Feb 10, 2021secret lairs are scummy and I won't buy one.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Anyway onto just evaluation:
Faeries: The art for Glen Elendra Archmage and Vendilion Clique I think are the most charming of the 4.
Basics: The art reminds me of something my dad would have made at one point which is good. Its also scummy that its only 1 of each land AND tbh, this is technically worse value than Eldraine Wonderland because these lands lack the snow subtype.
Valentines: So first of all, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Goblin Rabblemaster, and the Goblin token are all horrifying to me more so than the tryhard metal attempts. Heliod, Sun-Crowned seems like it could be a meme especially if hes trying to stab Elspeth with that heart-shaped spear. The Monastery Swiftspear I feel indifferent about. The Boros Charm with the cherub comes across as actually more endearing than the Gisela one.
Kaldheim Showcase Pt 1: This is gonna be bought by legacy and modern players because of Primeval Titan.
Kaldheim Showcase Pt 2: This is gonna be bought more by commander players.

already preordered a box off amazon for $140.Quote from Decadent_Creed »Does anyone know how much Time Spiral Remastered boxes are going to sell for? Is there an MSRP or anything? There's a preorder listing on ebay for 250 which seems egregiously high
We know almost nothing about the set and it's set to release in a little over a month
Jan 14, 2021Other interesting thing is the last ability. If I am understanding it right, you can just keep activating it which gives her not only an additional +2/+2 in counters, but also another damage draw trigger.Posted in: The Rumor Mill

Jan 12, 2021Aftershock: The OG 4 mana destroy a land or artifact, but it also could destroy a creature. Punched you in the gut for 3 as thats hard removal, not damage based removal.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Demolish: At first wasn't so bad, but soon became the most generic and reviled of the bunch with its many reprints.
Sunder from Within: Looks similar to Demolish on the surface except it has Arcane, which meant other cards could at least splice onto it to bolster its effects.
Icefall: Looks similar to Demolish except it was actually reusable.
Violent Impact: The cycling variant of Demolish.
Then we come to...Smashing Success: Its technically better than Demolish. And it does reward you with mana, but it feels like the land destruction is the tacked on part as you can tell with how the card is designed they don't even want to reward the player with a singular treasure chest for doing so. Probably because of Goldspan Dragon but that thing already creates broken nonsense so its their own fault for printing that dumb dragon.

They have said that Noble will mostly be given to creature that don't have another "job". So far the only one that breaks this is Queen of Ice.
Jan 8, 2021Posted in: The Rumor Millparallel lives or anointed procession, then use that alongside stuff like crown of flames.
Step 1: Dragon and doubler are out.
Step 2: Cast crown of flames on the dragon.
Step 3: Dragon creates a treasure token.
Step 4: Doubler makes two treasure tokens instead.
Step 5: Crack both treasures and add RRRR to your pool.
Step 6: Spend R to buff the dragon by +1/+0.
Step 7: Spend R to return the the crown to your hand.
Step 8: Cast crown of flames again on the dragon by spending another R.
Step 9: Repeat steps 3-8
(each cycle accumulates +1 extra R and another +1/+0 on the dragon which has haste. Aka infinite mana with an infinite power dragon.)
With Crown of Flames alone you already get a infinite storm count.

As you cast a modal double-faced card with Kari Zev's Expertise, you choose which face (not: half) to cast, and "[o]nly the face that will be face up on the stack is evaluated to determine if it can be cast" (C.R. 711.7, 711.7a). For this reason, you can cast a face of a modal double-faced card with Kari Zev's Expertise only if that face's converted mana cost is 2 or less (as is the case for the Valki face, but not for the Tibalt face).
Note that Kari Zev's Expertise now says "You may cast a spell ... from your hand..." (C.R. 108.1); it no longer says "You may cast a card ... from your hand...".

Dec 29, 2020I don't understand the berserkers should just be warriors argument.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Both are already supported in MtG. Lovisa Coldeyes already looks like a Viking and shes from Coldsnap.
This is a Viking set, and by Viking standards the two are very different. A berserker had its own stigma and lore.
As caulkwrangler said, where else we would really get to expand the berserker class?
Frankly, I'd love to see more of a definition given out for what a berserker means in the scope of MtG.
I'd say the most common abilities given to berserkers in Magic are haste and ~this~ attacks each combat if able, both of which make sense to me. Usually they're power is greater than their toughness, which also makes sense as an allusion to their wanton disregard for defense.
Then there are some unusual berserkers:
Some outside-the-box-type berserkers:
Ogre Siegebreaker (isn't this usually an ability given to assassins?)
Ursine Champion (and this to shapeshifting druids?)
And then there's this: (WTF?)
Olivia's Dragoon (did they just try to force this connection through flavor text?)

This was my thought, they're here to take a look and grab some loot, hence "Raider". Considering we've seen god-imbued artifacts, dimension-hopping cyborg squirrels, and at least one culture centered on mastered artifice, this has to be a high priority target for conversion for them. As would Strixhaven if it is the height of sorcerous craft, and Inniatrad for, well, everything. A moon of metal infused with a horror greater than reality orbiting a world of monsters sounds exactly like the Phyrexian dream home.
The other thing I hope is that we are going to see the multiverse opened up by this because I am tired of isolationism. Let planeswalkers jump from A to Z with no inbetween process, but other creatures with the right know how can recite the alphabet of planes between A and Z to get there as well. It would be like being Superman versus owning an airplane - same method of travel, but drastically different in efficiency.

The biggest difference is that Ashiok puts those cards there itself. It's using it as Cold Storage. This Kaya can pull everything you've pointed your Path to Exiles at throughout the game. That's the worrying precedent.
I get what you are saying, but with Kaya its an emblem, and it happens with each of your upkeeps. As this feels like a template they could use by replacing one word with another. Lets say its not legendary spells, its instead, enchantments or artifacts or creatures or lands that it can let you recur. Its very similar to how many Future Sight variants there are like even its latest member Realmwalker.Quote from xaltair »
Ashiok allows you to cast the opp cards that are in exile, up to 3 of them in one turn. So the precedent is already there.

-snip of well reasoned era breakdown-
As I said before, I really do understand why people would make that assumption. My issue is less the assumption itself and more the idea of Snow being absent being treated like a personal attack.
(On a semi-related topic, this is why I really dislike marketing and the hype based drip-feed reveal model. If a group has even the slightest expectation it turns into something that might happen to something that will definitely happen and in turn leads to...a lot of unnecessary arguments.)
I think part of the inconsistency is for similar reasons to the issue of Tribal cards. Tribal X would certainly make sense in a lot of places on a lot of cards. Too many, in fact. Snow is in a similar boat. It can't be evergreen, but the mechanic wants to be, very very badly.
Dec 18, 2020Posted in: The Rumor MillQuote from Flamebuster »At this point Kaldheim was assumed to be the snow plane based on a novelty card in a novelty product with no further reference point prior to that.
Except when the plane was referenced again with Ramaz and was still snowy
