posted a message on Heroic trigger questions
    Quote from CandleGhost
If I were to target Anax and Cymede with Miraculous Recovery, what happens?
    A) The heroic trigger does not trigger.
    B) The heroic trigger does trigger.

If I were to target Anax and Cymede with The Warrior hero card to give them haste, does it trigger heroic?

(I am not familiar with heroic so I don't quiet get how it works.)

    1. No, the heroic ability doesn't function in the graveyard. It only functions on the battlefield.

    2. No, heroic only triggers when you cast a spell. It doesn't trigger when you target the creature with an ability such as the activated ability on The Warrior.

I'll remind you that this forum isn't for arguing about rulings that another judge made. If you are unhappy with the policy, this isn't the place to discuss that. This forum is to explain what the rules and policy are, not to argue about what they should be.

    I agree. Thread locked.

posted a message on Pendelhaven + Skullbrair
    Quote from Steamsteam

Skull has counters on him. Does pendel +1/+2 him still?

    Thanks in adv.

If the counters are +/+ counters, then it is no longer a 1/1 creature, so no.

Edit: Actually, your question is a bit ambiguous, so I'll clarify. If you already activated Pendelhaven earlier in the turn when Skullbriar was 1/1 and then put counters on Skullbriar, the bonus will continue to apply until end of turn. On the other hand, if there are counters on Skullbriar when you activate Pendelhaven, the activation is illegal because Skullbriar is not a 1/1 creature.

posted a message on Hexproof with Mass Destruction Abilities
    Quote from Orzhov Guildmage
Alright, just a quick question about hexproof cards. On the description for hexproof it says that it cant be the target of opponents' spells or abilities. So say I control Lone Revenant and another creature and my opponent casts an overloaded Mizzium Mortars on their turn. Since it no longer "targets" Lone Revenant, will it bypass the hexproof ability?

    Yes, for exactly that reason.

posted a message on Library of Leng, revealed top card
    Quote from 2goth4U
has there been an [O] reversal?

Not officially, no. Before I posted, I checked my ruling with a member of the rules team. Neither I nor that member of the rules team remembered the existing official ruling, so we went with an interpretation of the rule that makes sense.

The bolded section seems to say that the characteristics will be undefined in spite of the effects of Melek or Telepathy

Yes, that's what the official ruling says. If you are ever the Head Judge of a tournament where this question comes up, feel free to use the official ruling instead of the sensible ruling. Both rulings are consistent with the wording of the rule despite being opposites of each other.

I'm sure the rule will be clarified as soon as a Library of Leng/Chandra Ablaze/Melek deck starts tearing up the Legacy metagame Wink

posted a message on IPG: Is this Cheating? DQ at FNM?
Everybody who says this is definitely not cheating is just as incorrect as everybody who says it definitely is cheating. The decision whether it is or isn't cheating can only be made after investigation, and none of us were there to investigate why the player did what he did.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, we have either this:
A player has illegal, insufficient, or another players’ cards in their deck

Remove any cards that shouldn’t be there and replace any cards that should – or Basic Lands of their choice if
the deck/sideboard is short. If discovered during a draw effect, have them redraw after fixing and shuffling
their deck. Additionally, recommend that the players count their deck and sideboard before they start a match.
    or this:
    - Serious Problems -
There are also certain behaviours that will not be tolerated in any event. Any player engaging in the following
    must be disqualified from your event;
    ● Aggressive, violent or abusive behaviour (physical or verbal)
    ● Cheating, lying or intentionally making illegal game actions or trying to avoid penalties
    ● Influencing Match outcomes (by incentives, coercion or random methods)
    ● Theft (this includes things like replacing a chase rare in a draft with one from their binder)

If your opponent does something you find questionable, call a judge. The judge will determine based on his or her investigation what needs to be done.

And that's really all that can be said here.

posted a message on interactions with Nightveil Spector
    Quote from Zeke_787
So my opponent is still very confused on this interpretation.

The reason why he is confused is because Nightveil Spector dosnt explicitly say that for spells that you actually have to pay the mana cost.

It doesn't say that because it doesn't have to.

So is there any where in the comprehensive rules that goes over this or is there any better way to help explain this interpretation.

The rules say that you have to pay the total cost to cast a spell. Nightveil Specter doesn't say anything to override those rules.

601.2. To cast a spell is to take it from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect. Casting a spell follows the steps listed below, in order. If, at any point during the casting of a spell, a player is unable to comply with any of the steps listed below, the casting of the spell is illegal; the game returns to the moment before that spell started to be cast (see rule 717, "Handling Illegal Actions"). Announcements and payments can't be altered after they've been made.

posted a message on Wild Pair- only creature spells?
    Quote from Hardened
    Wild Pair

Seems like a silly question, but does Wild Pair only apply to creature spells?

Not necessarily. In certain situations it is possible for a noncreature spell to resolve and enter the battlefield as a creature. For example, Copy Artifact on Ornithopter. However:

Would Slime Molding allow me to search?

Slime Molding would not allow you to search since the permanent that's entering the battefield, an Ooze token, was never a spell, let alone one you cast from your hand.
