A good way to think of it is less "make people buy set boosters", and more "people are already going to be buying set boosters, so this helps get enough copies in circulation without absolutely flooding the market with them".

Well, sure, but I already don't understand the purpose of set boosters, regardless of The List's interaction with UB cards. My point is that you typically pull something like 6 List cards from a set booster box, and obviously there are tons of cards on the List so pulling a specific one is a low rate. Even if they adjust the drops (which is also kind of annoying if you want non-UB List cards), you're still unlikely to pull a ton. If the point is to make what would otherwise be limited cards more widely available, then this is the bare minimum.

That said, I (1) don't care one way or another if they make the variants widely available or not because the existence of mechanically unique UB cards doesn't bother me and (2) I agree that as far as the way releases are currently structured, I think putting the variants on the List makes the most sense right now.

It doesn't combo. If you mutate Greathorn onto Scute Swarm, all of your copies of Scute Swarm will be tokens named Migratory Greathorn but will also have the ability of Scute Swarm. So you basically just get hella 3/4s instead of hella 1/1s.

I'm not really into TWD or Stranger Things but think it's cool that the crossover stuff exists. Hasbro used to make the ALIEN toys, and that's one that I REALLY want to see. The Dark Tower would be awesome and absolutely fits MtG flavor. Not sure what else I'd be into off the top of my head. But yeah, I say bring it on.

I don't LOVE the print-to-List idea that much, only insofar as it seems to be a forced reason to buy Set Boosters, the existence of which I don't really get. It still seems as sort of an unnecessary product to me. But otherwise I think it's a cool way to ensure we get MtG versions of anything that turns out to be potentially playable, and I don't have a better solution off-hand.

Ok, someone who follows the lore please clarify. I was under the impression that there were students from all sorts of different planes attending Strixhaven? My understand was that maybe the acceptance letter or something allows non-PWs access Arcavios so they can attend Strixhaven. When I saw this card, my first thought was that elephant-bro is from Ravnica and got kicked out of Boros.

So are all the students at Strixhaven natives of Arcavios? If so, where does Strixhaven get all its archive spells? Are there just that many planeswalkers visiting? I demand answers, lol.

This is going to be entirely meta-dependent. I don't usually run into too many Planeswalkers that need to be dealt with at instant speed, so while this is a strict upgrade to something like Disenchant, that's about as far as I'll go with it. If you want additional disenchant effects or you're playing where there's a bunch of Planeswalkers, this is great. But with regard to the cards discussed, this isn't strictly better than any of them, or strictly worse.

    Card seems super underwhelming.

Still holding out for Jin-Gitaxias or Eldrazi.

Could absolutely be wrong but I wonder if, at least in Standard, people are overestimating the value of giving someone a card in the early game. I actually think giving someone a random card is less of a drawback against most decks early than ramping them, and Path to Exile is consensus pretty alright. The fact that you can use this cheaply if you need to, and can always just fire it off at 4 makes it playable.

I agree--I can't be too upset with WotC over this. As was mentioned, they had no reason to believe the artwork wasn't 100% legit, especially with a veteran artist like Felix. I will briefly mention that I AM mildly annoyed that they screwed up the wording on Zaffai, Thunder Conductor, because THAT is something they should've caught, lol.

Something doesn't quite add up about this discussion. Fan art isn't protected by copyright afaik, since it is itself infringing on copyright, so the artist shouldn't need permission to use it.

IIRC from another case WotC may have the ability prohibit someone from using their characters, but cannot simply claim and use the fan-art without permission either since they only have the right to the character not that particular piece of art. So that should put this in a situation where neither party has sole proprietorship of the artwork. A third party selling a second level infringement to either of them wouldn't follow the usually incorrect formula of "two wrongs make a right" either.

Was discussing this on FB and had to look up some stuff. So generally speaking, an artist has automatic copyright for any work they produce. However, WotC holds the trademark for its characters, so using them for your own personal art would typically be trademark infringement. It's still infringement whether or not the artist profits. So, ignoring anything else, WotC can't just take the art without permission but would also be within its rights to sue the artist for violating the trademark. I'm not sure what the outcome of the suit would be--my guess would be a court order saying the artist could not display the work publicly or otherwise distribute it via any other medium, unless WotC could prove the violation resulted in monetary damages.

    But then there's this: https://company.wizards.com/en/legal/fancontentpolicy

I take this to mean that WotC basically grants automatic licenses to all fan content produced based on its IPs, with the caveat that by granting the license, WotC reserves the ability to use the content without any further permission from the creator. The way I see this working is that it exists essentially as an ultimatum--either you follow this policy when you create fan content or we sue you for violating our trademark.

So while WotC in an of itself probably can use the art, that doesn't mean that Jason Felix (who I would assume is classified as an independent contractor, not a WotC employee) was allowed to steal it for his own personal gain. I don't think the artist can go after WotC, but I do think there's probably some sort of cause of action against Jason Felix. Whether WotC does the cool thing and offers something to the artist, we'll have to see.

Honestly this card makes me want to play Pop Quiz as a one or two-of in UW Control. Having an instant speed Divination where one of the cards is always a universal removal spell seems gas.

I don't understand why it's relevant that you can use Lesson cards in a maindeck as the Learn mechanic does not let you tutor for them. Agreed though that some of the colorless cards may be useful if they otherwise synergize with what a deck is already trying to do.

Does Ward mean stuff like Frost Titan, Diffusion Sliver and what not will be receiving errata?

And MaRo said Ward will not be replacing Hexproff, they will coexist. But he did mention a week ago Hexproof is the evergreen ability most in danger of losing its evergreen status.

Yeah, I'd guess those sorts of cards will receive an update. They barely put hexproof on stuff anymore anyway, or it's conditional like on Dream Trawler. This is the sort of thing that bothers me though--why get rid of hexproof? Just print answers to it like you always have. Give us more playable edicts and wraths and hexproof is fine.

Cards look sweet so far. Learn and Lessons are cool mechanics--going to be difficult to figure out a correct balance. Both the Learn and the Lesson cards are mostly below-rate, but having consistent access to them makes them worth more than they would be otherwise. The 5 CMC (MV?) removal spell in particular is interesting--you'd never maindeck that card but having access to it when there's a weird permanent that's going to kill you is neat.

I'm sick and tired of the DFCs...

Why? I think they're awesome. More decision-points = more interesting games and more chances for skilled play to matter.
