At least in Sealed, it seems *really* hard to have an aggressive deck. A lot of the games go past turn 10 when both players are topdecking, so I could see some decks wanting to draw first. In particular if you have good defensive creatures (1/1 deathtouch, 2/3s, etc.) then it makes a lot of sense. OTOH if you want to be racing then being on the play is better. For example if you have Seeker of the Way or the 4/4 lifelink then it makes a lot of sense to be on the play.
I do agree in general playing first is better. And I agree that you really want to make your 5th land drop on time.
The chance of having your 5th land on time is (ignoring mulligans):
17 land, play: 55%
18 land, play: 62%
17 land, draw: 66%
18 land, draw: 73%

1) Why is Jace $150 on SCG, if it is only played in some legacy decks, while it was unanimously played in standard and was worth far less
2)Why is my Misty rainforest worth $40, if it is a rare from a relatively new set that sold a lot
You see, while some cards have value because of how much they see play vs. disponibility, that is many cases is just not true.

for me, though, the ones that i have always with me are arcane denial (cheap, draws a card) and cryptic command (tap option is awesome)

There's little more demeaning than getting your butt kicked by a bunch of pants.
