This defeats the whole purpose of the core sets entirely, which is to be 100% reprints. Yeah, they could change it some time, but they would need to come up with a good reason to do so.

    Good reason: money

Wizards is a business, they survive if people buy their stuff. The Core Set never performs as well as the expansions, and they've been taking steps (such as adding legendary creatures and black-border cards in 10th edition) to change that.

I want to teach my GF how to play this game, but it just keeps getting more and more complicated. Now there are going to be planewalkers in 11?

I guess wizards just wants to keep the players they have, and does not really care about trying to get new players. I mean, we all would love planewalkers in 11th, but this game is just getting too complicated for new players.

You can teach someone the game without using the Core Set. Wizards' research has shown that most people don't start with the Core Set anyway, which is why they're introducing the Intro Packs. As a judge and a weekly FNM player, I've taught the game to a number of people. I have a couple simple decks (elves, assassins, etc.) that I keep around to help people learn the game without too many complicated mechanics.

I think it would be great to see planeswalkers in 11th. I'm really hoping they'll also add multicolor. It would be great to see cards like Putrefy and Mortify in the Core Set.
