You mentioned liking Merfolk. One of the best Merfolk in the block is Inkfathom Infiltrator. At my last draft I managed to get Helm of the Ghastlord on it a few times with predictable results. Good times:)
nice, not very specal alone, but like you pointed out, would be insane if pumped up(Starts drooling, while thinking of the possibilities in type 1-1.5 with Underwater Ruins"I think that was the name", and Lord of Atlantis, not to mention other things, that are far more deadlier), sounds like mad fun.
Cauldron of Souls is pretty unplayble even in limited. The -1/-1 counter is VERY relevant. The fact that a lot of kill is dealt in -1/-1 counters (Scar, Wither, Creature with Wither and Power of Fire) makes it not worth as much as you'd like. Best creature to target with the Cauldron (should have to play it) is the Moarsel Hoarder because it can remove the -1/-1 counter. Cauldron is very slow and the effect isn't important enough. It doesn't combo (once the creature goes to the graveyard, it won't remember it has persist when it comes back into play since it's a "new" creature with a -1/-1 counter on it).
Anyway, for drafting, follow signals. It's tough to with all the hybrid, but if you start seeing a color heavily undrafted (good picks around 7-10), then move into it. Try to stay away from black, unless you open an Incremental Blight. Note: if someone passes you this first pack, it's a pretty clear signal they don't to be in black. They might have opened a bomb rare or FOIL money rare, but it's about the best spell you could ask for in this format.
Curve is very important. Make sure you have plenty 2, 3, and 4 drops. Bounce is amazing (Consign to Dream and AEthertow). It gets rid of the enchant creature auras and those are very good. Don't take more auras than creatures, make sure you have more creatures. The auras are only good if you get enough creatures of that hybrid. Scuttlemutt is first pickable (it's mana acceleration, mana fixing, color fixing, and color screwing-make your opponent's pump creature smaller by making it a different colored creature). Removal is limited and Wither is probably the reason why. Boards tend to stay pretty clear because there's a lot of trading. Playing defensively isn't suggested as this is a very aggressive format. Power of Fire is an amazing card is could be first picked. Makes a machine gun combo with any of the untappers in the set. Silkbind Faerie is the common. Take it when you can, pass it seldomly. Realize that when you're drafting hybrid creatures, they could be either or, you don't have to be R/G if you have a bunch of R/G hybrid creatures. I started a draft with SIX (R/G) creatures and ended up playing W/R because green dried up and white was flowing and I didn't need to play green to play the good (R/G) creatures I got. Firespout is amazing (another first pick).
Basically try to find the color that's underdrafted and go into it. Remember when building your deck to figure the hybrid cards as the dominate color of your deck. This will help you realize what colors you're really in. In the above draft that I mentioned, I had one playable hard red spell (Ember Gale) and that was it. Check in the limited forum as well because there's a plethora of threads/discussions on picks/deck building. Good luck and welcome back!
To all: BTW, it would definitely work faster in a type 1- 1.5 decks(Black Lotus, Sol Ring, and such), so I don't know what you're talking about. Also by combo, I don't mean keap using it on the same monsters, becuase just like you said, it doesn't work on monsters with counters on it.
OMG, I want one, scratch that, I want 4x Scuttlebuts, and only for 3 mana, wow. Also Cosign to Dream is great, especially for only 3 mana.
I highly doubt Cauldron of Souls will be banned from any eternal format.
It is so broken(I can think of a few sick combos off hand, and I'm sure there is a lot more), If it was x tap, then ok, but the way it is, you could call any number out of the air for the effect(can you say Cauldron of Souls +Wrath of God, and that's just the simplest combo), but we'll see.
First of all, keep up with the rest of us. We're doing Krakens. As for Old Man of the Sea, it's been removed. I could have sworn I updated the list. I get the impression you didn't the memo. Namely the one that announced a massive change in the creature types of over 1000 creature cards. Ali From Cairo is no longer an Ali-from-Cairo.
Oh, are we now, then I'll fall in line, Deep-Sea Kraken.
I heard a rumor to that effect, however WOTC can say what they want, but Ali from Cairo shall always be referred to as "Summon Ali from Cairo".
Remember the Cardinal rule of MTG(that refers to mana symbols, as well as creature type), it is what it says it is.
The current draftformat is 3x shadowmoor and a good database to look through the cards is magiccards.info, but of course the site won't tell you what cards are good but probably the limitedforum here will do
Ok, thanks.
PS. Lol well I know, I was just basically gonna read a bunch of the cards, to see which ones are good.
Wow, makes me want to make a merfolk deck after draft(Type 1-1.5 format), there are some insanely good Merfolks.
WTH, Cauldron of Souls ! That is so gonna be banned from type 1, and 1.5 lol.
Also a Dragon that basically gives the owner a private Wheel of Fortune(well more or less), decently priced(sounds like fun).
Good new elves to add to my elf deck, and just like I heard, Goblins are making a comeback, just wow.
This expansion seems like it should be renamed to, "Revival of the Forgotten" (they have a few spirits in the expansion as well).
I'm gonna play draft today, what's the current block(expansion sets), and can someone link me to a good database, where I can check to see what good cards are in the sets?
That's the second time you've brought that up. What makes you think you're the only person who's ever had Magic cards stolen from them?
You don't need to play in toploaders to prevent having a card stolen. And you don't need to "forbid" your opponents from touching your deck to prevent having a card stolen. They're right there in front of you. Just watch them!
No, you misunderstood, the Toploaders is to protect the cards from damage($800+ for a card, is not pocket change). The other part is(with having a judge near, when someone is looking through a deck, which is for stopping thieves). Keep in mind, that a Black Lotus costs so much, that even a little damage can drop the value of it by a hundred.
It is so easy for someone to steal cards from you at an actual tourny(opposed to just playing for fun at a card shop, it Isn't funny).
why not? start with 7 on the draw and you have 9 cards avaibled at turn 2 but you can even do it with 5 cards And much more outside the box than using Storm Entity or Ignite Memory is hard
Well total yea, but it didn't take that many cards, and nope, no storm tricks. You were on the right track before.
PS. You guys have no idea how close you were to the combination.
Of course you used some combination of R -> 3 damage spells + a fireblast but that's nothing special ^^ I know none of my combinations is true but they are much more fun than Mountain, Lotus, Mountain, mox, burn burn burn burn burn burn fireblast
Trust me, It's more fun then you are giving it credit for being.
Personally, I don't care for burn decks, but when I thought up this combo, I had to give it a try.
PS. I actually like making unique decks that no one will see coming, until It's to late, but like I said, I had to give this combo a try.
To Apex: Think outside of the box, of course I didn't have 9 cards. You're on the right track, but I assure you, I did 20 damage.
T1(on the draw) Mountain, Lotus for RRR, Ruby, Rite, Rite RR RR RR RR S=4 H=3 Burning Wish -> Burning Wish -> Burning Wish -> Rite H=2 S=8 RRRR Braid of Fire, Storm Entity 10/10, miss that it has haste, go
T2 add R to manapool with Braid, play red Berserk and attack with 20/20 Entity
nope

