i have 1 borderland ranger, 4 harrow, and 4 rampant growth as my ramp in my jund ramp deck. I know most ramp decks use 7-8 ramp cards, but this one borderland ranger seems to do okay as long as i can play it early. it's also good late game with rampaging baloths.
however, im wondering if i should just get rid of the one boderland ranger and have 25 lands instead of 24.
whats better borderland ranger or a land?
pros of ranger:
is a creature, so it can block
gets a land in my hand, and shortens the deck by 1 card
cons:
costs mana to play, while a land costs no mana and will increase my land count (thus giving me a better chance to have good starting hands)
--
currently i only have 17 creatures* (ranger included) in my deck
*--2 garruk (i count these as creatures in my deck since they make creatures, even though they are planeswalkers)
With so much Ramp, fetches, etc being used Why doesnt Anyone use Lavaball trap?
One Card for 5 mana to destroy 2 lands and sweep the board, probably
Even if it kills your creatures, who cares, you destroy 2 of their lands!
And someone needs to give desecrated earth some love!
i considered both lavaball trap and desecrated earth, but i really dont want my broodmates dying from lavaball, making lavaball situational. by the time i have the mana to hardcast it i usually have a broomate out. if i can get the 3RR cost off itd be awesome. ill have it in my sideboard i guess.
desecrated earth is good, but i like mold shambler more.
for people who hate desecrated earth: a discard for 2 mana plus a stone rain isnt that bad.
anyone think of putting bloodchief ascension into a jund ramp deck with lavalanche? wipe their board, deal damage to then, and then hurt them again with the ascensions ability because you wiped their board.
example: lavalanche them for 4, they have 4 creatures with toughness 4 or less. they take 4 damage, their creatures die, and then with a charged ascension they take 16. 20 damage - one turn.
and instead of draw, cant you just use diabolic tutor to get a guarantee ascension?
heres my idea of red black version of "bloodchief hurt"
the lavalanches can simply be replaced with earthquakes, which would probably be better in the jund one. if you wipe them twice (one volcanic fallout, one earthquake), with both wipes on a full charges ascension, you should win.
Anything that would make the player put card(s) in his graveyard will cause him to lose life and you gain life. That includes casting of instants and sorceries...
what colors do you run? i would think red/blue/black would be best for this.
i want this to be a jund ramp deck that can side board in discard or control or sweep to be able to deal with most aggro and control decks. FYI: this is not a "pro" deck, mainly casual and FNM.
this is what i think i should do, feel free to criticize
i have multiples of some of these cards.... for example i have 4 lavalanche, etc. but dont know what should be in my main and what should be in my side? should lavalanches be in the main or the ultimatums?
There are a lot of 1 - ofs and 2 -ofs because of the price of the cards. Since i can afford one garruk , ill have one garruk , the same with kitchen finks, etc.
Anyways this is a jund ramp deck and focuses on ramping to get threats (lavalanche, ultimatum, broodmate) out fast.
i also want to fit in cloudthresher somehow
i would side in the violent ultimatums and switch out the lavalanches when im facing big creatures (ex. a mycoloth deck). the lavalanches would be used for aggro , and i dont have to worry about burrenton forge-tender , no one uses that in my playgroup... we use mostly alara set and some lorwyn.
i havent tested mind shatter or liliana vess , though i want to try them. i also have a chandra and dont know if it has a place in this deck or not. jund charm would be sided in against aggro
2. i declare topan ascetic as the blocker of hill giant
3. can i tap my untapped creatures after declaring topan ascetic as the blocker to pump topan ascetic via its ability? Also, can i tap topan ascetic to pump itself after declaring it as a blocker, before damage is dealt?
however, im wondering if i should just get rid of the one boderland ranger and have 25 lands instead of 24.

if it helps - the strategy of my deck is to survive until i can violent ultimatum and win by card advantage -- ex. sprouting thrinax broodmate dragon. and this is a semi - budget deck.
2. how can i know when/what set or sets will rotate out when another set rotates in?
EDIT: another question:
3. are some cards reprinted in every core set? is there a list for these cards? I hope rampant growth is reprinted every set.

the strategy for mine is to survive until i can wipe out their main color by destroying lands and then finishing them
example: lavalanche them for 4, they have 4 creatures with toughness 4 or less. they take 4 damage, their creatures die, and then with a charged ascension they take 16. 20 damage - one turn.
and instead of draw, cant you just use diabolic tutor to get a guarantee ascension?
heres my idea of red black version of "bloodchief hurt"
4 bloodchief ascension
4 diabolic tutor
4 sign in blood
4 volcanic fallout
4 earthquake
3 lightning bolt
heres my idea for jund ramp lavalanche version
4 sprouting thrinax

3 borderland ranger / birds of paradise
4 bloodchief ascension
4 diabolic tutor
4 harrow
2 khalni heart expedition
1 rampant growth
4 volcanic fallout
3 lightning bolt
4 lavalanche

what colors do you run? i would think red/blue/black would be best for this.
2nd ability of ascension + archive trap = win.
red for getting the counters on the ascension
would its second ability trigger with mill cards? ex. mind funeral, would they lose 2 life for each card?
this is what i think i should do, feel free to criticize
i have multiples of some of these cards.... for example i have 4 lavalanche, etc. but dont know what should be in my main and what should be in my side? should lavalanches be in the main or the ultimatums?
i also have torrent of souls

3 lavalanche
2 terror
1 eyeblight's ending

so how can i make my deck better?
it is now my turn and he wants to activate the tap ability.
does his creature still have summoning sickness or can he activate the ability?
giltspire avenger
rhox war monk
i control topan ascetic and two untapped creatures
1. my opponent attacks me with hill giant
2. i declare topan ascetic as the blocker of hill giant
3. can i tap my untapped creatures after declaring topan ascetic as the blocker to pump topan ascetic via its ability? Also, can i tap topan ascetic to pump itself after declaring it as a blocker, before damage is dealt?
