There are a few edh spikes in my playgroup(me being one of them), and it doesnt help to get newer players into it, although playing with and against tuned edh decks is(in my opinion) the most fun I've had with edh.
Fauna Shaman + Quillspike + Devoted Druid in your GY with a necrotic ooze in play, infinite green mana, go find oona, queen of the fae, and a birds of paradise for the black/blue mana. Enjoy milling everyone and getting a lot of faeries in the process. Doesn't really go with rings but it is a fun combo for those colors.
More on topic, something as simple as fetch lands benefit from rings.
Went 4-0 at my local fnm running grixis.
round 1 - RG aggro, the guy was new to magic. 2-0
round 2 - UG mana denial deck which had no way to deal with Sphinx. 2-1
round 3 - RW planeswalker control, game 1 he mulls to 4, game 2 is an easy win with 3 negate and 4 needle from the SB. 2-0
round 4 - UW control, not much happens game 1, eventually resolve a cruel and race his sphinx with 2 tar pits and 2 LB, tar pits help quite a bit, game 2 pithing needle shuts down his colonnades and I eventually stick a Sorin and Sphinx and draw a 2nd cruel. 2-0
I'll post my decklist later when I've had more sleep.
You may want to consider Vedalken Æthermage as I usually find the only way to win with Niv mizzet is under the protection of an EoT Teferi. Also if you are playing in games with lots of people Reiterate + Inner Fire + Spiraling Embers is good for finishing everyone off when you have drawn your deck.
have you considered stoneforge mystic and Umezawa's Jitte. I would definitely make room for Luminarch Ascension in multiplayer it does draw a lot of hate, but usually 1 wrath or some single target removal gets it active easily, you could possibly cut buried alive for it.
