I think any ability relating to a specific plane should only be allowed if a character is either from that plane or has spent a significant amount of time on said plane (maybe, one or two quests worth of time).

And for abilities relating to specific locations, I would definitely suggest making actually visiting that location a prerequisite. How can your character have any kind of memory of Boseiju if he's never been there? This has the benefit of making unique places on planes natural gathering sites for walkers to meet one another and develop a larger group of contacts.

Yeah, that makes sense. We probably should allow characters who have visited the location to learn the ability as well.

I thought up a few more over the weekend. I was thinking ahead to the level 6+ talents.

I split up fluff and mechanics this time. Again, card inspiration is linked.

Time Stop: A magical vortex opens up and violently affects spellcasting, sucking all magical energies into it and affecting space and time as a side effect.

    Required Accessible Color(s): Blue
    Cost: 5UU
    Speed: Instant
Effect: Counter all spells and abilities. Time is slowed to a crawl for 30 seconds for everyone except the spellcaster. Everyone affected is aware that they are slowed.
Limit: May only be used X amount of times every 48 hours, where X is 5 less than your level.

Damnation: A deadly vortex opens up and annihilates all conjurations.

Required Accessible Color(s): Black and/or White
Cost: Empty your mana pool. Mana regeneration speed doubles during your next 2 turns.
    Speed: Sorcery
    Effect: Destroy all conjurations.
Limit: May only be used X amount of times every 24 hours, where X is 4 less than your level. Cannot be gained at level 3.

EDIT: Yeah, I am a little slow in this discussion. Shouldn't we have some serious repercussions for trying to cast a huge spell (like 20-point damage spells)? A negative modifier on the attack roll maybe. And if the attack roll fails, you take five points, or maybe empty half your mana pool. Reasoning: mana burn which should be introduced into this game. The planeswalker did not have the ability, experience, or talent to wield the spell and thus attempted to let loose pure, undirected mana which damaged the closest thing to it, the spellcaster.

Oh, right, going to change that now. Thanks.

(I could have sworn it was a common )

Edit: Fixed now. Welkin Tern must surely be a common.

Edit 2: Oops, I meant Tempest Owl. Silly bird cards. That's what I get for working on 3 hours of sleep.

As I was instructed, here is a link to my character. I am interested in helping test the system out in the beta. I am all set and ready to role play. Smile

Actually, I'm fine with having you join the beta. I don't think it'll be too much work for me to have another player or two, especially since silverthorn's back now, so just post your character in the beta discussion thread to confirm that you'd like to be in it.

Sorry, went away for the weekend without internet access. I am definitely still interested. Smile Going to post my character now.

How about these Kamigawa themed talents?

Curtain of Light: Once per battle, if you can access white mana, you may have all unblocked creatures that are attacking you and/or other planeswalkers in close proximity to you become startled by a magical curtain of light (works on unblockable creatures). Startled creatures do not continue with their attack. Cool-down period: 8 hours, or a night of rest.

Memory of Boseiju: You may gain this talent if your character's plane of origin is Kamigawa. Whenever you cast a non-conjuration spell, you may pay an additional 2 life and tap your planeswalker. That spell cannot be countered.

You'll have to wait for the beta to end since I'm not allowing any new players into the beta, but if you're okay with waiting, we'd love to have you join the RPG once it's open to the public.

Yeah, I totally understand. Can't wait. Smile

I'm gonna post a character in the submission thread so I don't forget. I can participate in the beta if need be, but I can see you guys have more than maxed out. I can wait till the beta's done. Smile

. . . it allowed me to play more Skyrim, have more time to dedicate to a social life. . .

Is this not a paradox? :p

It's a shame that epic campaign never caught on. It sounds pretty awesome to me. Frown

@Trusted Wave: I've been toying around with the idea of posting in the Community Cafe for a while now. Maybe I'll give it a try once I finish up with finals week. Muh

Good news: Got my PS3 back from Sony. It's a brand new one, which is a good thing.

