Oct 15, 2021DL_Ojutai posted a message on Stranger things secret lair spoiler and upcoming secret lairsI like the Mirrodinsanity and movie posters one, but not sure I'll get either. Usually limit my SL purchases to ones that really excite me or that have pieces for multiple decks. Initially I thought the artifact lands had like a metallic treatment (sort of like the etched foils--if you ever collected sports cards, think the old Fleer Metal treatment), but without that I'm a little less interested. Still really excited to get my Signets.Posted in: The Rumor Mill

If they are buying multiple boxes than one of each Innistrad 3 to facilitate both sets will have been possible for two months before this product. Again, this product adds nothing that you couldn't already do before it came out.
Block drafts were a thing and players didn't need a separate product to make it happen. All WotC is doing here is selling you the same stuff again 2-4 months after they came out. Don't get swindled.
I don't think you're getting my point. You can now draft both sets with only one box. You may not have bought a box of either stand-alone set, but you can now buy one box with cards from both. I'm not sure we know (do we?) if ALL the cards from both sets will be in the double-feature packs or if they're selected for a tighter drafting experience, but I can see benefits and drawbacks for either. But yeah, I'm not sure why you see this as some third product people who already bought the other two sets are getting instead of seeing it as an alternative to the other two.
Frankly, I'm not honestly sure how you can get "swindled" into buying something you want; someone who buys this is voluntarily handing over their money, for whatever reason. No one NEEDS this (or any MtG cards, for that matter), but it might be a good option for a certain demographic. And if it's truly an underwhelming experience it won't sell well, and they might not do it again.
Oct 13, 2021DL_Ojutai posted a message on Should Wizards of the Coast / Hasbro Be Concerned About Flesh and Blood TCG?Seems like a lot of anecdotal stuff about F&B's threat to MTG as far as I've seen. I see it advertised a lot and I see some content creators pushing it but I don't know anyone who plays and none of the LGS around here run events even though some do have product for sale. I'd need to see national numbers, but my guess is that F&B's market share is smaller than its marketing makes it out to be.Posted in: Magic General
We had Weiss-Schwarz tourneys fire for a while at my old store because I got some folks into it, but I don't think that's indicative of it being in serious competition with MTG.

Hahahahaha that's hilarious. "Go to a store with a draft." Right, because restrictions will be lifted in the next two months, what with delta variant cases on the rise again.
I mean, most stores are doing in-store play now, just with a mask requirement. Drafting in-store is already happening and has been for a while.
But I'm not sure the original comment is useful anyway. Lots of people buy boxes to draft with friends, which seems like the primary market for something like this. Different experience than wanting to go to an LGS. Not to mention we don't know how the set is curated (i.e., are 3 packs of this the same as a 2/1 or totally different), so the draft experience could be pretty different.
Oct 4, 2021It's interesting to see reasonable minds juxtaposed against the more vitriolic segments of the community. But yeah, I think this is awesome even though I have 0 interest in it personally. Makes for a sweet sealed/limited experience. Also, while I'm blessed to be able to get a box of each set separately, some people might really enjoy busting a single product containing cards from both. The people buying boxes of MH and CV are not the people buying Double Feature, unless they just really want to draft it.Posted in: The Rumor Mill

People dont care for all the other stuff, they really just want the card draw to be better.
Instead you get what you dont want with a worse deal.
Its like you want a fast car, instead they sell you a big truck, plenty of room, but you actually wanted a fast car, and not a truck.
Some might argue, well its still a car, so quit complaining ...
The card is mediocre fine , but people wanted it to be better in its backside, could make the front side way worse, as casting these from the grave is much more potential with all kinds of shenanigans (as dredging it, draw+discard, tutoring for it with stuff like Intuition , the backside is what carries the card and its most relevant part, the front is a bonus in case you draw it and need the body ... if you value the front as the relevant part however it changes how you evaluate the card).
So it sounds like you're saying that people just wanted a different card?
Sep 21, 2021DL_Ojutai posted a message on [MID] Dennick, Pious Apprentice // Dennick, Pious Apparition— The Third Power previewI'm late to this party, but yes, he would be legitimately insane if you got a clue anytime a creature entered the yard from anywhere. Frankly, I think he'd still be pretty busted even if he could just trigger multiple times per turn. Every counterspell, wrath, and removal spell also generates card advantage? Every time an opponent mills you or themselves you get cards? The fact that you still have to actually crack the clue only makes it less busted than straight up drawing, but that analysis ignores the fact that (1) if you're playing the long game, it doesn't really matter and (2) artifact synergies.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
I've been playing him in a UW Control shell and as is he's super playable on both sides, but without a ton of other creatures he tends to eat removal pretty quickly (twice though!). Honestly I've been trying to brew some sort of list around disturb just to get max value from him because he's probably my favorite card in the set, but I just haven't found enough to do with the yard in U/W/x.

Those lands though--they're amazing for control and bigger midrange decks. I'll probably want to snag a set of all of those for the stash box.
Aug 30, 2021I'd have to go back and look, but I don't think they print and/or sell enough of the Commander Collections to really move the needle on prices. Ophiomancer MIGHT see a dip because its price tag is almost 100% due to scarcity, but I don't think the other cards will move much personally.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Aug 24, 2021Number of standard sets per year is the same as it ever was as far as I know. The masters sets are reprints, so nothing new. Forgotten Realms sold extremely well, and as someone who doesn't know anything about D&D it was literally just another MtG set for me. Not a huge fan of the mechanics but most of the set-specific mechanics are geared more toward limited play anyway. No one has to buy any UB, and we have no idea how "pushed" the cards will actually be regardless (if TWD is any indication, not all that much). Commander players will literally just buy singles unless they're genuinely interested in the set, and there are 0 cards you HAVE to own to "stay relevant" in a casual format. For me--I liked Commander Legends and again, Baldur's Gate might as well just be some new plane to me so I could personally care less if it's a crossover.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
The Pioneer announcement is a little weird, but I guess they're trying to push it again with in-store play returning. I'm guessing they'll be every bit as good as any other event deck; i.e., not that great but better than a starter.
Truly this mindset makes no sense to me. Buy the stuff you like, don't buy the stuff you don't like, if you want to be hyper-competitive that's your choice and just buy the singles you need.

i love the arts on some.
i hate that these continue to have sol rings and command towers. some of the card choices are lackluster. ghoulcaller gisa is cool, kinda... but not necessarily in a premium product. but hey at least i guess she's finally available in foil? neat? i like the original art much more. oh well. phyrexian arena has a billion printings, its iconic... but its not necessary to have it AGAIN when things like razaketh, necropotence, and dark confidant all exist and need another reprint sometime. i'm tired of seeing reanimate in every product. where's animate dead or necromancy or dance of the dead? where is literally anything else?
i'll pick up singles from this one - probably just gisa and liliana.
I sort of like the Sol Ring/Command Tower thing only because they're all color-specific art and I find it at least a little cool to rep your favorite color. That said, Reanimate only has one more recent printing than Animate Dead (Ultimate Masters and Jumpstart v. Eternal Masters), Phyrexian Arena is a staple that hasn't had a reprint since Conspiracy: Take the Crown, and Ophiomancer/Toxic Deluge are just great includes. Gisa and Liliana are a little weird though. Necropotence and Razaketh would have been sweet, although I didn't think Bob got played all that much in EDH.
