How does this make sense? Won't the software either not work, because it's not written for it, or it will run slowly?

Generally, slowly, to the point of being unusable. Imagine trying to run Windows Vista on a Pentium 4 with 1 GB of RAM. It might run, but it will sputter and spin frequently on all the memory-intensive stuff that OS does. Now, Windows 7 came along and they fixed much of the abomination that was Vista in this department and so 7 might run okay on that Pentium, but again slowly (as in, lots of wait time when you open programs, etc). Not unusable, per se, but a poor user experience. If your company is based on delivering a certain kind of user experience, you would not recommend, for example, putting Windows 7 on that computer.

And someone in this thread (I believe it was Senori) claimed that Apple keeps all it's products up-to-date...which is clearly false for both the iPod Touch and iPhone. There are versions of those two devices that Apple refuses to update any further, forcing anyone using those devices to upgrade to newer Apple products.

No one is forcing any consumer to upgrade any of their devices. Good grief.

I'm not even sure what you're expecting here, that every device is update-able in perpetuity? As far as I can find, Apple hasn't left anyone under contract with one of their phones without OS updates and support, and I think they have kept all their phones updated to the (at the time) current iOS for like three years each. Three years of software updates seems pretty good. My Droid had one. Frown

To date, Apple has not cut off updates to any phone that is still under contract. The iPhone 3GS, released in 2009, is running the same operating system--iOS 5--as the flagship iPhone, and at least iOS 6 will be released for it, if not 7. Compare this to the 3GS's contemporary the Nexus One, which has not had an update in a fair while.

Oh man, this drove me nuts when I had the original Droid. That thing was only on the most current Android version for like two months or something. If I recall correctly, it didn't even come with the latest version when I got it. I think it was at least two versions behind before my contract even ran out.

The other part I hated wasn't Google's problem, but lousy Verizon wasn't sending out the updates quickly even for the one or two I *could* get. It was stock Android. I don't know why there wasn't (I don't know if there is now, I don't use Android anymore as I really disliked that phone) a way for me to connect to my computer, un-jailbroken, and download straight from Google the update. I couldn't find one if it existed. That would have been nice.

Sorry this took me so long to get around to!

I started preparing by taking a full-length practice test in a realistic setting (quiet, timed, etc.), then I scored myself and saw where I was strong and where I needed work. For example, let's say that I made 100% on orgo, 75% on analytical, 60% on inorganic, and 40% on p-chem. Then I made a study plan based on that, devoting the largest chunk of time to my problem areas. I also made sure to switch things up so that nothing got "stale"; if I was doing a month of p-chem, then I'd take a break every other week to read inorganic, for example.

The test is designed so that you don't "need" a calculator, so the questions from p-chem tend to be more conceptual in nature. So I would be "familiar" with things like the Redlich-Kwong and Virial equations, but I wouldn't spend time memorizing coefficient or practicing equations. In general if there's an equation-based question, there's some assumption or simplification they want you to notice.

As for study materials, I just used my textbooks from the corresponding courses. Over the years I've found that reading aloud to myself is particularly handy for the more difficult concepts.

On test day, make sure you get plenty of sleep and eat a breakfast with lots of protein; too much sugar or simple carbs will spike your blood sugar and you'll get sleepy halfway through. Also, make sure you're comfortable with skipping questions! Like the SAT, wrong answers are penalized, whereas blanks are not counted. What I did was make multiple passes through the test. On my first pass, I only answered the questions that I immediately KNEW for a fact and could mark without thinking. Then I went back through and answered the ones I was familiar with and could figure out, but that required some thinking. You've only got a little more than one minute per question, so don't waste too much time on any one question. They're not linked and they're all weighted equally, so skipping the hard ones is your friend Smile

Hope that was helpful! Let me know if you have any more questions or if I can help any way.

When I took the Chem subject test, I used a practice book (this was in 2006, so I can't remember what it was now) that was particularly awful. The practice test was okay, but there were errors everywhere in the study section. I think I just looked over all my notes again. Did you find that there were questions on topics your undergrad didn't seem to cover? My inorganic class spent very little time on actual reactions (it was lots of group theory), and so there were a bunch of polymer questions I had no idea on. In the end it didn't matter!

