Like you said, Im trying a more "Discard Matters" approach since that allows me to interact with other players. I want a "we're all this together so nobody can have a perfect hand" kind of game. What this deck mainly wants to be is an interactive mono black control deck that destroys combo decks. I may have to get a bit more creative.
I'm definitely doing this though
-1 Duress
-1 Sudden Death
+1 Mind Slash
+1 Expedition Map
This looks really great! I love the Devotion synergies you've got going on. Do you feel you're running too many manarocks? You could probably cut 2 or 3 of them and just use Expedition Map to find your cabal coffers and from there it's smooth sailing.
Also, 3 Lilianas? Ever run into problems?
All cool cards for sure. The only reason I don't run the sword is because I prefer the lifegain effect of the warhammer in here as the deck can be hard on my life total sometimes. (And I don't own one haha)
I actually forgot about Urborg. Im dumb
What cards do you feel are week enough to be replaced? I will use grave pact over Attrition it seems
Because all I do is blow up all lands so I'll never get it online : (
This deck has been testing VERY well! I'm starting to think I don't need Anvil of Bogardan or Temple Bell. I actually have sufficient card filtering with my red draw cards and these tend to help the other players. In testing, at least ONE opponent ALWAYS has 6+ cards in hand without my help so these are kind of dangerous to run. Anybody got any alternatives? I'm gonna try Lightning Bolt in place of Anvil for now. Its nice spot removal and could also remove Planeswalkers. I'm also thinking of trying either Banefire or Overmaster.
What do we think about the new commander spoilers? Seems like that new goblin planeswalker would be great here!
if that IS the redwalker in the foreground (with his back to us) i'd guess he is a vampire from innistrad by his appearance(stromkirk or falkenrath)
I really hope not because his abilities would probably be more combat focused. I want a god damn CA walker for red. I hope he/she deals with artifacts in some form.
I'm wondering if maybe Voltaic Key would serve as a better mana rock than say... Fellwar Stone? It can also untap some other non-mana producing artifacts like Temple Bell or Deal Broker
Hey everyone, here is my take on a mono black control list for multiplayer EDH. Basically Im using all the little graveyard recursive creatures that I can think of in conjunction with cards like Necrogen Mists, Bottomless Pit, Unnerve and Syphon Mind to disrupt everyone else's hands. There's lots of ways to stop aggro and combo decks here and slowly grind out a win with big beaters, Bloodchief Ascension or a nice Exsanguinate.
Some words on Ob Nixilis: Ob is deceptively powerful in a control shell. Pooping out flying demons is a lot better than it sounds. Sure his +2 doesn't put you ahead by all that much but the fact that he's a planeswalker makes him hard to remove outside combat damage. They have to get by at LEAST a 5/5 flying and most likely some other fodder creature and all of your removal. In the 7 games I've played so far with this deck, I've never reached his ultimate and never needed to.
In contrast to most people here I think his +2 is his most relevant ability.
You need to consider that with him as your commander you're playing mono black. And that means you play discard, you destroy things... you want to play more of a control match.
Your creatures too often bite the dust with your own Damnation. But he's a plainswalker, so he stays in most cases.
Moreover, his lifegain supports your Phyrexian Arena and Night's Whisper while slowly draining your opponents.
But being slow also means he's no immediate thread, so his chance of staying isn't the worst. And once the board is cleared and maybe one or two playery are already deafeted he can produce you a little demon army.
To evaluate him you have to consider what type of strategy you can play with mono black and he's good in something controllish...
Thanks for the feedback guys! I've decided to do the following with the deck
OUT
-1 Liquimetal Coating: Just too weak without Heretic. Mycosynth Lattice is much better.
-1 Mindclaw Shaman: Like you said Weebo, he's just too inconsistent.
-1 Wheel of Fate: The worst wheel since people can see it coming.
-1 Rummaging Goblin: Deal Broker is way better.
-1 Swiftfoot Boots: Hexproof is useless in my meta. Most players play some form of combo so not that much spot removal in their decks.
-1 Howling Mine: I feel Anvil of Bogardan will do the job a bit better.
