Thanks, this is what I was looking for.

As far as why it can do it so often? The guy has 3 separate cards that allow for untapping all creatures during other players untap step.

Lathril, Blade of the Elves has a tap ability. Tap Lathril and 10 more untapped elves is the cost, the effect is you gain 10 life opponents lose 10 life.

What are ways that the effect can be prevented from resolving and what are the specific rules that justify this. Things that have been tried yet the card owner said wouldn't prevent the effect from resolving:

Lathril was destroyed: its ability was activated as a response
Ability was activated: Lathril was destroyed as a response
Lathril was forced to tap by an instant, ability activated as response
Ability activated, Lathril was forced to tap as a response

From my understanding of the stack, there's no way all 4 of these could resolve, I see at most the top two being able to resolve, and maybe the 3rd.

Given that card is his commander, my only viable option is refuse to play against that deck.

Using card tags is mandatory in the Magic Rulings forum. Please check your private messages to learn how to use them. I've added them for this post.
