Worldwake also had the unfortunate spot as being the last set in a fairly unpopular limited format that was followed up by an extremely popular limited format.

Not a whole lot of Worldwake was opened, is what I'm saying.

Thinking fetch lands would go a long way in fixing format imbalance doesn't help your case either, like at all.

This is what we're talking about. You gave no reason and no context. So i'll do it for you.

What will banning fetch's do in Modern? More shocks and Sunpetal Grove lands. 3+ color decks will be less consistent. Shadow of Doubt for Modern becomes unplayable and Stifle in legacy becomes a lot worse and most definitely suffers a price drop.

So I honestly ask you and any of you who have brought this up, since I find it absolutely ridiculous when there are MUCH and I mean MUCH more important and pressing ban candidates than fetch lands; WHY fetch lands?

As I've stated before with Preordain/Ponder lowering consistency does not make a format better. It just makes it more random, frustrating & clunky.

The modern era of Magic has be characterised by decks that don't have any problems with mana, to the point where they can just run any colour they feel like with no consequences. Even in legacy, which has it's fair share of wastelands and other things to punish you for your "greedy" manabase, three colour decks are the rule, not the exception. And when you translate the exact same manabase to Modern, except now you don't have the hate, you get a format where there is no downside to running more colours.

(Maybe this is a reason to add wasteland et al. to Modern, but I don't see it doing enough, because it still doesn't in Legacy)

So you get a format where the colour of spells you play doesn't matter. Every two colour deck gets better when you add a third colour. There's no reason not to play green in your red/black deck for tarmogoyf and deathrite shaman and abrupt decay and oops you made a Jund deck and all you did was take all the good cards in three colours and jam them together. This is a problem if you want a format to be full of decks instead of colours.

(On a side note, this is why decks get boring names these days, because they aren't built of synergy around a particular set of components, but around the best cards in each colour)

And fetchlands are absolutely the cause of it all. A single fetchland represents any of your colours, and it comes into play untapped. The last time Standard had a manabase even close to that good we had people playing Cloudthresher and Cryptic Command in the same deck as Cruel Ultimatum, and everyone complained that it was too easy then. Why do we allow that kind of deck in any of our formats?

I don't think that the fetchlands represent a threat to the life of the format, and I'm sure they will never be banned ever and people will keep playing Modern and Legacy and loving them. But I think they are too powerful and allow for too much consistency for Magic, even though we've adjusted to their existence and moved on (and it's pretty much useless to speculate what Magic would be like if they hadn't been printed)

    It's not really about imbalance.
(Last sidenote, the one-two punch of fetchland+shockland is why aggro is so good in Modern. Player's can be expected to start with at least three less life than they should. As a longtime aggro player, it's so much easier to do 17 damage than 20. If we banned the fetchlands, aggro would be a smaller contender in Modern and control would see a rising popularity)

Banning the fetches in Modern (and Legacy sure) would go a long way in fixing most of the problems the eternal formats have.

By the way guys, saying the other sides arguement is nothing but "hurr durr" doesnt help your case any. Like at all.

That being said, Elspeth, Knight Errant is the best planeswalker for limited, hands down.

It's probably my Book promo Jace Beleren or my Japanese Jace, the Mindsculptor. I'm actually not sure how much the JtMS is worth, I've never been able to find pricing for a japanese one.

Rah rah my format is the best your format is the worst.

Legacy will go the way of vintage. It's inevitable. Now, it's not going to happen for a long while, but it will happen eventually.

This is actually a better play than just showing your opponent the Aetherize.
If someone just laid out their combat trick on the table against me, I'd be far more worried about why he would choose to show it to me. By making it look like a mistake, you're not making him think you're trying to double-bluff him. Good job.

Theres a reason they give special awards in certain fields to just women. Because historically these fields are male dominated and showcasing women who do well in "male" fields helps encourage other women who may have been put off to enter those fields.

Magic is one of those fields that is not only male dominated, but actively hostile to women sometimes. So its nice to recognize women who do well.

Don't worry, its not going to make you look less manly.

agree with that. the banning of seething song makes storm a bit worse, and the only difference is that storm wins a turn later Wink

That's the point. They didn't want to get rid of storm. They wanted to slow it down. Banning Seething Song is the best way to actually do that.

Yeah, it hurts other fairer decks, but so does every ban. I can't build a rogue deck because Bitterblosom is banned, but that shouldn't be taken into account with the ban.

  • posted a message on Why is red the only color that's allowed to be viable by itself?
Because red doesn't have a lot of options for it other than the "red deck", and that's always the best when it's consistent and it achieves that by being mono-coloured.

Other colours have more flexibility in what they can do, so they can be a part of archetypes other than the "colour deck", and they can play other colours to compliment the archetype.

Red doesn't have that kind of flexibility unfortunately, so when there isn't a red deck that's good, it tends to be under-represented.

They have been slowly weeding out the interactivity of the game because they think thats what the players want.

"Players hate seeing their stuff countered!"

    Okay we'll weed out countermagic!

"Players don't like seeing their creatures die!"

Okay regenerate ALL the things, and Hexproof everything else!

I'm very confused on how banning Seething Song is getting rid of interactivity.

Instead of banning cards, Wizards should just print cards like

    1
    Instant
Counter target Bloodbraid Elf and Cascade ability you don't control. If you do, draw three cards.

And that would keep Bloodbraid Elf out of the format. Just do that for every "banned card" and you're golden.

I think people are being unrealistic about their expectations for modern. The format was born with an extensive banlist and since day one they haven't been shy to ban things that are popular and dominant, I personally wasn't expecting to see Bloodbraid banned, and it sucks because I really liked to Cascade it into Stone Rain, but oh well.

They've been clear about what they want from the format and they've also been clear that they will get rid of anything no matter how popular to stay true to what they want from the format.

Ivy lane denizon was insane. It put counters on things that don't get them (like the drakewing krasis) and helps evolve creatures when they get to big. I one most of my games with 4/2 drakes, but it was the denizen that did the work there.

(I managed to get two of them and Fathom Mage at the same time. So sick)
