Feb 26, 2021Max Rebo posted a message on Read this announcement at your own risk (it involves mtg)Its the "real" cards thing. If these were a special supplemental, if THOSE properties want a crossover with Magic, thats cool and they could be sold next to THOSE properties, when it's MTG adding those properties to their line of real playable cards, I just don't like it.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Seems a more money grab in all reality. They saw people making custom art, they decided hey we can SELL custom art. They saw people making custom sets, now they decided hey we SELL custom sets.
I just think its short sighted and will hurt long term.

Jan 28, 2021So it seems Tibalt just randomly showed up on Kaldheim one day looking to get into trouble. Heard stories of the sword, disguised himself, stole the sword, went about creating some Realms wide chaos and then just leaves. What a pranksterPosted in: Magic Storyline
Well he also managed to get himself infected with Phyrexian oil as well so I assume he needs to come back and talk with Vorinclex again to finish the deal they made, (that was unnecessary because thats what Tibalt was going to do anyway.) But he probably won't because showing back up in front of the Monstrous Praetor is probably a bad idea and Tibalt would know that. Hmm. Just a weird setup. Guess the oil is walking around the multiverse again.
Maybe if we find out how and when Vorinclex got there and who hired Kaya to track and kill him some things might get cleared up.
It's just the same old trope though in a way, Some random plane just doing its own thing minding its business until some Planeswakers show up and start messing around with everything. I just want a plane to stand on its own instead of just being the backdrop of some passing by Walker slap fest

That will suck for people coming to the store with these cards in their deck not being able to get in a game.
Then it sounds like the problem there would stem from your playgroup, no?
Sounds to me like the problem is Wizards making a mockery of the game and creating the false impression that this garbage will actually be accepted by everyone, no?
You better believe there will be a LOT of playgroups who will want to have nothing to do with ‘universe beyond’.

long story short it’s not based in Harry Potter or any other magic school theme in anything
This will be 100% unqiue outside anything even tolarian academy
(Fun fact are tolarian academy was born before Harry Potter)
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone, published in 1997
Urza's Saga (not sure if that was the first time Tolarian Academy was mentioned though) was released in 1998
Even if you take into account that the design took place one year before, at best, they were invented at the same time. But considering that Rowling came up with the story before it was officially published...Looks like Potter WAS before Tolarian
Edit: The first time the players heard of Tolarian was in 1998, so Potter precedes. But perhaps you're tacit to additional facts I missed?
Lat-nam predates tolaria as it came to be by several sets.
There was also a wizards school on ulgrotha prior to urzas saga too

This isn't personal toward you - but people have cried wolf so much about "racism" on the heels of America's first black president (that I voted for twice) so much that frankly, I'm worried it's the left that will compromise America's racial progress, and not the fears they've either resurrected or invented.Quote from OrzhovPlaneswalker »Quote from 5colors »Quote from Xeruh »Yeah, can’t relate to the people complaining. Kaya barely has shown up to get fleshed out. Here maybe she will have a chance where it isn’t really just her being used by other people hopefully. It honestly just reads like a no win situation as you can’t flesh out a character without giving them some spotlight, but you’re going to complain about them getting some spotlight to do what you say needs to happen.
Almost as if its not Kaya character people don't like about her.
^^^^ That is a reasonable suspicion.
I'd also like to point out how strategic and normatively sound it was of WotC to make Kaya the face of the 'vikings' set.
Both ancient Norse fandom generally, and Asatru as a religious and spiritual movement more specifically, have become more and more closely associated with white supremacist movements.
Kaya as Kaldeim's face planeswalker and lead protagonist is brilliant: Not only does her anti-undead power-suit and philosophy work well with ancient Norse beliefs and themes re: the afterlife (honourable death, Valhalla, separation between realms)-
-but also, as a well-written character who is also a Women of Colour, Kaya as Kaldeim's face planeswalker also signals greater commitment on WotC's part at combatting racial discrimination and tropes.
For the record, I'm not at all arguing that WotC's choice of Kaya as Kaldheim's face planeswalker was solely informed by her status as a Women of Colour. As mentioned by myself and many others, Kaya's particular interest in maintaining stability in a plane's afterlife process works well in a set that may have as a main plotpoint, the cosmological discontinuity of life and death. Maybe people are no longer being shepherded to their rightful afterlives by the Valkyrie and other divine servitors? Maybe someone who was supposed to die escaped their fate?
WotC would of course have to be careful at sufficiently differentiating such plot from Theros: Beyond Death but I am confident in thier ability to do so.
Kaya is disliked because she killed off a famous Legendary character, a guild leader, that was a facet of Ravnica's core identity. We can see Kaya on any plane, but there is only one Obzedat.
She and her power suite were used to break a fundamental Planeswalking rule. Jiang wasn't even a break in my opinion, but she certainly was.
She was a major player in the most loathed, most abhorrent, most compromising aspect of the lore ever - the War of the Spark novels. And the greatest criticism of the series was in fact undermining a very Left-leaning ideal of embracing the LGBT community and progress.
She is an assassin, and the apprehension that she has returned to kill off another major character on our very first visit and introduction to this plane is a valid concern. Especially when we're first introduced to these characters.
Literally none of this has to do with her race or gender, even for those that want to be about that, against all reason, reality and odds, because the media told them it must.

