The thing with Magic is that the whole premise of the game is people trying to best each other using a variety of cards and strategies. Some might do that by playing cute Cats and Unicorns and getting their opponents to draw on an empty deck, all peaceful like. Others will Enslave and Disembowel and Murder in order to win unless that aspect is removed from the game entirely.
You know, when we as educators address kids playing knights, police, cowboys and other roleplays that *enact* hunting, detaining or hurting people, the realisation is usually that the kids are very aware that that would all be horrible things to *actually* do and then those kids are often dumbfounded that us adults even float the notion they would do such things.
So, yeah, I believe most players playing against someone using cards that depict horrible things don't automatically assume that player condones such things in real life.

Invoke Prejudice - OK, this card is repeatedly mentioned, and should have been gone long ago. They were doing nothing for 25 years.
But Cleanse? Crusade? What the actual heck?
What will follow? All "hate cards" towards black are banned? All cards saying "nonwhite" are going to be banned?
This is nothing more but a no-cost empty gesture, trying to ride on the current waves of public opinion.
I'd like more to see them address the recent reports of discrimination regarding the jobs, intentionally not employing black or Asian artists / content creators, etc. Not these cheap shots.
Shame. -

Tormented posted a message on Cards Banned for Racist Imagery and/or TextI know that some of you took offense to my comments here, but for a company to seek out and highlight unintentional instances of marginalization is doing far more damage than good. As far as I am aware, no significant portion of the mtg community is using Cleanse to promote racism. Gypsy is a term that has transcended racial connotations and just means traveller/nomad. If a word is not being used to degrade/separate, it isn't racist. Use context, use intention - and heck, we have pictures to help decide if the intention (ahem Invoke prejudice) was racist.Posted in: The Rumor Mill -

Ban death mark while your at it, if I see a person of Color playing this card I will say he is a racist as it is a black card that kills white creatures.........obviously I’m not being serious here, everyone on this planet is a hypocryte or has been a hypocryte, including me. -

Kireek1 posted a message on Cards Banned for Racist Imagery and/or TextI find the hypocrisy in the reactions to the GF murder as sickening as the event itself. In the past few days, we’ve seen corporates – many with questionable supply chains and recruitment practices – falling over themselves to align their 'message' with public sentiment. A constant circle-jerk of ankle biting celebs extolling their own ‘wokeness’ by publicly rejecting racism and slavery while wearing appropriated fashions and diamonds to camera that you can bet were pulled from the earth by questionable means. And, ‘protesters’ ripping down symbols to historical slavery then posting their efforts to ‘insta’ using phones manufactured by firms that rely on modern day slavery practices to preserve their profit lines.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Then we have the decision by the bbc and certain stars to pull any content that could be deemed offensive. Do they really expect us to believe this is an entirely conscious decision driving by authentic guilt, rather than an act of self-preservation?
A lot of people live in glass houses and need to look at themselves before they start throwing stones.
Reaction after virtuous reaction. All heat no light. -

flaming infinity posted a message on Cards Banned for Racist Imagery and/or TextI certainly heavily disagree with the decision even if it came from noble intentions. Banning stuff you dislike, no matter how strongly you dislike it, isn't the answer. That's just going to drive a wedge between the sides and distract from the real issue. Honestly, what I think might really help is to actually give racism its platform and let it openly debate its heart out. If no one steps up to debate for the racist perspective, someone should play devil's advocate and really give it its time in the spotlight. So, exactly how well is it going to hold up against the harsh glare of facts?Posted in: The Rumor Mill
I personally feel that all this tearing down statues and moral purity is just an attempt to stir the pot or if successful, the chance to claim false victory. The triumph of gay marriage didn't come from banning things. It came from people realizing that "the gays" weren't some evil other that existed somewhere else. Gay people were their friends and family. Gay people were their idols. It wasn't so long ago that I was the first LGBT person quite a few people had ever knowingly met and been friends with. Now, it is a little more challenging with visible physical characteristics since you can't come out as black or whatever but being white, I've actually experienced racist treatment from older black people who I often even ended up becoming friends with. -

I guess the more you try to avoid the thing you hate, the more you become that very thing.
Oddly enough D&D and early Magic were criticized for Satanic imagery from outside sources, now it's the company censoring itself from within. Really strange.
I assume we are at the dawn of the big 21st century ethnic genocide. An anti-white one. -

All of these bannings make sense with the exception of Crusade.
Cleanse has nothing racist about it unless you force it into a particular dialog. Virtue's ruin as was pointed out is equally as "racist" and the flavor text is inflammatory if you read it as such. Invoke prejudice I can stand behind. Even Jihad and army of allah I can embrace because of sensitivity to Islam and the negative portrayal of Muslims. Once you get past those 3 you dilute the message to the point of ridiculousness.
As an unfortunate aside, I had poor timing to make a heliod deck last month - aka "devotion to white deck" and I had jihad and crusade. When I say it like that it sounds like a bigot. Did I have the slightest intention to be insensitive? Absolutely not. I just wanted white pips.
Trying to force a narrative where none exists is ridiculous, destructive and dilutes/muddles actual instances of racial/cultural/sexual insensitivity. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

If they actually succeed in taking down Nicol Bolas i drop the ball, no joke, this is not even funny at all, this is hilarious stupidity to the max.