Thank you very much for removing the color from those tags. The forum is now more readable.

Yes, agreed. I happily report I also am able to read through the mill quicker than last week. Smile

If the Rumour Mill moderator deems that post actionable, then it doesn't matter if it was made three minutes ago or three days ago. If you feel that you received an infraction in error or that the infraction was otherwise undeserved, you're free to contact the acting staff member and discuss the issue with them. However, I should reiterate that the rules are the rules, and time matters little for their enforcement in an active thread.

Yeah, I agree with this. And I'll add an anecdote.

During my time as a Market Street mod, I generally didn't see a statute of limitations unless of course it was for a rule that was now in place that wasn't before. This may sound overly onerous to the bystander, but in MS consistency is everything. If you let something slide here and there, it both undermines your credibility (especially if you happen to be friendly with the person you didn't enforce the rule on) and makes it harder to justify the very strict posting confines that MS operates under. That subforum deals with specifically with monetary items and as such has always taken a hard stance on rules that might allow for abuse (which include everything from the 24 hour rule that ensures every poster has a fair shake at getting their thread noticed to rules that protect against ripping). You are expected to read and adhere to the MS rules when you post in that forum, and because of the nature of the transactions there, a uniform application of those rules is necessary.

I also agree with Madding about timing. I'd rather have it consistent like that (from offending post, with a little leeway of course - but maybe not a week or two) so that people can't 'hold back' offending posts until it maximizes damage or somesuch. Not saying that people *do* that (I assume they don't), but I'd rather they didn't even have the option!

Thanks! I did indeed see that thread. Smile

It just didn't seem like the correct thread to see about getting an option to turn off all tag coloring. That one seems more for discussing usage of the tags and their colors, and I would, contrary to the intent of that thread, prefer to not have them in use at all (for me at least).

Hi, I just noticed that threads in the rumor mill have obnoxious colors attached to their thread tags. Is there a way for me to just see those in monochrome (i.e. in plain black)? I can't seem to find the disable thread tag color option in my User CP choices, and they are making reading that forum frustrating.

Uh, you guys realize that according to the poll results, 9 staff are for (or for with alterations) and 9 are against. Not exactly sure how 50% is 'staff as a whole'?

How was most of that thread not things being pulled up from the gutter to discredit or personally attack others? From what I remember, the whole thread was basically that.

But really, you guys seem to hate this forum, and the staff. Why not just move your little club that "isn't really a big part of the forums" (that is a paraphrase but you get what i mean) to somewhere else? It's not like, in 2012, it's hard to be a member of two different forums.

This is easily the most ill-informed post in this entire thread. You've clearly not spent enough time on these forums, so I'll say that you do a disservice to everyone in your new community when you paint with such a large, inaccurate brush. I am proudly a member of the gutter, and in recent past have been proudly a member of the staff. I do not use offensive language, nor swear, and still enjoy these forums. I DO NOT fit the caricature you're painting, and it bothers me that you would try to paint it onto everyone.

That being said, this site has no reason to do what you or the gutter members want it to do. It is privately run, if it decides that it doesn't want that kind of behavior on its site, then it doesn't have to allow this kind of behavior on its site.

Many of the gutter members want MTGS to be a continually improving, transparent, and quality forum. It might be why a half dozen gutter members have been on staff in the last six months. But if this site has no reason to do what gutter members want.......

The Mafia subforum is a place to play a game. The gutter is a place to go flame people out of sight. There is a big difference here.

The difference, of course, being only one of your statements is true. Teach

I don't recall experiencing the latter. Maybe it happened a long time ago.

We cannot not overlook the danger that the Gutter poses to people in real life. While there is no way to quantify the impact this has on a user, by allowing it a place to exist, the staff feel responsible for it.

What? Danger the gutter poses to people in real life. Seriously? That is the singularly dumbest statement, possibly ever, in regards to the gutter. The only actual danger posed to people in real life to come from these forums (not including dangers people pose to *themselves*) involved a staff member.

But thanks for the laugh, champ.

Yep, Market Street has been handling them as they come up.