Can't you just Dragonstorm for 4 Hellkites with some ridiculous hand on the first turn, and you don't even need Black Lotus?
Mountain, Rite x 4, Dragonstorm?
So T1: Mountain
T2: Rite x 4, Dragonstorm
Though if you need a "burn" deck to do this, I'm thinking:
Your opponent went crazy with Gush-Bond and you Price of Progressed his ass for alot on the 2nd turn, add some Lightning Bolts and Chain Lightnings, and you've got 20 damage. Maybe even a Fireblast was involved.
Also, this isn't a puzzle. We are just guessing at what YOU did (which could be one out of many solutions). If it was a puzzle, it would have already been solved, since valid solutions were already given (and like neon-chan said, there are about a million turn 2 kill with just red cards only solutions to this "puzzle").
Edit: If you count semantics, Price of Progress is the perfect solution to this scenario. You need to deal 20 damage you say? How about 4 to him and 4 to you for 8 damage? Or Flame Rift, 4 to him, 4 to you for 8 damage, add a Fireblast and some bolts, and you've got 20 damage.
Edit: Place holder, I have to rethink that deck, tonight when I get back from the tourny, I'll post 1-2 type 1 insane combo decks I can think of.

I believe they'll figure it out, but they are clearly over looking it, so I suppose I'll post the answers now.
PS. I'm gonna post it on the OP all.
To Xyc: I thought this would be fun, that's all.
OMG, you are so super close, I'm scared.
To Binary: You really want me to give the answer now, they are so close?
Well total yea, but it didn't take that many cards, and nope, no storm tricks. You were on the right track before.

Lol funny, but no.
