old days, very unique, no mainstream stuff. It really has a magic feeling to me, maybe because it's a mixture of real paint and digital touch ups.

Tsjagatai's work is again top notch and even goes the extra mile to show some clan soldiers in the background! The Minotaur has a very aggressive and ruthless look to it and is a convincing champion. Well done Smile

The two pieces are so different, that it is tough to make a decision, but my vote will go to queengothica's this time.

Rest in piece and thank you for your inspiring artwork. This was posted by his son today on facebook:

Today we lost an incredible man. Most only knew him as an artist. A small few knew him as a friend; however only a select few got to know him as a father and husband. My father was an incredible person, even in time of strife. With all of the pride and stubbornness, he fought. He fought for alot of things. Mainly his families lively hood. It brings me great sadness to have lost a man I spent a life time trying to emulate. The last few years had become strenuous, but the little things kept him going. The picture with this eulogy shows that very reasoning. A simple day spent with his friend taking pictures and being outside doing what he loved. Much like the rest of his family, I feel he was taken from us far to early. There was so much he wanted to do, to name a few he wanted to come to my wedding and meet my family for the first time. Unfortunately this was taken away. Out of all this pain and anguish, I know he is finally at peace. My Dad had a lot of hard times, and was in considerable amounts of pain. No more will he have to suffer the things that hurt him the most. Whereever he may be now, I know he will still be fighting for the well being of his family. Truly one of the most selfless people I proudly got to spend 27 years knowing and speaking with. Dad, no matter where you went to, know that myself, my family, and your family have and will always love you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul for everything you gave and tought to me. From shooting my first gun, to the last piece of lead I lay on paper.
He knew I wouldn't leave him.
    He'll never leave me.
Quinton Hoover was a good man

    You meant "200 + 100" and "Courageous Cuore", right? (I must confess I'm a quizz lover :D)

Not a bad guess, but I was more thinking about "600:2" and "Blue-Face-Guy" Grin

...but apparently, I have been talking to you too much recently :p

Well, again welcome to our little art group! We are glad you are enjoying the contests Smile No worries about your message, we received everything

What I really like about organizing these is how full of surprises the entries are every time! Great stuff Cool

There are two addendums to the rules of this round necessary:

    • Your champion can't wear a helmet, but any other form of head dress. The face must be visible though and not covered by the head dress (I realized that I wasn´t specific enough about this)

    • Your champion can be fictional or an existing guild champion

    Champion the Guilds

We recently had the contest challenge to depict one of the guild paruns of Ravnica, thinking about plans to rule the plane and making decisions. Well, we are still on Ravnica, but now it is time to put the plans into action. What helps best to get your plans done and smash your enemy? Right, a good leader on the battle field, a champion :link::link:

    Your challenge
Choose one of Ravnica's guilds and make a picture showing the portrait of a champion or general, as he or she is leading the guild`s army into battle. Your piece must follow this guideline:

    - Portrait: I wanna see a close up of the champions face. Your piece should show parts of the upper body as well, but the main focus is on the face
    - The champion's face must show signs of battle, e.g. dirt, blood, emotion, etc. The champion is not wearing a helmet. Addendum: The champion can wear any other form of head dress, but the face must be fully visible.
    - The champion is wielding a weapon like a sword. Since the main focus of the of this is on the face, only a glance / part of the weapon should be visible
    - The champion should be recognizable as member of his corresponding guild, due to insignia or other stuff on the champion`s armor or the champion's anatomy.
    - Your piece is designed to be put on a booster box. This means you have space to "go broad" and put other stuff left and right of the champion, e.g. like the indication of the soldiers following your champions. This is not mandatory, though.
    - Addendum: The champion can be fictional or a "real" one from the ravnica block.

I know this one is tough, but I know you guys out there have a lot of talent and can do it Artist

    Your reward

    Round is closed.

Congratulations to Spade for taking the trophy with a total of 9 votes. Dont know how you do it bro, but you really seem to nail the taste of the community. Well done Smile

Runners-up with both 8 votes are Rezombied and Closetvictorian, with her own vote being invalid according to the contest rules. Both pieces were very strong and I am not surprised it was this close.

Good job everyone, this was the most exciting round in a long time!

@Tsjagatai: Surprisingly, there were no entries for this round.

My dear Bullson, this is not correct :teach::monocle:

FDW3773 has provided a very good entry for this contest and is hence the winner of this round. Congratulations! I was a bit surprised too, though, that we had no other entries, the challenge seemed appealing.

Anway, let's give some credit to the winning piece:

My vote goes to The Emortal. It is the closest to what I had in mind when posting the challenge and I really dig the simplicity of this piece. Lazav sitting in the dark on his throne like a spider, breeding his evil thoughts - thats fantastic. The way how he dealt with the crown/symbol of power is creative: Having the guild symbol form a metaphoric crown around his head is a surprising and clever detail. Great!

Tsjagatai... I think there is not much to say here. Again a very impressive demonstration of skill. It seems a new champion has emerged and will be difficult to beat! However, there is too much going on in this piece for my personal taste, I would have preferred a stronger focus on the parun and less on surrounding details.

Actually I wanted to vote for Jenn too, but was a click too fast. Pity! I like the concept of her entry: That the parun is sitting on a string of chains in stead of a throne makes sense for a little demon brat like her, and having her shadow merge with a hint of the guild symbol in the background is good idea too.

My favourite piece is Cardcandy's. The design is convincing and the colors are beautifully applied and give the piece a very unique look and feel. Well done!

Rezombied's piece is very creepy, I like it a lot too. Purely black and white drawings is something we dont see here very often. For this piece it is a perfect choice.

Bef83 gets my vote as well. An Alter inspired by Monet? No brainer for me Smile
