Definitely some solid reprints to go along with all of the new goodies for these decks:
    Lightning Greaves (always fun)
    Leonin Shikari
    Captivating Vampire
    Door of Destinies
    Black Market
    Scion of the Ur Dragon
    Memory Plunder
    Fist of the Suns
    Mirari's Wake

Overall I would say any of the decks really would be worth picking up and I'll likely grab a set at some point just to have to play around with :).

  • posted a message on Question for Card Shop owners...
Currently shops tend to pay $80 per box from distributors. It used to be possible to get them for $75 or even a tiny bit lower per box, but in the past few years, that price was raised to $80 for those with decent volume purchases, very low volume purchases may very well be higher, but I am not aware of that specifically.

On average brick and mortar shops tend to offer boxes at around $100 for pre-order, occasionally offering for slightly less for purchases of multiple boxes. After release that price often goes up to between $110 and $120 depending upon the shop, with $4 being common for single packs. and 3/$11 or 3/$10 for multiple pack discount.

Due to the nature of the value of sets after the release of the set and the initial hype has died down, most of the shop's box sales will occur during the pre-sale or the week or two immediately after release. Though people can get boxes cheaper online, a lot of customers will show their loyalty to their local game store of choice and be willing to pay more there, but typically not if the price is too high. Its a balancing act for a shop, to try to get as high of a margin as they can from their sales, while at the same time not lowering their sales by pushing customers to other shops or online to purchase boxes.

Packs however, tend not to be a problem when it comes to pricing. Plenty of people still seem willing to pay $4 per pack for standard packs, assuming there are decent enough cards in the set or a few high value cards worth gambling for to open packs for. The discounts for multiple pack purchases will encourage more sales, and bring more than just the casual pack buyers to grab up packs when they are looking for them.

Most shops try to aim for margins of around 40-50% for what they sell in hopes of earning enough from those margins to cover the costs of their rent/bills at the very least to break even month to month (though obviously this isn't always possible and lesser margins have to be accepted in order to move product that would otherwise be collecting dust and stagnating necessary cash flow for the shop). A lot of shops as well will find ways to move excess product from a most recent set by carefully managing how much product they bring in, as well as choosing to use pack prizes specific to the most recent set for things like FNM and other events.

Once again though, for the specific question asked, right now it is basically $80/box for what most shops pay from distributors.

Well, since it hasn't been noted here yet, I'll mention that the price of blue Revised Dual lands have skyrocketed since the announcement of Legacy as a part of the Grand Prix's. In the last 10 days or so, the following has occurred (all prices for NM, TCGP Low): Underground Sea from $295 to $400, Volcanic Island from $270 to $300, Tropical Island from $200 to $220, and Tundra from $155 to $185. So today those 4 cards will run you $1105. Ten days ago that same $1105 would have gotten you those 4 cards AND a Bayou and you'd still have $15 in your pocket.

Also interesting to note are fresh accusations towards Star City of them having insider information of this announcement, resulting in an increase in both their buy and sell prices. Ben Bleiweiss of SCG addresses it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/6o9ofg/24_hours_before_the_legacy_pt_was_announced_today/dkfxcmq/

While the Increase to Underground Sea (35%), and Tundra (19%) are sizeable enough, one is the most popular and scarcest of all of the original duals who's price nearly always tends to fluctuate the most over time, and the other is the lowest end of the current blue duals, which can certainly lead to it having a greater percentage increase than some of the others, in this case: Volcanic Island (11%), and Tropical Island (10%), neither of which are that significant of movements on the overall scheme of things. I also suspect the Underground Sea price will likely settle back down some over the next 6 months after such a spike (as tends to often be the case with such similar sudden spikes with duals in more recent times. And the increase in Tundra only simply brings it up closer to some of the others, I mean a blue dual for $155 before certainly seems low in the grand scheme of things, and $185 after still seems fine enough especially when compared to the others.

