Jul 29, 2021I think for EDH it’s almost a necessity. The sheer volume of cards alone dictates that you need a way to search for stuff electronically. I'm not saying it can't be done without it. A couple of the guys that work at my LGS have enough knowledge from selling/trading cards as their day job to do it, but even they would need some help to fully optimize if it involved some of the older odd ball stuff. As a player coming back from a 10 year break just being able to go to Gather and search for similar affects and tribes has been amazing.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Jul 22, 2021Ra_ posted a message on Have You Ever Unintentionally Pissed Someone Off In Your Commander Playgroup?I pissed a guy off last weekend. It wasn’t that I was trying to just piss him off, but I knew the deck he was using and he was the over dog. Through a crazy combination of things including doing “planes chase” I had 25 power on the board and ready to swing on turn 3. I sent it all at him. He was very salty for the rest of the game. However the game ended up being very close after that. He eventually won, but having to conserve his life allowed the rest of us to be in contention the whole time. Later as everyone was leaving we were all talking and he admitted it was the right move but it still sucks taking a hit like that so early. I think saltiness is just going to happen sometimes. Especially if people are trying to play power levels that approach cEDH.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Jun 24, 2021Ra_ posted a message on Have You Ever Unintentionally Pissed Someone Off In Your Commander Playgroup?I've had it happen a couple of times. It seems to usually be when someone is having a bad time anyway and its just a straw that broke the camel's back kind of thing. I don't have a play group outside of an LGS and I have come to realize that some people just get too serious or can't handle it if they are the one getting disrupted when they are ahead. For example one of the people at my LGS is a combo-ish player and gets really upset when someone interrupts her plans when the pieces of her win-con start coming together. Since there usually aren't many people looking to jump in/out of PODs, who ever made the mistake of preventing her from winning finds themselves targeted beyond reason the next round. I've seen her focus so hard on punishing someone that she loses the round just from wasting all her resources. At this point most of the regulars know and expect this so they either try and avoid PODs with her or know to pull out something strong if they are “it”.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
If your salty guy makes a regular habit of that kind of thing you may find you may just need to adjust your thinking/play to deal with him. You may also find you are not the only one that doesn’t like playing like that and gravitate to those folk. If possible that is, sometimes its luck of the draw who’s at the store.
May 26, 2021Hello folks, I discovered commander and got back into MTG about a 2 years ago after a long break. The formats casualness is what drew me back in. With my work schedule being able to randomly drop by a LGS and get a few games in is perfect. My first commander deck was based loosely on this primer and a couple other lists I found that all had Maze’s End as a win con. I’d always been known as a lands guy so this seemed perfect. I showed up my first night with high hopes, rusty skills, and a deck that was a clunky mess. I lost, a lot. I did meet some cool people and had fun. I also learned a lot that night and have been working to get better every game. With the world gone mad in 2020 I didn’t get to play much, but I really set down and tinkered on a couple decks. Starting with this one. I originally thought that Child would look really threatening in the command zone so I tried a couple different commanders. What I didn’t realize was just having the old-school dual-lands would elevate my threat in peoples’ eyes (I didn’t realize that some of the old cards had gotten so ridiculous). So fast forward a bit and I’m looking at the deck and thinking about if having Child as the commander is a good idea. Then I played myself against a couple other decks after making a couple tweaks. It seemed promising and then I got a few real games in. This thing is nuts fun now. Big thanks to the Primer guys and everybody that tossed ideas around in this tread.Posted in: Multiplayer Commander Decklists
My list is below. I still want to make a couple tweaks, but I think things are pretty solid right now.
I’d like to add:
Gift of Immortality to replace Journey to Eternity so it can go back to another deck that can’t run gift.
Ad Nauseam and possibly Manabond. Bob’s performance tells me that Ad Nauseam should be good. Manabond should be great with that as well, but I hate mass discarding. I think I would pull Ulvenwald Hydra for the Ad Nauseam. If I did Manabond as well, maybe Beseech the Queen?
Last Stand is an old pet card from long ago that I really think I’d like to get in here as well since there are 2 cards that give lands all basic land types in this deck. Don’t know what I’d cut, but I’m going to make this one happen.
There are 2 cards I want to mention my thoughts on that are newer and haven’t been covered in here.
The World Tree this one comes into play taped, but if you have 6+ lands they all now tap for any color. Seems really good in the deck. If your <5 it taps for a green so that’s not too bad since this is a mostly green deck.
Dread Presence this one has been mentioned, but nobody posted experiences. I’ve got 3 ways to make things swamps so he’s pretty easy to get going. Doing 2 damage to things is handy, but the draw is also really good. You’ll lose it to Child, but it has nice versatility.
Aug 22, 2020I've found (in my admittedly short commander experience) with running a lot of disruption that it really can't be saved for when you need it. Getting a board wipe out early before everyone's plans come together keeps those them trying to rebuild instead of coming at you.Posted in: Multiplayer Commander Decklists
Out of curiosity, You said you didn't want a lot of permanents so I get not having mana rocks, but why no land ramp? You've got a commander that gives you access to green the rampiest color out there.
Aug 21, 2020Its the nature of the deck, wrecking everyone's board state multiple times just makes you the logical first target. I've got a black deck that is basically just Damnation and Drain Life and the same thing happens. Makes for interesting strategy decisions some times, but doing something challenging and different is half the fun.Posted in: Multiplayer Commander Decklists
Aug 15, 2020Another new one in M21 is Fungal Rebirth. I've found it fits in well in my Saproling deck in that its an instant and gives me 2 bodies (under the right conditions). I feel like its a more versatile card than the Eternal Witness I cut to make room for it.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
I'll second the Hex parasite it has done massive work in multiple matches for me.