-1 Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded: Sad to see this one go but I just need room : (
-1 Sword of War and Peace: The power boost is more significant on Warhammer. Lifelink is much more reliable than SoWaP lifegain ability and Trample assures at least something is dying to Adamaro.
IN
+1 Magus of the Moon: Land denial.
+1 Deal Broker; Looter
+1 Tormenting Voice: Some more draw.
+1 Anvil of Bogardan: Better than Howling Mine for this type of deck.
+1 Karn, Silver Golem: So freaking sweet with Latice! And makes beaters too! He can also be used politically. Thanks for the suggestion Arkhaic!
+1 Torpor Orb: Lots of combo in my meta and this stops some of it. Just plays well here since I have ONE creature that has an ETB effect.
+1 Wake of Destruction: Im gonna try this one out. I would maybe just put Boil instead tbh, but hitting the green ramp decks at the table is nice. This is the only addition I'm kinda iffy on. Most players in my meta play multicolor and different combinations to boot!
+1 Thran Dynamo: I like this better than Worn Powerstone because its not a three drop. And I want Adamaro at 3
What do you guys think? Good moves? I really want to try Hoarding Dragon and Darksteel Forge but I feel that one is too slow and the other too high CmC for it's board impact.
Oh and to answer your question Weebo, yes, Crucible is incredible. It allows me to play the lands that i blew up with my mass LD AND lets me use the lands in my hand as discard fodder.
Hell yeah mono red control. I love Jaya but have recently been playing an Adamaro build. Think you could give it a look over Weebo? I'm curious what you think? (It's got many of the same principles are your list)
Iron Maiden is great in a 4v4 free for all. If I'm not getting my LD as fast as I'd like too then it does a nice job of hurting people while I prepare. Not the best card in the deck but definitely not the worst. Nevyinyrral's Disk is no good here because it destroys artifacts and boy do I need those. Darksteel Forge, while a great card, never seems to affect the board state that much. Sure I've got indestructible lands and stuff with Mycosynth lattice out, but a much more devastating combo is with Vandalblast. Darksteel Forge is just to costly : (
I'm thinking of replacing Wheel of Fate. People just empty their hands before it resolves and get a bunch of new cards. Maybe I'll use Magus of the Moon instead? I'm thinking of going
Sword of War and Peace also kind of sucks here (my meta and just plain suckage) What other nice card could I use instead? it needn't be an equipment. I would use Lightning Greaves but theres isn't much targeted removal in my meta anyway and haste can come from Anger more efficiently. I'm trying Tormenting Voice in it's stead for now. Wondering if I should bother with Ruby Medallion...
So I've been testing and MAN is this deck fun. Since its mono red, you often find yourself doing different things to win (since you cant always achieve the MANA ROCK, ADAMAMARO, LD plan due to lack of card draw and filtering) and that leads to some really fun and creative games. Nobody ever got mad when I completely destroyed all lands : )
That said... the deck needs more LD haha! I've replaced some of the underperformers with cards I feel will better set up my plan!
-1 Ring of Valkas
-1 Detritivore
-1 Worn Powerstone
-1 Phyrexian Revoker
-1 Otherworld Atlas
-1 Into the Core
+1 Tectonic Break
+1 Fellwar Stone
+1 Decree of Annihilation
+1 Mana Vault
+1 Ruination
+1 Dwarven Miner
Im really not digging Godo that much : ( He's kind of weak with no powerful equipments other than the Sword. I may cut him. Not sure for what though. Perhaps something like Stranglehold It is a form of Land Denial since everybody in my playgroup runs fetches. And green ramp. I can't wait to see what's in the mono red commander 2014 deck!
I'm definitely doing this though
-1 Duress
-1 Sudden Death
+1 Mind Slash
+1 Expedition Map

Very, VERY cool commander for mono white. I wonder if this means we'll be getting an alternate art Stoneforge Mystic in this set?

This. I may have found the commander for my second deck. This guy plays well in a few-creature control build. I can see myself running him alongside Bloodghast,Reassembling Skeleton and Nether Traitor. Combine it with some heavy all player discard spells like Liliana of the Veil and Necrogen Mists and you've got yourself a really cool control shell. Homicidal Seclusion ftw.
