A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

Games like bridge, poker, chess, and Go have been around for a long time and their rules and components have remained unchanged for a long time as well.

This Format explores the question “what if magic was like that”

Both players would have the same set of cards with which to construct a small 36 card deck.
Players start the game with two utopia lands (all basic land types) in play, and a hand of 5 cards.

There are two categories of cards, ‘base cards’ and ‘aces’
A player can include up to 6 copies of any base card, but only 1 copy of any ace card, and only up to six ace cards total.
There would be 12-15 different base cards to choose from and likely no more than 36 different aces.
(One of the Base cards would be additional utopia land.)

Conceptually, base cards provide the backbone for different archetypal strategies while aces are the hinge, tech, and key cards.

I have a list of bases and aces in the works and a specific format I used as inspiration.
I’d be more than happy to post my lists, however I’d love to hear from the community first.

If you created a list of bases and aces, what would they be?
What cards do you think are crucial for a deep and lasting magic experience if you were to never add new cards to the pool?