This hurts me, physically and hurts my soul.
It feels bad.
1
This is lazy and kills any deck building if you simply have to play them together, its really really bad.
----
Artwork is annoying as best, but oh well, as long as this is just a one time thing of an artist, i write it off as art i dont like but that wont hurt much.
----
What the card does beside that stuff the green one seems to be the most playable one even without its blue partner.
But not really outstanding, still annoys me to see this card getting played (its like a "kid" and looks way too much like a card stolen from Hearthstone, and i despise Heartstones artwork).
----
Anyway, not really hyped for "partner" cards, at least the partner for Commanders allowed you to mix/match them as you liked, still somewhat limited to other partner cards, but this approach here with the forced specific card is just terrible design and should be avoided like the plague.

They completely lost any sense of what a frame should do and slap a new frame on literally anything they can, to a point its just obfuscating the game more and more , for simply no reason at all (i mean seriously, legendary have a big fat text-line of LEGENDARY that is much more present and highlighted than the frame of the card to distinguish cards).
1
Still shocked they put that into production and didnt see the gigantic crap wave coming.

Depends on how your group wants to play.
If you rare-draft (so you keep the rares you pick during the draft) it becomes often quite a mess to play.
If your group wants to learn and prepare properly for more competitive events, rare-drafting is a terrible issue (as people will pick any card that is worth like 2+ bucks just because passing that "value" feels terrible), so you simply dont do it and you put all the rares/mythics in a pool after the draft and draft them away one at a time according to the final standings, thats rare-RE-drafting.
This rare-re-draft has the added advantage that it allows you to ditch prize booster packs and make the rare-re-draft the prize (so the winner picks the most expensive card and so on), which reduces the cost of playing tremendously, makes the draft much more competitive and ensures that everyone will get 3 rare cards (more with foils included), and can pick the cards they want/need according to how they good they play.
So it ensures players draft to play the game, and you ignore the money of the cards for the draft, which is a major benefit to make the players better at the game.
A lot of stores do that especially if the group is competitive in nature and all agree to it.
If you have a lot of casuals around, some will prefer to keep what they pick (especially if they are bad players and have almost no chance to win and for whatever reason they are lucky enough to open expensive cards all the time). Other stores want to make more money and use to make a profit with prize support, as long as the players are willing to pay that increased cost per draft, that works too.
Extremely expensive cards like the Masterpiece cards usually got excluded from this, and players just keep them (as 100+ bucks are a pretty heavy amount).
If someone for whatever reason opens a insane pack lets say a foil Karn in Dominaria , you might make some exceptions and just buy another pack for that player, as the cards just too expensive (but that has to be the exception and not the rule, otherwise players are simply prone to steal cards and cheat, so its a compromise).
----
I personally prefer to rare-re-draft after the draft-event, but not everyone does.

In general, Limited solves most issues.
You get boosters, you get cards to play with and its never the same. You have to draft better, play better and understand the format better to prevail in the long run.
And if you play 1 time a week FNM drafts, its not expensive at all, especially if you win (if you win boosters, sell them, or collect them to draft with some friends an additional time, if its store credit you can just draft for free).

Being the king just makes you a target, the better place is the slightly less powerful guy that gets the money and nobody really knows about.
Like a manager from a pop star. They get all the blame, fame, and get dragged into the spotlight, while you earn the benefits and you can replace them should they fall.
Its a very classic "black" scheme and done in real life at almost any corner.
----
If you want to be the "king" in a world of selfish and violent people, you have to be sure that YOU are the most selfish and MOST violent of them all, so fear is stronger than the will to overthrow you.
1
I wouldnt say its bad, the card pulls quite some weights and its pushed enough to matter.
You really want some ramp to get the kicker, and with Song of Freyalise this could very well come down way quicker than people expect and then the tokens get the +1/+1 counters and its lights out for pretty much anybody.
A deck like this could very well be real deal in standard, the card simply packs enough push power to be relevant in standard.
1
The days of artifacts changed a lot since then.
In general for Limited a 4 mana 5/3 is reasonable and can deal quite some damage or get double blocked, you pretty much kill something for sure with 5 power.
----
Unblockable would be just stupid and the text book definition of extremely NOT fun.
For anything that is about constructed this card is simply meaningless by now.
