SCG is running the event so they'll announce a theft precaution as they commonly do. If your stuff gets jacked because you aren't looking, tough. You've been warned.
Secondly, how is it good for them to give away cards that aren't selling and then buy them back? Sure it's goodwill, but the "It's great for SCG cause they're buying back cards they already have that they're not selling."
I assume they're selling on some level which makes it fairly generous (not counting promotional gain obviously), but even if they aren't, rebuying them is definitely a straight hit.
The idea that this is bad for SCG's reputation is a joke. First of all, the cheaters are being caught and banned which is GOOD for SCG. Secondly, they have a tournament every week. People should be thankful cheaters are caught and banned so they can't compete at GP, PT and SCG events.
If you really want to prevent cheating, watch your opponent and help the effort. Don't just blame the TO and stop going to events.
Are you saying that Yawgmoth's Bargain doesn't win you the game the moment you play it? Because if you are, you've never played against Bargain. It might not win you the game that turn, but I promise you're about to win.
Same goes for Hive Mind. I may not win when I play it, but I'll win when I cast Pact of the Titan and pass the turn.
There's also this card called Battle of Wits. It may not be 6 mana, but it's five, and I promise when it hits the table, you win.
He said that they do win the game as soon as they hit. Which is exactly what you just said.
An accompanying statement that sums up the intent would've gone a long way here. "In general, missed triggers that are good for you are just that: missed. Triggers that make you pay life or some other detrimental cost are still mandatory."
Well, it's an inherent problem with the new ruling. Why not just errata all cards to say "may" then?
Because they don't want to errata cards like they used to. They don't like pseudopatching anymore. Players missing triggers already naturally happen all the time. It's easier to tackle it that way than to lean on Oracle too hard.
I have an Essence Warden and a Telepathy out. I can see my opponent has a Hidetsugu's Second Rite in his hand. I need to play a creature in order to attack and win next turn, but I am at 9 life. Under the new rules I can play that creature and "forget" to gain life, and not die to the Second Rite.
Seems dumb and contrary to how the card actually works.
I agree with you. However, considering players could assemble decks that were designed to create this scenario and still not replicate it after 100 games, who cares.
-People who did not read or barely read the rule
-People who give scummy examples of things you can do in a Magic game that you could do before this rule was ever changed
-People who do not understand the rule
-Tragically common panic
If people want to stand by that retroactive means taking away a payment that hasn't been paid yet, that's fine. I get that he won the event he should've never been qualified for and that may be enough for people to say, hey, they owe him money for that.
But don't DARE stand in the corner of the universe for people who are unconvinced he cheated. I went to tournaments. I saw him. I saw him play Magic and I saw he conducts himself in a lot of situations. He is a deceitful person and a rude player. There is no bias. I've never played against him. I've never been bitter about a loss to him or any other conjured bias you can think of.
He cheated. There is evidence of him cheating almost half a dozen times in a short span. And the percentage of matches he played on camera or in a feature article are less than 1% of his matches in those things. If you don't know him, if you haven't been around him, then I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Cheat. Cheat. Cheat.
nice job scg for turning a prize payout into a tax right-off
THAT's what you took away from all this? Tell me, were you born this cynical or did it take a traumatic experience to make it happen? If so, is that same traumatic experience responsible for making you confused with regard to the words "write" and "right?"
I think people are underestimating the level of Alex's sketch. I attended 3 SCG events last year and he was at all of them. When he lost, he pitched a hissy fit. He palled around with loud, obnoxious, rude people and came off as shady regardless of what he was doing. The kid reeks of dishonesty and ridiculousness.
Alex's situation will have ZERO effect on sloppy players and a huge effect on cheaters as they will have to really up their sketchiness to go under the radar.
Ari Lax drew an extra card at GP Atlanta and immediately called a judge.
Gerry T. screwed up his insane manabase and did something wrong and had a lengthy pow-wow with judges afterward to ensure they were both on the same page.
Players screw up ALL THE TIME and no one calls them cheaters because they aren't, they're human beings. Alex Bertoncini was a cheater. A certified fraud. He asked his warnings to be downgraded for god's sake. Who does that but someone who knows they have a continuing pattern of cheating?
Being worried you'll get prizes revoked due to play mistakes because of Alex Bertoncini makes about as much sense as being worried you'll be sent to Guantanamo Bay for having toothpaste on an airplane because of September 11th.
They don't have to point that out. They can simply say they aren't paying him out for X given reason. He was being openly investigated by the DCI and they are invoking his prize rights will do just fine in this case. It carries a lot more weight than "we can change things at our discretion".
It also does what SCG did in the first place by pushing the ugly business of suspending him off on the DCI. Than they can use that as the reason why they aren't paying out.
Pushing it off on the DCI? You're a moron. Should SCG print their own sets and make their own banlists based on their metagames? It's the DCI's job in every other case. Why in the hell should they be the only TO on the planet that gets to decide who can and who can't play based on rules infractions when every other TO is subject to DCI decisions?
Only Magic players could cry foul over a proven cheater having $10,000+ taken away from him and given to a children's charity.
How, in any context of reality, especially near Christmas time, could someone have a problem with--again--a PROVEN degenerate fraud having his tainted prize taken away and given to A CHILDREN'S CHARITY?
My exhalation at SCG's decision is matched only by my disappointment in some of the community's response. There is no gray area. He was a cheater and a fraud.
I rate it a 0 out of 10 because Protean Hydra's art has no background for some reason. It's like the battle is taking place in front of a green screen.

Stop sweating it and just play the game.
