October is too busy for me to reliably judge or play, sorry.

Along the same bend as the "Can we make a round three card based of a round 2 card that uses our round 1 card", can we make a round 3 card that is based of a round 2 card that shares the same ability as our round 2 card? (I.e. I base mine off of Gerrard's Mom's card)

Both Krynthe and Gerard's Mom took things in a direction opposite Nacreous Predator.

If I were to make a card based off of krynthe's submission for example, would it be fine for it to be a color other then black or white?

    Quote from Oppo28

This is more for my own curiosity, but I saw that krynthe got a perfect score with a card similar to my original round 2 submission, which I changed due to my thought of it not being enough of a vertical cycle with the original:

    Quote from Kenaron
For example, anyone picking krynthe's round 2 card would have to an unnecessarily hard time making a cycle so I suggest strongly people avoid it.

Man, I feel like the center of attention.

In any case, I agree with Falk on loose and tight cycles, but there should at least be some thematic similarities (i.e. the Lumithread cycle) as well as expansion on the earlier rarities (i.e. the Bloodfire cycle). They need not be as tight as "the common gives +1/+1", "the uncommon gives +2/+2", and "the rare gives +3/+3" because that's boring to design. But also they need not be as loose as Paperfin Rascal and Titan's Revenge, which have no connection at all outside of Clash.

I have to disagree with Kenaron on my card not being in cycle. Sure, it's not black, but it maintains the Iridescent ability and expands on the common's evasion ability through protection. Protection offers both an evasion option as well as a stronger defense and a way to shrug off spells, whereas intimidate is a purely offensive ability. I would not have been justified in giving a black critter protection from all colors, because black doesn't get that, so I made it white.

Out of curiousity, would you have DQed me if I have given him a cost of BB? How many points would you have knocked off for "protection from all colors" being out of color?

I think he was referring to the vertical part. Mind you, I suppose the only hard-fast rule about a vertical cycle is that it is spread across multiple rarity levels.

Yeah, I figured the only steadfast rule was "gets more powerful across rarities while retaining an ability". Shocked I'm just going by the wiki, here.

    Quote from Kenaron
I'm also a little surprised here too, but it's not my place to tell other judges how to do their job. I would've DQ'ed krynthe for sure for being out of cycle.

Hm, I guess I'll have to be a bit more careful next round, then. I would argue that my round 2 card is more powerful than Pseudo's round 1, thus satisfying the requirement. I also would argue that it stays in theme, albeit more loosely than, say, a 3/2 Nonac Rogue with Iridescent and Intimidate. (I mean, intimidate and protection are both evasion abilities.) In any case, thanks for the enlightenment. Wink

    Cheers!

I'm curious as to why you think it wasn't in cycle. Are you thinking more of a tight cycle like that of Bloodfire Dwarf, I guess? I think there's a bit more leeway to be had in a loose cycle, such as that with Lumithread Field.

Wow, perfect card, eh? Glad you liked it and thanks. Cool

I was a tad worried about the similarity to Knight of Dawn, but I felt the iridescent ability is too good to not go on a Knight like this.

Keep up the good work on running Sept. I look forward to round 3.

so you're complaining that noone will play control because aggro will be better, and then proceed to shot down anti-creature card because people will be playing control? make up your mind and stop complaining for the sake of complaining.

This combo player hates both heavy control and aggro, sorry.:D

Also, complaining is what I do best.

Spell pierce. Great, just what we need. More incentive to play critter decks. Facepalm

At least there's anti-critter o-ring... oh wait... it gets countered. Mad

Prompted by Sven's assessment of the usability of round 1 cards, I took the list of everyone playing in this round. I'm going down the list, taking their round 1 card, and making a quick design that fits this round. So far I've made three cards, and two of them I think are pretty cool; viable design ideas at a minimum. So I'm a little skeptical of the claim of limited options. (And yes, I'll be happy to share them after the round is clsoed.)

I'll be curious to see what you did with Eclipse. Cool

I have some questions about the judging in mcc sept. round 1.

I got some minor points taken off for having a non perfect card render, so my polish score wasn't perfect. However, other people got perfect polish even though they had no render at all. Is it advantageous just to not use a render at all?

Also, I got a 3/6 for card balance even though the reasoning says that the card could be good but not too good. How intricate is the balance-determining process?

Note, this isn't a complaint, I squeezed my way into the next round anyway. I'm just trying to figure out the consistency problems (if any) and to understand how the judging works better.

It is if you can make a card that doesn't need a picture to be flavourful.

This. Some judges are a little more open ended, I judge mostly on grammar and formatting when comes to polish. While I primarily judge the text card, if there is a glaring issue on the render (i.e. lack of p/t line, cramped rules box, grammar/wording issues that are not in the text version, wrongly colored frame, or mismatching rarity), I'll dock you for it. I start you at the 3 full points and work my way down from there.

Also, while you're all right about stupid MWS's reminder text for kicker screwing me over, I don't lose points for not saying kicked because that isn't the official wording yet Krynthe. When Zendikar comes out, that will be the wording, but for now, It's correct.

Run a search on gatherer and you'll find 73 examples of the current oracle wording for "kicked". For now, it's wrong. Fortunately for you, though, that wording went in on the 3rd, after your card was due but before I started judging. For then, it was correct. I apologize for not considering that your wording was correct prior to the 3rd.

I'll throw a half a point back your way because of the bad timing on the oracle change, but those wordings were official as of Friday. "These wordings are considered the official wordings of the cards, and accurately reflect their functions."

    August Final judgings are up.

I'm going out for drinks tonight and, as it's a holiday weekend, won't be logging on for the rest of the weekend. If you have a major issue, take it up with the Hammer, I won't be able to answer PMs.

Okay, I lied, I can't resist checking in. PM me with any issues, if they are major.
