  • posted a message on Returning player, which box to buy if any?
I would suggest skipping the box and going with Elves. Why? Elves is one of the few decks that can win in Modern on turn 3 and building it in standard gives you about half of the modern deck. That means that after the cycle, you are well on your way to play Modern. You could also just go Gruul aggro and smash all the faces.

It is not a really difficult pool to build IMHO. 2 Mulldrifter 2 Otherworldly Journey = a metric ton of card draw. There is also BR storm available with Mad Auntie, Empty the Warrens, and 2 Mogg War Marshall.

    Ethersworn Canonist
    Arcbound Stinger
    2 Mulldrifter
    Spellstutter Sprite
    Amrou Seekers
    Hillcomber Giant
    Avian Changeling
    Kithkin Greatheart
    Saltfield Recluse
    Riftwing Cloudskate
    Latchkey Faerie
    Sanctum Gargoyle
    Ryusei, the Falling Star

    9 Spells
    Reach Through Mists
    Rift Bolt
    2 Otherworldly Journey
    Blinding Beam
    Bound in Silence
    Test of Faith
    Pyrite Spellbomb
    Lightning Helix

    LAND 17
    Terramorphic Expanse
    2 Mountain
    7 Plains
    7 Island

You know, I am very glad you weighed in on this threat, Thragtusk. All this time, we have been talking to you behind your back. Don't let the haters break your stride: haters gonna hate, potaters gonna potate.

If you suspect someone is going into Walls.dec and you are in blue or can splash it, pick up a psychic spiral. If they try milling you out, Spiral on the upkeep before you lose, and then laugh ^^

And my axe... I mean I'm down! One thing to note: if it is 4 PM EST then it should be 1 PM PST. However, being that it is Thanksgiving, I will have to be a Maybe as my family ultimately decides my destiny for this day, but are also amazingly unorganized. C'est la vie. My MTGO sn is AkromasEXbf and my lawyer has given me Protection from Red and White.

Is Axebane Guardian really that good?

I cringed when you chose vassal spirit over blustersquall second pick. Fog+ Unblockability just swings games so hard. That said, you managed to draft a pretty awesome UW Skies deck! Stealer + UW Guildmage that third round... wow.

Survey the Wreckage is nowhere near as effective as Destroy the Evidence, which could see fringe play vs 4c or 5c decks to color screw them. You did a very clutch job of playing Rakdos splashing blue. That said, it always kind of urks me when people enter a tournament knowing they will have to leave before it is over, beat a bunch of people, and then drop. You could have easily taken the whole thing with your draft pool. It's a shame you did not see it through.

  • posted a message on Building my deck right now .. 15 minutes remaining.. what do you think is the best...
UW or WG either work with this pool so it comes down to preference. You could even go Bant Goodstuff. Either way, run Transguild Promenade and Chromatic Lantern to splash Mizzium Mortars. Am I maniac? Perhaps. Think about it though: if you have the lantern out, you could one-sided board sweep. You don't need to even splash a mountain since Promenade + Lantern means you have two red sources for a 1 red card splash, and just casting it off the promenade to kill one dude is still pretty great.

Also, I would like to argue that M1X editions are terrible to draft for three reasons:

Fewer keywords/interactions: Since M13 and other editions have fewer keywords and combos, drafting said sets tests your skill far less and often comes down to luck

Less Value Density: Yes there are 5 planeswalkers in each of these sets but most are or will become reprints, crashing the value. Seriously, what in M13 is worth money? Now, look at AVR x3. See what I mean?

Killa in Vanilla: Like your MTG to be mostly vanilla cards? Didn't think so. M13 has fewer amazing card interactions than Inn Block/AVR/RTR

Only 1 year in Standard: While most sets have 16-24 months in Standard editions have about 15 months in standard. That is lower than third sets of the blocks do. In fact, you should treat them as the fourth set in the block. 4th set anyone, yech X_X

M13 has very few good cards in it: Do you like playing Green or White? If you don't, odds are M13 was a huge disappointment. Green got Rancor and Thragtusk, White got Ajani (who is arguably pretty bad but whatev) and Sublime Archangel, Red got pooped on but also got Thundermaw Hellkite. Meanwhile, Blue and Black pretty much got the shaft. I mean, yea Black got back duress, sign in blood, vampire nighthawk, and vampire nocturnus... but Blue... yea Talrand is cool, but the lack of Mana Leak and Ponder replacements left a gaping hole. More annoyingly we lost incinerate's anti regen clause right before the printing of Lotleth Troll. Good on you, WOTC. So yea, M13 is a bad set...

I would personally suggest that you stop drafting on MTGO and switch to sealed whenever you do not feel like you've cracked the format. As of now, 4 pack sealeds= the best kept secret for MTGO collection growth/infiniting. Why is sealed superior to draft in an economic standpoint?

    Draft: 2 tickets + 3 packs
    4 Pack Sealed: 4 Packs

Nix tix every pod? Seems good. However, now consider that many packs are less than 4 tix. That means that for less than 2 tix, you are getting an extra pack to start from per event. Now, let's look at the prize pools

    Drafts
    Single Elim
    4-3-2-2
    8-4
    Swiss: 3-2-2-2-1-1-1

    Sealed
    Swiss: 5-3-3-3-1-1-1

See something interesting? 4 pack sealed not only gives you more starting product for only slightly more money, it also gives better prizes than 4-3-2-2. Oh, and you never have to worry about being forced to raredraft to make tickets back. With 30 tickets and 4 avr packs, I was able to play 4 pack sealed about 10 times without running out of tickets. If I resold the two bonfires and one restoration angel I pulled, I would still be playing 4 pack sealed with the same set of tickets.

If you try 4 pack sealed and go 2-1 and decide you don't like it, your prize is 3 packs that you can go draft with. Also, you essentially opened 4 packs for 4 ticks or less. Would you pay 4 ticks for 4 packs? I know I would!

  • posted a message on Will Snapcaster still be as devastating in Standard?
Snapcaster Mage lost Mana Leak and the color hoser utility spells from M12 didnt come over to M13. That said, do you know why they printed all of that Snappy hate? Because, the lil bloke is still gonna dominate a lot of the format. Between the charms, thought scour, powerful new removal, and redirect (which is usually a 2-for-1 or more in the case of Bonfire), Snappy is still fully loaded. YEEEEEEAAAHHH!

Silklash Spider is officially back. While a late game fix, it can be Green Sun Zenith'ed. However, is it better at hosing flyers than Sigarda or Acid Web Spider? What other cards hose the Delver matchup?

  • posted a message on Phyrexian Mana and Personal Sanctuary? How does this work?
Loss of life, paying life, and being dealt damage are all different things. When you pay phyrexian mana in life, you are not taking damage. Therefore, personal sanctuary wont help you at all. It will let you slagstorm players without hurting yourself tho.
