This. Insidious Dreams is the combo tutor. Add some source of card draw to it, and it's basically 4 mana: win the game. Its efficacy in other deck archetypes is limited (though far from nonexistent)

Play it with Hellcarver Demon's trigger on the stack for style points.

Can Ad Nauseum be played fairly? Yes. I've seen someone draw themselves down to 1 or 2 life, play Repay in Kind, and then tiny Exanguinate to win. It was quite creative.

    I'd say, don't ban it.

  • posted a message on Argument against banning off-color hybrids
I vaguely recall an article on dailymtg.com a while ago that talked about this. I want to say it was Mark Rosewater that wrote it. He wrote about the design behind hybrid cards acting as a color "or" rather than a color "and" as in gold cards (they look yellow these days).

I think he commented on hybrid card status in Commander as counterintuitive to him because of the idea behind their design. He also suggested a fairly simple and elegant rules compromise that I rather agree with: You cannot generate mana outside your commander's color identity.

I think the major effects of this kind of shift would be localized to hybrid cards, and phyrexian mana cards. Some corner cases described in this thread seem like very labored arguments against (e.g. Reaninating off color cards, Celestial Dawn, etc.). It seems perfectly flavorful to me for Chainer or Sheoldred to be able to reanimate creatures of other colors.

If the RC ever decides to overhaul the format. I think allowing "off color" hybrid cards should be the first step.

The more I think about it, the more certain I am that 2 auras in particular should be part of this deck.

    Wurmweaver Coil
    Shape of the Wiitigo

I think it's pretty obvious why.

To keep with the flavor of the commander. I only use foil basics from the set/block that commander is from.

Good in Big Black. That's about it. Oh, and Zombie Tribal.

I don't think this is true. I play AotD in a W/B Teysa token deck. It happens to pair very nicely with Cathar's Crusade.

I assume the gross misspelling of derrière was for phonetic emphasis and not embarrassing ignorance of other languages.

My Jhoira deck is often annoyed by Time Stop. Counterspells in general are quite good. And if your problems are permanents, bounce spells are like 4 Time Walks against this deck.

Flame Javelin for the one time you have 6 islands and no one sees it coming.

  • posted a message on SCD Jitte
Jitte is as good a card as it ever was. Swords don't really serve as a meaningful comparison.

Swords produce their effect through combat damage to a player only, give protection, and a stable size boost.

Jitte gives you counters off any combat damage (creatures and planeswalkers), and can be used when not attached to a creature. It is a more subtle card than a sword and will be the better choice in some decks.

Your needs are not always met by the most straight forward mule-kick card.

I've been impressed with Burn at the Stake. The two times I've drawn it, it has won the game on the spot.

We are getting way off topic here. Let's remember that it is Painter's Servant that is the falsely accused / mafia financier here.

    We need to refocus.

    Painter's Servant + Wash Out = Upheaval.

Upheaval is banned, so Painter's Servant is logically half banned, which rounds up to a full ban. Discuss!

Servant with the Invasion Dragons is pretty neat actually. Amazed I never even considered that...

I would say that this is the final nail in Painter's Servant's coffin. Everyone should probably panic that this build your own, 2 card Wit's End, Sudden Impact, Saproling Impact, 0.5 Gerrard's Wisedom, and Wash Out may yet be legal.

Buy up your Invasion Dragons now folks while they are still cheap.

Seriously, how is this a discussion? The only reasonable argument is Iona, and Counterspell is still a card.

I agree with the title of this thread, but not the alternate discussion suggested in the first post. It seems like a futile exercise.

I would suggest discussing criteria for a banning cards. For example: All cards that restart the game. By this criteria, Sway of the Stars and Karn Liberated would both be banned.

I'm not going to read through the various comments on this thread as it no doubt will be full of subjective comments and opinions. I will just state my own to add to the mix and be done with it.

Technically, the player is correct in quitting in order to stop the stack. The rules support his position.

However, this is EDH, not standard. This is meant to be a casual game. If someone is THAT hardcore about splitting hairs in the rules, then they should go back to standard.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone pulls that trick on me, I'll play as if my trigger went though. If the player wants to dispute my move, it's the last game I play with the him EVER. If the rest of the players want to also dispute my move, I'll go find another meta to play with.

That's just the way I see it though.

This is perhaps the most arrogant reply so far. As if you could choose to ignore rules when they aren't used in a way you agree with. In the original poster's situation, if you "just play as if my trigger went off," I'm sure there would be two other players in that game who would never play with you again, ever.

As to the original topic. This is certainly a very creative way to use concession. It serves to stop this infinite combo, but does it stop any others? And the issue seems to be "is it worth it to scoop to stop anything but an infinite combo?" i would think no. This seems like a corner case at best, but functionally no different than using a number of cards that make you lose the game (or near enough) to help others win. Props to the guy for thinking outside the box.