He was greatest, most brilliant artificer of the Thran, the genius of his time.
With Rebbec, he shut Yawgmoth and Phyrexia out of Dominaria for 9,000 years.
His soul dwells in the Mightstone and Weakstone that became Urza's eyes.
It's implied that Urza's Planeswalker's spark might actually be Glacian's.
And this is his card?

Oct 20, 2020TheOnlyOne652089 posted a message on Secret lair - New life 2020 (no unique cards here all reprints)The proper way would be to charge 30 bucks and make a OPTIONAL donation money X on the order (so as a customer you might just order the product without making a "forced" donation just to buy the product).Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Then WotC would donate from the 30 bucks as a true honest donation by the company.
As its right now, WotC donates basically nothing and forces the customer to make a 30$ donation on their behave.
Oct 6, 2020Posted in: Magic GeneralQuote from Rosy Dumplings »This is the part that I was very unhappy with... and it happens to be flat-out untrue.
On the blogatog entry answering several questions about the TWD promos, Maro SPECIFICALLY states that the new functional reprint version and the previous secret lair version would be mutually exclusive, that the oracle page on gatherer would specifically state that the two versions are the exact same card for the purpose of deck building restrictions. Mechanically, these cards work like Zilortha in that a new version without crossover art CAN be made but just hasn’t been announced yet.
That you have to visit Blogatog to get this important information is definitely a point of criticism as this point has not been properly communicated to the masses but this specific problem is still a non-issue.
That's only because they are backpedaling. IF their original intention was to do this the same way as the Godzilla cards, they would have used the same formatting as the Godzilla cards, with the "unofficial" name for the crossover art version on top and the "official" card name in the frame underneath. Doing it any other way WILL lead to confusion about how many copies of a card you can actually put in your deck. You shouldn't have to look on Gatherer to see that the Crossover version is the same card as the "canon" version of the card. In fact, that's why the Godzilla cards are formatted the way they are, to ensure everyone is on the same page that they are just promotional artwork versions, not an entirely different card. The fact they didn't do that this time suggests they didn't have plans for a "canon" version until the public told WotC to go Fork themselves. Which is the problem: some shareholder told them to do this, MaRo has enough integrity to know this was a bad idea, so he's now making promises I'm not sure he is actually able to make no matter how much clout he has as lead game designer. Hopefully he does, but the formatting of the cards does not bode well for this being the same situation as the Godzilla cards. And even if they do the retroactive "LOLZ it was promo art all along" lie, the fact they are formatted improperly (according to their own rules!) will cause confusion and be a legitimate cause for criticism by players going into the future.