However, that means my one-year-old 320 gb PS3 met with an early demise. It was so young. Frown

R.I.P. Little buddy. We hardly knew you. Crying

In other related news, Assassin's Creed: Revelations is holding me over as I wait for The Holiday. My sister outright told me not to get Skyrim when I went to the mall the other day, and refused to answer the simple question, "Why?" Her methods are so subtle, aren't they? :p

Also, I am eagerly awaiting MTG:RPG revival, and keeping tabs on the Planeswalker project. I need to see this system in action. Is anyone else in the same boat?

Well, that settles it. I am getting Skyrim! ...the moment my PS3 gets back from Sony for maintenance. -_- Stupid malfunctioning *grumble grumble grumble*

Oh, and KoolKoal, I haven't heard much about Assassin's Creed: Revelations. I doubt that it will be lacking in quality, but I might be skeptical in purchasing it if the gameplay is too similar to Brotherhood. I mean, more-of-the-same games aren't displeasing to me, but it's competing with Skyrim here (sadly).

May I suggest you head over and take a look at the "Colosseum" section of the forum? Here's a link. You might find a home there.

So common sense will help somewhat with the difficulty spikes then? Or are the mobs of enemies (and similar difficult adversaries) on a quest released upon you ambush-style too often? Keyword being "too often" since a few times would make sense to mix things up.

If it is the former, that sounds like you are being treated as an actual member of the world rather than an unstoppable, untouchable, undying god among men.

If it is the latter, well then, I do like nearly impossible challenges...

Hmm, that nicer tutorial part appeals to me, I am glad the gameplay is smooth, and I do suppose I should concede that difficulty spikes in open world games are to be expected (realistically, one shouldn't be able to complete every single side quests easily I guess). But if it detracts from the fun, that may be a problem.

@Trusted Wave: Thanks for the review! It is very helpful. Smile

@Nai: Is the beauty of the game more than enough to make up for the weird lack of stats?

  • posted a message on Closing down The Gutter
Okay, so I have been following this discussion for a while now. I only knew of the Gutter because of the alleged "Forum Award Rigging" a few years back which, from what I understand, made little sense. But that incident did fire up some members for some reason so the removal of the forum awards made sense. Not the Gutter's fault as far as I know.

I have never been a Gutter member, nor do I think I am mature enough to join. My curiosity makes me want to see what it is like but frankly, it matters little.

What matters is that a section of the forum, which was private because it had to be, was home to a community of people who might not have been on this forum otherwise. It seems this community was doing well internally. Foreign policies with the home country seems to be a little wary, but a few blunders by a few individuals should not warrant the removal of that entire community's home. (Then again, I am never in favor of destroying anything where the sharing of knowledge occurs, regardless of the manner in which it is shared)

Well, the Gutter has been closed. We are waiting a resolution. I do trust that the mods are having crazy amounts of PM conversations about this (well maybe not too crazy). We are all waiting to hear what they have to say. Let's not bash them for taking their time. This issue is delicate. We are all fallible humans. Let them get their thoughts together before their press release.

In the meantime, perhaps a different tactic is in order? Fighting for the unfairness of the actions seems to have been presented to death. I am sure most would agree that this punishment was harsh. Might I suggest* listing some other reasons to reopen the Gutter? I am not as familiar with it as I am sure many of the responders here are.

Or perhaps talk about what it would be like if the moderators do reopen the Gutter? Give them some reassurance that the Gutter can make this event a chance to better the community. Which might be tough since the Gutter as a whole is unknown to the majority of the community. You would have to fight a battle of perception. The better that each of the Gutter's members deals with this situation, the better the perception, the higher the chance of reopening. Even if that percentage is only small, it is something right?

Is my reasoning flawed? Please, I would just like to understand. I am mildly interested in this topic.

*Or support the suggestion, since I cannot claim that I was the first to suggest such a plan.

Sorry for the long-ish post. Also, I wish you all the best of luck.

Well, there's two hours to go till Skyrim comes out here. I won't be able to get it immediately because of poor man's funds, but I am still excited for it anyway. I am interested to hear people's impression of the game. The trailers looked amazing. For those who play it, I am mostly interested in how smooth the gameplay is and if I should worry about "difficulty spikes" that were listed as a con in one of the reviews I read.

Also, is it a sin that I have never played a Bethesda game before?

Also, also, I am back to my seldom-posting self. Life is back to a semi-normal state that allows me some free time.