As for Ben's comments about the timing of any increases, honestly I believe the explanation provided to be perfectly reasonable and certainly makes logical sense. Supply and demand is always a difficult balance to keep up when one is running an mtg based business as I have as well in the past, though nothing like the scale of anything SCG is doing. Buy/Sell prices have to be adjusted often in order to make sure that supply is kept up and that profit margins are kept reasonable to warrant the effort. As far as going through and systematically re-pricing from oldest to newest as they said they were doing, honestly I had to do that on several occasions myself as well, and it certainly does take time to properly examine supply/demand/buy/sell pricing and other factors to find the right balance.

As it says, ive been playing for 5-6 years, and now that im out of college and looking to do adulting, I had to get a jump start on my loans, so im looking to rid an entire collection, does anyone have any good success stories on how to do it? its alot of high end cards and completed edh with plenty of bulk
    Merged -knickm

Depending on what you have, I'd advise you to keep the good stuff and dump the bulk. Nobody quits Magic for good (especially with a weak reason like "looking to do adulting"), and you'll wish you never sold out. Your MTG collection won't make any real difference in your student loans, or anything else for that matter. This is coming from an almost-40 year old dude that is very much an adult - house, family, career, etc. I've sold out a few times and I retrospectively regret each instance. Just put the cards in a box in the back of the closet and focus on your life. MTG will be there when you come back.

I would likely suggest keeping a couple of edh decks that you particularly like, you should also be able to safely keep any reserved list cards you have. But honestly the rest if you aren't going to be using them anytime soon, you should sell. The rate of reprinting with wizards these days is at a significantly faster pace than in previous years. Between Commander products, Masters sets, vaults, anthology box sets, and the occasional reprinting in other sets, to hold non-reserved list cards can end up being a net negative to the value of ones collection. In the short term for the cards that don't get reprinted the values can certainly increase, but in the longer term, I fully expect pretty much every non-reserved list card to get a decent reprint which will bring their values down from where they currently are.

Check out this thread though (that these posts were moved to), there is some great advice on how to best monetize a collection depending upon how much effort you want to put into it.

Got this in a trade today... not 100% what it is. My guess is a Russian promo Elvish Mystic. Am'I right? If so, what's the value on it?

The card is a Russian language FNM promo Elvish Mystic. You can get a playset for as low as $24 + $4 shipping right now on ebay. The regular English version looks like it goes for around $3.

    Hope that helps.

I saw that, but Russian brings in a premium when it's foiled out, right?

The first price I listed was for the Russian versions. Playset of Russian promos for $24 + $4 shipping.

If you cant tell I think the mod team around here is junk, and Ill say how I feel in public view about the mods. Most of this forum is dead, general and the rumor mill seem to be the only places that get viewed. There are a total of 16 threads that have been active this year at all in this section. Thats 7 months, so about 2 posts a month. 3 of the posts are the same dude. Don't act like this was moved here to get eyes on it. It was moved to put it out of the main view of the site. I also cannot even find the first place my thread was hidden away in to count.

Getting kicked out of Origins is not a cheap **** up either. Two days of sales missed out on, Im sure theres no rebate for the money they put down on it, I would even bet they got charged the 500$ fine for leaving early.

That's the thing though, whether you like the mods or not, at the end of the day this IS the right place for these forums for this post. Its not about views its about where in the logical structure of the forums such a post would go. In this case store discussion in market street is the perfect place for the discussion of concerns about a store, and is indeed where people on these forums will tend to go to look for such information as information for all of the stores that have had concerns or otherwise posted about them are all in one convenient place. And while yes, there may not be a plethora of posts going on in market street these days, there are still plenty of people that keep an eye on it, and I'm sure this thread will still get plenty of views for those interested in the above mentioned store.

Personally I like that these forums are as organized as they are. It makes it a lot easier to find things, especially, as relevant to this topic, posts about what stores to watch out for when buying from them, or selling to them accordingly. I see no evidence that there is a conspiracy to "hide" this thread, or any evidence that the mods are trying to help the store in question by "hiding" the post.

As far as getting kicked out of origins not being a small deal. Of course its not, no one ever said that it wasn't. That's going to be a big knock on their reputation and is going to harm them financially and otherwise going forward. As before, I am glad you posted this information as it will be an important addition to the store discussion part of market street here, and will be available for people who want to check in about the store going forward. As before I only hope that this acts as a wakeup call to the store to get heir act together going forward.

