The End of an Era

It was always a strange rule that I felt never made much sense. Then again, I never understood the roles of planeswalkers considering in the original game, I believe the player themselves are planeswalkers lol.

So, I am almost finished getting my cube together, and using yours as the template. The only change I made, I can't live in a world where Reflecting Pool isn't in my cube. T_T

Sorry Undiscovered Paradise. Maybe when I add the 630 expansion, I'll put ya back. Grin

  • posted a message on Player drafts everytime the same deck
Unfortunately this doesn't have much to do with the player who drafts 5 color control. If your other players are just drafting like it's a normal Limited Format it could be skewing the results.

What I mean by that is many of the cubes here have been built in such a way to mimic each other, what this means is everyone has really gravitated to putting Arc types in the Cube

A similar Dynamic happened when I would draft with my close friends the people who I made the cube for. They would identify strategies and archives they would adapt to Mana curves and we would start to build decks at work quite well around and had a lot of power.

And that translated pretty well when I brought it to a local game shop with only a players.

Then the cube started getting popular and I had to make it bigger and so I ended up getting up to as much as 810 cars. And that was a large pool of players 3 drafting at one time. And I would have people passing aggro cards like 1 cc and 2 CC Agro cards. But I never got anything to top off my decks I never had those really good mid-range cards.

What happened was when I would go to play I had a really weak aggro deck that couldn't finish the job it would come out of the gates laser but I couldn't finish anything and when I lost my first round and I started to go from table to table to see what other people have drafted I noticed that almost everybody else was drafting mid-range Jank. You'd see tables of creatures locked up against each other trying to get through.

and so the next weekend when we had the cube draft I decided I'm going to get 5 color control a chance and that's what I did I drafted my Mana fixing in the first two rounds with a spattering of bombs or counterspells as they came along and then in the third round I picked up big flashy cards removal counterspells things like that.

And I went completely undefeated. It wasn't even a challenge. Because no one else drafting anything to combat my control deck I was playing against to see if slow mid-range decks.

anyway sorry if all that is hard to read I'm talking into my phone as I'm driving to a business meeting. So please excuse the typos and weird grammar I hope the message got through though

Give it haste, drop it down 1 point of damage, but let it hit creatures, and make it 1R?

    Aetherstorm Howler 1R
    Creature - Elemental Hound
    Haste
Whenever Aetherstorm Howler enters the battlefield or attacks, you get E (an energy counter).
Whenever Aetherstorm Howler deals combat damage to a player, you may pay EE. If you do, Aetherstorm Howler deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
    2/1

This seems absurd. Comes down right away and if they have no blockers, hits for 2 and immediately shocks something?

Yeah. That's the point. Did you see the previous card? You guys can't have it both ways. lol Either it sucks or it's good.

But it's not any more under costed than most red spells that can deal 4 damage. You still have to get through a few more time to keep that going. I don't think paying 2 mana for 4 to the face is broken when you have it on a critter.

  • posted a message on How far can you "stretch" a cube (if you get too many players)?
Just add 45 cards for each person you want. I haven't updated my cube since innistrad, and that was when 720 was pretty fringe, but even then there was still enough quality cards. Seeing what has jumped into the 360/540 cubes, there is a rich amount of new content for 720. On top of that, if you needed to, say go to 990 (22 players) the card pools are still going to be good. Let's be realistic here. You all remember the trash cube that was used a that invitational in 2007. It still allowed decks to be made and it had interesting interactions.

With over 15,000 cards in magic, it should not be hard to get 990 great choices to make limited fun for a large group.

There is a big difference between weakening Archetypes vs weakening Limited Deck Power, some of the most interactive games I've seen was a bunch of mid-range jank slinging fists back and forth.

Just something I noticed while making my proxy cube again, what happen to faith's fetters? Has it lost it's shine over the years?

    How about this:

    Gambling Tutor 1R
    Sorcery
Search your library for a card and exile it face down. An opponent guesses it's Name. If that player is right, shuffle it back into your library and draw a card. If that player is wrong, put that card into your hand and shuffle your library.

    Never broken, never card disadvantage

I don't consider it broken, but I do think it's a red demonic tutor 99% of the time. That's a big ask for a player to guess from a very large pool of cards with no mechanic to reveal and guess. (I was trying to apply curse scroll to a card advantage but only in one shot)

Powered vs unpowered really comes down the the drafters. We had apparently three moxes in one pack and four of the seven newer players just passed them up. when they got to myself and the other very experienced person, they got snagged. Their value is only as good as though who understand how to use them.

In a level playing field, I don't find them that game breaking, because in an 8 man draft or larger you really shouldn't see people with multiple of them, and if they do get more than one, the cube is powerful enough to overcome this. -IF- you can draft a good deck.

That card seems unprintable, as it's either disgustingly broken (triple demonic tutor for 1RR?!) or the worst card you could ever cast.

Well, if it were red, which looking back, seems more logical now, isn't that what red does? Huge Effects for big risks? Gamble for example. It's an instant speed demonic tutor. Which yes, if you strictly read it as R = instant demonic tutor that's a bit over the top. (Maybe not in cube or EDH) but in general yes.

    Lets try again.

    Questionable Intent 1RR
    Sorcery
Search your library for three cards, reveal them, and exile them randomly face down. At the end of turn, an opponent chooses a card name and one of the facedown cards. If the opponent is correct they may play one of the exiled cards as though it were in his or her hand with out paying its mana cost. If not, you may put all three cards into your hand.

By I feel like my version wouldn't even be that good, because it's vulnerable and needs setup.

And Upheaval itself doesn't see play outside of cubes, right? Did it broken things in standard?

Actually yes. The best deck of the time was Psychatog which would get to 10 or so mana float it all then Upheaval into Psychatog to win the next turn. It's also banned in EDH which is why it doesn't see play there and not legal in modern.

Legal in Vintage (Type 1) Too Slow
Legal in Legacy (Type 1.5) Too Slow
Legal in Classic (MTGO) Too Slow
    Banned in Commander Yup

    T_T

I didn't really enjoy the 2002/2003 circa standard but watching that specific play was brutal.

It's also not really used at kitchen tables in multiplayer much either because it is honestly a nasty play. In cube though, you know what you are getting into. lol

    Onward!

    Devious Intent 1BB
    Sorcery
Search your library for three cards, reveal them and randomly exile them face down. An opponent names one of the cards. If correct your opponent may cast one of the cards without paying their mana cost. If not correct, put all three exile cards into your hand. Exile Devious Intent.

Not sure, sounds like a case where it could drop to a 2/1 for W and be like most of those 2/1 for W a beater with some gravy added in

    Good with Opposition

Totally, but it's still lacking. Probably needs some keywords.

I start small. How about change creatures to permanents?
