I got interested in a deck presented by MTGGoldfish. I think the combo with Ral, Storm Conduit with Expansion // Explosion or/and Doublecast has already circulated, and it's a hit or miss as the meta is waaay loopy and kinda versatile right now. I wish to try my hand at this but unfortunately I can't seem to acquire a fourth copy of Expansion//Explosion. By some funny circumstance I got an extra copy of Doublecast, so I thought maybe the loss of one could be compensated by the acquisition of the other. I also don't have Search for Azcanta, but I think I've found other means. I've put my decklist below. Comments are welcome
- There's a Chart a Course on my graveyard, and a Dreadhorde Arcanist on the battlefield.
- I pumped my DArcanist (let's say with a Giant Growth) and declare an attack.
- Given the DArcanist's power I can legitimately cast CaCourse from my graveyard.
Here's the tricky part, do I get to just draw two cards since basically I've already attacked (or in the act of attacking)? or do I still get to discard a card, assuming that CaCourse was intended to be cast during the second main phase (after I have finished the act of attacking)?
Let's say I have a Delver of Secrets in play. During my upkeep I look at the top card, only to see a Grizzly Bear (or any non-instant, non-sorcery card). So it can't flip.
I happen to have a Jayemdae Tome ready. Can I use its ability (after the first act of peeking) to get the card on top pre-Draw Phase (in this case the Grizzly Bear) and look at the next top card of my library just to strengthen the chance of flipping my Delver?
Or let's say I have an Opt. Can I use it an instant speed to draw/scry the unwanted card and look at the next card on top of my library?
I have a full-clip of Soul-Scar Mage and I think I'll give it a spin. I chose Viashino Pyromancer because it's basically a Shock with a 2/1 body -- meaning it's immediately used as it is cast (it feels like "snapbolting" a Shock).
What I doubt about SSMage is that it's dependent on other cards for it to be fully appreciated (prowess and non-combat damage). I was, however, really thinking hard on including it on my first draft. Its other contestant is actually Siren Stormtamer.
So I discovered the current trend of UR Tempo via wizard tribal (made popular by Jeff Hoogland) and I'm interested in building one. I was able to acquire some of the pieces since they're still affordable -- except for some: Snapcaster Mage, most fetches, and Mutavault.
I did a little tinkering and I came up with this current decklist:
Now, Mission Briefing is obviously the substitute card for Snapcaster Mage here but my gutfeel says to add some more cheap wizards to give discount to Wizard's Lightning hence the Viashino Pyromancer. I was thinking if Ghitu Lavarunner as another alternative for the Pyromancer. My wife also suggested Noggle Hedge-Mage which, I think, could be a fun alternative.
While I'm not an avid Modern player at all, it seems that Mission Briefing would be a good fit for the deck. Its Surveil 2 seems to be useful in pushing past potential land clumps while also giving you an additional Snappy effect. The double blue shouldn't be too much of a problem in this deck and being able to have more functional copies of the various Bolt effects run in the maindeck while also being able to trigger Prowess with the Briefing seems really strong.
Mission Briefing works well in my Delver deck. Since I don't have the cold cash to buy me a fullclip of Snapcaster Mage, I find this as a reasonable substitute. It definitely saves you from any dead draw next turn (or when you cantrip), and it feeds Bedlam Reveler. I also surveil-discard Risk Factor as I can just jump-start it on a later turn.
I haven't tested Mission Briefing in my UR Aggro Prowess (with Adeliz, the Cinder Wind and her wizard & monk friends), but now that you mentioned it, I will definitely try it out. Thanks!
So we were talking about the Lazav, the Multifarious last night and there was this mild debate and confusion regarding his ability.
Just a quick question: is it possible for him to 'copy' multiple (and varying) creatures from the graveyard in one turn? Example, if the player has a lotta mana, can he copy Shivan Dragon and Serra Angel during the same main phase and acquire both their abilities at the same time (vigilance, flying, pump...)? If this is the case, what will be his power and toughness?

So I got a new toy called Dreadhorde Arcanist and I wish to clarify how it interacts with Chart a Course. Here's the scenario:
- There's a Chart a Course on my graveyard, and a Dreadhorde Arcanist on the battlefield.
- I pumped my DArcanist (let's say with a Giant Growth) and declare an attack.
- Given the DArcanist's power I can legitimately cast CaCourse from my graveyard.

Great! Thanks for the clarification and advice! Almost taught someone a wrong move.

And yeah, I think I might include Vapor Snag for the tempo, and maybe consider replacing Mana Leak with Wizard's Retort.
What I like about Mission Briefing is that it almost unintentionally "feeds" Grim Lavamancer with surveil. And it sculpts your next draw.
I am intrigued with Light Up the Stage. I'll try to include two -- if not a full-clip.

Creatures
4 Delver of Secrets
4 Nimble Obstructionist

2 Grim Lavamancer
Spells
4 Mission Briefing
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Opt
4 Mana Leak
4 Wizard's Lightning
3 Remand
2 Burst Lightning
2 Risk Factor
Lands (20 in all) are composed of Steam Vents, Sulfur Falls, Shivan Reef, some Polluted Delta and Flooded Strand. I can't seem to find a Spirebluff Canal.

Your thoughts?

My opponent casts Banisher Priest. He chooses to exile my Grizzly Bears (from the BPriest's ability).
On my turn I cast my Merfolk Trickster to target the Banisher Priest -- making the latter lose its ability.
Do I get my bears back since the Merfolk Trickster has nullified the Banisher Priest's ability? Or does the exiled creature stay in exile?
If both Naban, Dean of Iteration and Sage of Fables are on my Battlefield, and I cast a Siren Stormtamer -- does the siren get two counters instead of one?