This is why this place is so dead. This is a legit concern about an MTG vendor. Selling bootleg copies of anything leads down the moral road of how long til they buy some chinese bootlegs over off the bootlegmtg reddit and send them out randomly.

Whatever, defend the shop by moving this thread off to some dead forum. <snip> you too osierb18.

While it is certainly concerning that a store would sell bootleg anything, especially if it was knowingly, in this case it was not indeed anything magic the gathering related (even if the store primary deals in magic the gathering related items), and it made logical sense accordingly for how the forums is set up for it to be moved to the other games part of the forums, since the only thing they were caught selling bootlegs of was for a non-magic the gathering game. Moving it to the logical place given how the forums is set up is hardly any sort of defense of that shop, far from it in fact. As it stands anyway the mods moved it again to the market street forum in the store discussions section (the perfect place for store discussion, as I call market street my home on these forums.) Where people who want to check about concerns about buying from certain stores can go to see what issues people have had with them in the past. Now if anyone wants to check on information about the store in question it will be available for all who are interested to look.

Personally I find it more constructive to send a pm to a mod in a calm and respectful manner to ask why something was moved to a place in the forums that I may disagree with, to be able to offer discussion about where better it could be put if the mods believe the original place it was posted was not the best place for it. Anyhow, I think it ended up in the best place for it in the end, so if anyone else runs into any issues with them they can reply to the thread about the store here.

I do thank you for the original post on the subject though, as it is important for all of their customers to know to keep an eye out for potential issues if they were caught selling bootlegs as you say they were. With any luck getting kicked out of Origins will be a wakeup call to the store to not do such things again, and to make sure what they sell is legitimate else they get punished further by the manufacturers and distributors and potentially put out of business as a result.

  • posted a message on When to buy enemy fetches--now?
Personally I have all but ignored all of the hype around the Frontier format. Should wizards ever come out and actually make it a real format, then wonderful, until then, its all one big mass of speculation as to not only what sets will be included in the format, but also what cards may be banned in such a format. So fetches being reprinted I don't really hinge upon any sort of potential frontier format, entirely possible as it may eventually be.

As for the price of fetches and what people are willing to pay for them. Honestly the supply/demand curve being what it is, it is quite likely that there are quite a lot of people that are only willing to pay $20 for fetches and should the price get down to that point, those people would buy them. However in general there tend to be quite a lot of people in various stages of play (formats/casual/otherwise) that have more money and are willing to spend it in order to create the optimum build. Reprinting in standard would have the largest impact by far to bring their price down, but the question is whether wizards wants them back in standard or is happy with them being relegated to modern and older formats for the time being.

As noted as well, modern masters or similar masters sets seems to be something that wizards is going to be doing regularly, which leaves open plenty of room for the fetches to be reprinted again and possibly even more than once over the next few years. This will bring the price down, barring another unforeseen explosion in the size of the player base.

My thoughts on the best time to buy fetches hinge a great deal on when the person looking to do the buying would be needing them for the format or deck they were wanting to use them for. I believe right now is likely a current low point or close to it for fetches with the current modern masters still out there and available so if you plan to use them in the near term, then buying them now would not be a bad idea. To be honest though, the price on scalding tarn still makes me cringe, the others less so, up there sure, but at least within a reasonable mana-base cost structure. If you are just buying to hold for potential future use, then you would have to weigh whether you are willing to eat some future losses from a future reprint and when that reprint might be, versus buying them now at a temporary low point. Thusly, if you are buying them for a deck, buying now is 100% fine, if you are buying them for the purpose of avoiding having to buy them later at a higher price, but don't NEED them immediately, then honestly that's going to have to be up to you.

  • posted a message on How do preorders work in this game?
Typically stores that do pre-orders calculate the approximate amount of each card they expect to get from opening the number of boxes/cases that they are going to normally open, and figuring a typically safe number below the expected average, will pre-sell some number at or below that safe number. In the end everything tends to average out once you open a large enough amount of boxes/cases so as long as your safe number is giving enough margin for error, the amount opened should be easily enough to cover any pre-orders. As for pricing, typically that depends on the store. A lot of it is just trying to determine what the market is willing to pay for the cards, sometimes this means pricing higher and lowering it until people buy, or sometimes that can mean pricing lower and then selling through some amount of pre-order inventory and then raising the price and continuing that cycle until you have either run out of pre-orders or until they eventually stop selling or sell at a more normal pace. It is typically a good idea not to put your entire pre-order inventory up at a single price point just in case the price ends up being too low. Basically there is a bit to the process but given that typically the high point of value tends to be during pre-order season for a lot of cards, shops tend to make the most money during that period on cards before the market gets epically flooded after release.

The ebay bucks multiplier bonuses still come for a lot of people, I know both of my parents get them on their ebay accounts on a regular basis though not always at the same time. However about 18 months ago my offers just flat out stopped dead after getting them consistently for a while. When I contacted ebay about not getting them for 6+ months about a year ago, they had no explanation for it, apologized for the lack of deals and gave me a credit to use. I've poked at them every few months since until a few months ago, when an ebay bucks deal actually showed up in my account. Except, when I tried to activate it.... I got an error message I had never received before. Contacted ebay and the ebay reps didn't know what to make of it. The department that deals with promotions and stuff was supposed to look into it and then get back to me, but surprise surprise I never heard back. Kind of a bummer honestly, I was using that to help buy more stuff to re-sell, which ironically was helping ebay get more money .... but ah well. Thankfully my parents barely use any of their $500 max accumulation per quarter so I typically just end up buying on their accounts during the ebay buck promotions. Don't do as much of that these days though, but still rather annoying that it still isn't working after all this time. Hopefully they will eventually get it fixed so I can just use my own account, but thankfully at least the $15 off $75 sorts of deals work just fine. With those deals you just need to check the main ebay page to see it, I usually check at least once a day to see if anything like that pops up.

No problem and happy to help. Also due to a possible change to planeswalkers and the legend rule (related to spoilers of ixilan), people have been talking about mirror gallery as well as a possible target for a buyout, so definitely keep an eye on that card as well... just in case. The supply seemed quite low when I checked, but I don't know what it was at before.

Only card's that have any real value are the Ulamog's, Chandra's and Marvel's. Of those, Ulamog was already around 15-20$ before Ahmonkhet and will probably settle back to that level, Marvel will tank to 2-4$ and Chandra probably back to 5. Fast land's will hold value and the rest of the deck is common and uncommons, so...

Just doing a quick check on tcgplayer, it looks like Marvel is already back down to around $4, Ulamog is sitting at around $20, and Chandra Flamecaller sitting at around $5 as of right now. Looks like a lot of people are already selling off the cards in anticipation for the upcoming announcement. How much further they might drop is hard to say, we'll just have to wait and see.

If there is one thing one should never forget about demand for magic the gathering, it is that casual players make up the largest portion of the magic playerbase by a decent margin. And if there is one thing lots of casual magic players like, its angels and dragons, and heavenly inferno is a deck that is based upon both along with some demons thrown in for good measure. I cannot speak for how competitive the deck is in the overall picture of commander. But I know an awful lot of casual magic players buy the commander pre-cons and never edit them, just simply play them as is. The reason why heavenly inferno was the most popular (by a huge margin) of the original commander decks was due to popularity, not necessarily the sheer value of the cards in the deck themselves.

As far as the value for the deck though, I did a quick check on tcgplayer just to save time and came up with the following:
Foil Kaalia: $34, Stranglehold: $9, Path to Exile: $6, Avatar of Slaughter: $3, Lightning Greaves: $3, Anger: $2.50, Sol Ring: $2.50, Angel of Despair: $2, Dread Cacodemon: $2, Mana-Charged Dragon: $2, Tariel, Reckoner of Souls: $2, Akroma Angel of Fury: $2, Mother of Runes: $2, Bladewing the Risen: $2, Return to Dust: $2, and Several $1 cards on top of that. At current values, that is right around $80 worth of cards. Obviously that value is going to drop over the next few weeks as more supply hits the market, but still, I think people tend to underestimate the heavenly inferno deck, the casual demand for it, and the value of the cards that make up the deck (once again, competitive commander playability is a whole other thing and obviously each person would have to make up their own mind there accordingly, but for casual commander play with friends and such, I think the deck is just fine).
